This hike takes you along the dead Rhue valley to the inaccessible gorges of the river, diverted by a break in the earth's crust at the end of the Ice Age.
At the end of the Ice Age, the Rhue was abruptly diverted from its course by a break in the earth's crust. Both the hamlet of Sarran and the village of Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal were built in a dead valley, above several dozen meters of abundantly water-bearing sediments. This route follows this dead valley, before reaching the inaccessible Rhue Gorge.
On the path up to Fournols, silence is the order of the day... and if you look at the scree on the opposite side of the valley, you may just catch a glimpse of the chamois, of which there are many in the Rhue valley.
Departure point: parking lot beside the D679, at the junction for Montirin.
From the parking lot, follow the road towards Sarran for 400m, then fork left onto the grassy path.
