LES CHEMINS DE LA LIBERTÉ (OPUS 1) : DU COL DE BALÈS À PORTET-DE-LUCHON

The paths of freedom are routes that were used by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: resistance fighters, Allied pilots, Jews and those refusing to participate in the STO (compulsory work service). By attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the Nazis who threatened their very existence. Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" invite you to discover the first part of this route, from the Col de Balès to Portet de Luchon. This hike is suitable for families with good walking shoes. The elevation gain is 547 m, but the route is mostly downhill with a total descent of over 1,000 m. By taking this route via the Col de Balès, you will be following in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the Françoise resistance network, one of the first to help and involved in the escape of at least 700 people. Like André Bon, who made it to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees. A dangerous and demanding human adventure, this gruelling journey cost the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or Nazi troops. You who walk in the footsteps of these shadow fighters, escapees, smugglers, networks of helpers, anonymous people who contributed to the rescues and many of whom never returned... Do not forget them. To find out more about the history of these fugitives and their smugglers, visit the website of the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" (Paths to Freedom through Comminges and the Val d'Aran). To walk in peace and discover the flora and fauna, a mountain guide can accompany you on your hike: www.pyrenees31.com/planifier/activites/randonnees/trouver-accompagnateur/

LE SITE DE SAINT-BERTRAND-DE-COMMINGES/VALCABRÈRE

LE SITE DE SAINT-BERTRAND-DE-COMMINGES/VALCABRÈRE

A major stopover on the roads to Compostela, the Grand Site Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère offers a remarkable archaeological and monumental heritage. A crossroads of gentle itinerancy, the site is an ideal place for cycling and walking. Ancient Roman city, Lugdunum Convenae was a prosperous city of several thousand inhabitants at the center of an important communication link. It had the attributes of an important Roman city: theater, temple, forum, thermal baths and a vast market. The subsoil of the site of Saint-Bertrand-de Comminges/Valcabrère reveals today its rich ancient heritage. The imposing cathedral of Sainte-Marie is the witness of the ancient bishopric of the Middle Ages. Its cloister open on the hills of the Pyrenean foothills is a place full of charm. The choir of stalls and the organ, both Renaissance, are the other must-sees of the visit. Another flagship monument of the site, the Romanesque basilica of Saint-Just-de-Valcabrère, isolated in the middle of the fields, is particularly unusual. Built on the site of a Roman necropolis, it is largely built with stones from the same necropolis. The cathedral and the basilica, as well as the early Christian basilica and the chapel of Saint Julien, located in the lower town, are listed by UNESCO as part of the Ways of Santiago de Compostela. Crossed by the GR861-Via Garona and the GR78-Voie du Piémont, the site is the starting point for many walks and hikes without forgetting the Garonne cycle path for cycling lovers. On the square in front of the cathedral, you will find at Les Olivétains-Haute Garonne Tourisme all the information for the visit of the site, the territory and the department. Guided tours for groups. Temporary exhibitions. Bookshop-Boutique. The archaeological museum, open in the summer, presents temporary exhibitions relating to the archaeological history of the site and the territory.

DOMAINE DE VALMIRANDE

DOMAINE DE VALMIRANDE

Park and gardens. A real arboretum with more than 180 species. Stables and tack rooms among the most beautiful in France. Concierge service at the entrance of the estate. Remarkable elements: statues, sculpture, factory, bridges, fountain, lake, cave. THE INTERIOR OF THE CASTLE CANNOT BE VISITED. Open from Tuesday 14/07 to Sunday 30/08. Wearing of the mask is compulsory. There will be no visit of the Chapel (too small to respect the social distance). The view that amazes. The Château de Valmirande, built by Baron Bertrand de Lassus, is an ex-nihilo creation of the end of the 19th century. In 1892, he acquired 10 plots of land in one piece, with a surface area of about 41 hectares, in order to build the castle, surrounded by a landscaped park. The design of the château was entrusted to Louis Garros, an architect from Bordeaux. For the park, Baron de Lassus called upon the Bülher brothers, creators of the park of the "tête d'Or" in Lyon, the Borély park in Marseille and the Talleyrand property in Valençay... In 1902, the castle was extended to the east by a chapel whose stained glass windows, marbles and the Sacred Heart of L. Barrias can be admired. In 1912, the landscape gardener René Édouard André inserted two French-style flowerbeds: one to the north of the castle, the other to the south from which one can discover the view of the Pyrenees mountain range so loved by Bertrand de Lassus. The castle, a private residence, cannot be visited. Real arboretum of more than 180 species.

CHAPELLE SAINT-PÉ LA MORAINE

CHAPELLE SAINT-PÉ LA MORAINE

Built in the 10th and 11th centuries. The main interest of the chapel Saint-Pé la Moraine is however not in its architecture, but in its exceptional decoration (sculptures, reuse ...). Saint-Pierre or Saint-Pé-de-la-Moraine Chapel This pretty chapel is located on a moraine - large mass of ice - of the Larboust glacier. Saint-Pé-de-la-Moraine, built in a mixture of limestone, granite, shale and recuperation of ancient materials. Although reworked at the end of the Middle Ages, it is representative of the style of the first Romanesque art in this mountain Comminges of the Middle Ages based on the richness of its Gallo-Roman heritage. A few cinerary trough lids, these funerary urns, integrated into the chapel, are characterized by slightly less conventional representations. On the buttress of the chevet, notably on the base slab, the sculptor has added attributes (pottery and a series of tools) to the usual simple busts embodying the deceased. It is certainly their professional activity that we wanted to evoke. But the building was implanted in the middle of an area whose traces of occupation go back well beyond this period.Excavations have revealed that the chapel is at the heart of a Neolithic burial site. Inside, the stone paving, probably contemporary to the construction of the chapel, depicts a fish, a Christian symbol from the origins of Christianity. Excavations have revealed that the chapel is at the heart of a Neolithic burial site. Inside, the stone paving, probably contemporary to the construction of the chapel, depicts a fish in one place, a Christian symbol dating back to the origins of Christianity. Also to be seen: the altarpiece, high in color, decorated with trompe-l'oeil paintings. The motifs correspond to the ornamental vocabulary of 17th century altarpieces. Classified as a Historical Monument, it is dated 1682 but its statues are probably earlier (Peter, the patron saint of the chapel, Saints Blaise and James).

TILIA

The 12-person gite offers dormitory accommodation (sleeps 8) as well as a large private family room (sleeps 4) and two bathrooms. During the warmer months, the Gîte Tilia welcomes hikers, cyclists, workers and travellers passing through. Each year we have continued to renovate and equip the 90m2 gîte so that we can offer quality tourist accommodation at a low price. Over four seasons, we've noticed that women and LGBT+ people don't always feel comfortable in mixed dormitories. In fact, as we only have one dormitory, we haven't always been able to promise a safe space when asked. That's why we'd like to tell you how our project has evolved, in line with our values and the needs we've identified. A more suitable and cosy space. With a view to reopening in 2025, we are going to reorganise the space so that we have a larger, more welcoming dormitory, as well as a private room that can accommodate a couple/family or a small group of friends. A safer space for women and LGBT+ people. We would like to make our space available for mixed periods for women and LGBT+ people, so that we can welcome them in a more inclusive, respectful and secure facility. To get a better idea of the demands and needs of this target audience, we have prepared a short questionnaire: https: //forms.gle/awbVgun4YxJz1xzi8 (feel free to share). An offer for associations and SSE companies. We would also like to adapt the spaces to accommodate groups and associations with social and solidarity economy values, to enable them to 'go green' under the right conditions.
