Departing from Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal and covering a distance of 26.9km, the route takes you to the Barajol Viaduct and the "Cézallier - Limon" itinerary, which takes 4 to 5 days to complete.

This hike takes you along the dead Rhue valley to the inaccessible gorges of the river, diverted by a break in the earth's crust at the end of the Ice Age. At the end of the Ice Age, the Rhue was abruptly diverted from its course by a break in the earth's crust. Both the hamlet of Sarran and the village of Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal were built in a dead valley, above several dozen meters of abundantly water-bearing sediments. This route follows this dead valley, before reaching the inaccessible Rhue Gorge. On the path up to Fournols, silence is the order of the day... and if you look at the scree on the opposite side of the valley, you may just catch a glimpse of the chamois, of which there are many in the Rhue valley. Departure point: parking lot beside the D679, at the junction for Montirin. From the parking lot, follow the road towards Sarran for 400m, then fork left onto the grassy path.

A hike to discover the typical Artense landscapes: woods, meadows, wetlands, isolated farms and dry-stone walls. In autumn, the bellowing of the stag invites itself onto the plateau... listen carefully! In autumn, the forests of Sumène Artense resound with the hoarse, powerful cry of the stag's bellow. When the mating season is in full swing, the hinds gather on the "braying grounds". The numerous suitors gathered around the females compete in impressive vocal jousts, sometimes ending in fights. Departure point: Hameau de Perol. From the center of the hamlet, take the wide track downhill. At the crow's feet, take the right-hand track. Alternative: From the hamlet of La Bonnetie, an unmarked alternative route leads to Mérigot, where a mysterious structure overlooks the hamlet and its pond. This is a vestige in the shape of a large table, probably dating from before the 10th century, but whose original function is still unknown.

A wonderful way to discover the Artense, a land of stone and water. A must-see is the peat bog of the same name at La Pignole. Start at Place de l'Eglise in Marchal, take the D622 towards La Crégut for 100 m, then fork right onto a path lined with low walls that joins the D422. 1. At a ruin, follow the low-walled path into a meadow, and climb up the meadow on the left to the road. 2. Junction with PR 1. Climb left to Coustal. Off the circuit, continue straight ahead to reach the Pignole peat bog (400 m). 3. At the entrance to Lavergne, level with the first houses, leave the road and turn left onto a grassy path lined with spruce trees.

A hike from the Rhue valley to the Artense plateau, via Lac de Laroche and ancient "charreires" lined with dry-stone walls typical of the region. The Artense granite plateau was shaped during the last ice age. Ice from neighboring volcanic massifs converged on the plateau to form a vast piedmont glacier. This glacier carved out depressions, deposited moraines and carried blocks of gneiss, granite and basalt. From the plateau, you can see all the surrounding area, as far as the Sancy massif. Departure point: Hameau d'Embort, route des Hurquets. The parking lot at the starting point is on the climb out of the hamlet. The circuit starts on the track opposite the small parking lot.

This circuit takes in a large section of the Piste Verte (4km), making it particularly suitable for VTC. Combining this route with the VTC 7 and VTC 8 offers a large loop of around 26km. Height difference: 110 m Paved sections open to traffic From Champagnac-les-mines train station, take the Piste Verte in the direction of Fanostre. At the first level crossing, turn sharp left onto the road leading up to the mine memorial. 1. Pass the stadium, then turn left towards Chamblève. 2. At the crossroads go straight on, after about 200 m, the route passes under the old mine silos (access strictly forbidden). 3. Take the Piste Verte back to the starting point.

Part of this itinerary follows an ancient Roman road and a path decorated in naive style by Artense schoolchildren as part of a school art project in the mid-1990s. On the long, difficult climb from Sarran to La Bonnetie, the route follows a paved path lined with low dry-stone walls. This is one of the many remnants of the Roman roads that once criss-crossed the Sumène Artense region, and the Auvergne in general. Departure point: Place de l'église, Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal. Take the road towards Fournols, to the left of the médiathèque municipale.

This trail, with its sometimes narrow path, takes you along the wooded banks of the Tarentaine River and in the footsteps of one of the many mill remains that once populated our region. Biodiversity trees have numerous cavities, making them ideal living quarters for many species. These cavities may have formed as a result of various events, such as drilling by birds. Over time, cavities can grow in size and become attractive to a wide range of cavity nesters: old and dead trees, a rich source of biodiversity! Starting point: D622 between Marchal and Lanobre, about 4 km from Marchal. The starting point is on the left-hand side of the road leading to the hamlet of Mazauriel. Follow the path.

