The GR® de Pays Tour du Revermont offers seven days of hiking on the limestone hills of the Revermont, the foothills of the Jura Massif. It can be shortened thanks to a number of itineraries. The GR® de Pays Tour du Revermont allows you to discover the Revermont, or southern Jura mountains, a transition zone between the Bresse plain and the Bugey. This massif is made up of two mountain ranges, culminating at the Signal de Nivigne (758 m), which frames the Suran valley.

Built on the municipality of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, in the hamlet of Varey, do not hesitate to discover the Castle of Varey, which bases are medieval. The Château de Varey is located a short distance from the village of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. There has been a fortification on this site since the 12th century. The magnificent building which can be seen there today dates from the 19th century when the château was completely rebuilt.

For an enjoyable break, discover Mérignat, typical vineyard village between the hills covered of vineyards, gardens, orchards and wooded plateaus lined with steep rocks. All roads lead to Mérignat ! At departure from neighboring villages, take the marked out pathways. Do you see a tower far away ? Remains of a feudal castle erected in 1302 by Humbert de Chatard, it is an emblem that raise on the heights of the village : when you are at its foot, open wide your eyes, a magnificent panorama on the Cerdon “reculée” is waiting for you. And your eyes are going to be dazzle again : follow the signs in direction of the point of view. You are climbing through the hills that surrounds the Ain plains, or at the heart of green and flowered meadows, discover an original nature that Men has been able to preserve. Mérignat, it’s also and especially a typical village, by its wine-making reputation, with its vineyard stone houses, composed of a barn with a vault, stairs leading to the habitation, a cellar, and for some of them a pig “soue” under the stairs. Discover also its two conventional houses with their adjoining parks. Mérignat, it’s a preserved village, a human place. Take the time to stroll in the little streets of the village and to discover its church, of gothic style (15th) with its bell tower boasting 3 bells of which the littlest one is one of the oldest of the region (1547). Monument and cemetery set up as a memory of the maquis of Ain and Haut Jura Erected next to the main road, this memorial, carved by Charles Machet, is in memory of the 700 dead men in the Ain and Jura maquis during the 2nd world war.

Travel, as Jules Verne, at the centre of earth, through the time, at the Caves of Cerdon… Horse lover ? Go with your mount and roam one of the many hiking pathways that will permit you to move at top speed and for many hours. You could also practice western horse riding. Perched high up in the hills overlooking Ambérieu-en-Bugey the Château des Allymes has stood guard over the town since the 14th century. The château was built by the Dauphin of Vienne in 1310. It fell into the hands of the Duke of Savoy in 1335 and became part of France again in 1601. The Chateau des Allymes (Allymes Castle) has preserved intact many features of medieval military architecture that defended the territory during the Middle Ages. The Chateau des Allymes is made up of two sections. There is an upper courtyard which is formed by four curtain walls linking the keep (donjon) to the round or watch tower. Secondly there is the outer bailey with the remains of a large fortifying wall and a small watch tower. In 1960 the Château des Allymes was listed as a Historic Monument and was saved from total ruin. It has been open to the public since 1966. The château is managed by the Association des Amis du Château des Allymes (Friends of the Château des Allymes) and today it houses exhibitions, concerts and conferences. Since 1984 the château has officially been the property of the town of Ambérieu-en-Bugey. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the listing of the château, an exhibition room was opened in 2010. It is named in honour of René de Lucinge (1553-1624), Lord of Allymes, who was instrumental in the integration of Ain into France in 1601 with the Treaty of Lyon.

In a renovated 19th century Bugist farmhouse, in the heart of Valromey, the owners offer 4 rooms for a capacity of 12 people. Norwegian breakfast. "Utsikten" is a typical old farmhouse of the Haut Valromey, recently renovated, located southwards with a breathtaking view of the Chartreuse and Vercors mountains.