Departing from Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal, this hike progresses through the woods to discover hidden, authentic hamlets. Dry-stone walls are the signature of the Artense landscape. Dry stone is a construction technique of popular and rural origin. It originated in the Neolithic period, when man first began to cultivate the land. These low walls show the extent of the work carried out by the "older generations", their sturdiness and the undeniable graphic quality of the result. Departure point: Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal swimming pool parking lot. Take the D679 towards Bort-les-Orgues, then fork left on the path leading down to the Moulin de Champalier.

The Rhue flows through gorges lined with steep forests. This Natura 2000 site is home to one of the few low-altitude populations of chamois. Superb and verdant, they boast a high level of biodiversity, with many protected plant species. The gorges are only accessible by car from Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal, in the direction of Saint-Amandin or Condat.

A 125-hectare lake perched at an altitude of 800 meters. It's a popular swimming and fishing spot. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag since 2015 and is supervised every year during the summer season. Since 1970, Lac de Lastioulles has also been one of the largest water reservoirs in the Dordogne basin. The lake supplies water to the Bort-les-Orgues reservoir and the Auzerette and Rhue hydroelectric plants. Every year during the summer season, the tourist office organizes events around the lake on the theme of biodiversity, called "Pavillon bleu" events. You can tour the lake by car, motorcycle or bike from the road, or admire the view from the lake's main dike or from the beach located on a peninsula.

Perched at an altitude of 800 metres, Lac de Lastioulles boasts a sandy beach ideal for summer water sports such as swimming, sailing and canoeing. Swimming is supervised in July and August. No garbage cans on the beach: please take your garbage with you. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area. Since 2015, the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag label for the quality of its environment and the activities on offer. The bathing area is supervised in July and August by a professional with training in accompanying people with disabilities. Disabled access to the beach and a tiralo (beach chair for the disabled) are also available. The beach has been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label.

Lac de la Crégut is the largest natural glacial lake in the Massif Central, covering almost 37 hectares. Kesako : Glaciers have great abrasive power, eating away at even the most supple rock to create overburden. The passage of the Artense glacier 13,500 years ago left a basin that was filled by runoff from several streams and the sub-lacustrine springs of La Crégut. Its depth (two pits of 16 m and 26 m) and the fact that its natural water supply is low in nutrients, have prevented it from becoming a peat bog. At 808m, it's the highest point in the commune of Lanobre. With its 360° view, it's a great place for stargazing. It overlooks the village that bears its name, 2 km to the east of the village. From here, a circular panorama with an orientation table and picnic area opens out onto the Monts du Cantal and Monts du Sancy. In the hamlet, head towards Le Fraysse to the orientation table, or follow circuit 11: Le Pied du Fraysse. Free access all year round. You're climbing a volcano! The Puy du Fraysse is one of Sumène Artense's volcanic relics.

Magnificent views over the village of Antignac and the Roc Vignonnet chapel, accessible by heading (from Antignac) towards the Moulin de Sauronnet or via the PR 15 hike: Le rocher d'Agayrou. Be careful, it's a climb!

Gothic-style church. Year of construction: 14th century. Listed as a historical monument in 1980. The building, constructed by monks from La Chaise-Dieu, is nestled within the village of Trémouille, a commune situated in the unspoiled natural setting of the Artense region, between rivers, lakes, and hills sculpted by glaciers. The bell tower, with its four openwork openings and wooden gallery, gives it a distinctive silhouette. One of its most remarkable features is the "Saint Martin's Wheel," or bell wheel, suspended in the chancel at a height of approximately 3.5 meters. It was traditionally turned during weddings and baptisms. This wheel has been listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments since 1975. The lever system allows the small bells mounted around the rim to ring, creating a rather rare and symbolic sound. Visit and access: Self-guided tours are possible; keys can be obtained from the Trémouille town hall (04 71 78 50 76).

This 23-hectare artificial lake is the result of the impoundment of a former peat bog, which explains its shallow depth of around 2 meters. A themed trail has been laid out for the tour, and along the way you'll find a wildlife observatory and picnic tables. There's also a variant of the Crégut tour that takes you to the Tact on foot.
