At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

In a setting with oak trees mainly predominating, the hiking trail leads up to the highest point of the Serre mountain, at an altitude of 549 metres, providing some truly exceptional views.

The path climbs in a zig zag up to La Roche ().   La Roche. Follow the path to Clément.   Clément. Leave the GPR and take a path on your left () past a wall. The path continues and then descends. Cross several streams and fairly dense woodland, then climb up to Flacouze (N.B. on your right as you climb, you’ll see a beautiful spring).  Flacouze. Take the road. After several bends, take the path on the left after the fire reservoir to Bisourne.   Bisourne. Follow the road to get back to your starting point.

In an old and beautiful stone farmhouse, three km from the village of Alba la Romaine, we offer three spacious and bright guest rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning, and hearty breakfasts. Access to the shared kitchen.

In an old Ardèche farmhouse that has been completely renovated, it is by climbing a few stone steps that you reach the gîte La Ruche. Like a swarm perched in its tree, this lodging, by its high position confers a great intimacy and a beautiful sight. This room is located on the second floor of the east wing of the building. It consists of a terrace on the same level as the kitchen and the dining and living area. Two attic rooms and the bathroom on the first floor. The space is convivial and very sunny, its elevated position of one level gives it a great intimacy.

Around thirty caves, some of which have two levels, have been carved into the cliffs at various heights. Access to this unique site is free. An explanatory sign (in French and English) is located at the entrance to the site, near the small parking area. Traces of the modifications made to these caves are still visible: beam and staircase anchors, niches, skylights, gutters, grooves, and benches. A path, still partially paved in places, served this village, founded around 1210. It had a chapel (Saint Catherine's Chapel, which is still maintained), located north of the castle and also partly carved into the rock. This medieval village had some fifty dwellings carved into the cliff of the crater of this extinct volcano; half of these dwellings are still visible and can be explored! The last inhabitants lived in the village around 1880—a hermit and a poor family, in a sheltered alcove on the southeast side of the cliff. The site has been inhabited for millennia; an oppidum (fortified settlement) existed across the valley, in Cheylard, in the 5th century.

The chapel, coil up on a neck, has been built during the XIXth century to fight against the phylloxera (vineyards illness). In the future: laying out of the interior of the chapel, extension for the crossroads and parking.

Located at la Roche Chérie, the neck is accessible by car in following the little hamlet. You can park you on the site. It is situed between 2 ledges of basaltic rocks. For the future: extension of the crossroads and parking.

It was the one of the oldest and most important fiefdoms of the Barons of Aps. Located at the foot of the Coiron, the village was fortified by the 14th century. You can imagine the form of the village by tracing the remnants of the defensive wall. The narrow streets give to the village its character. Northwards you can observe different volcanic formations of the Coiron. Its narrow roads divide the houses and a number of them are typical, or traditional habitats. The hamlet of the Roche Cherie found at the foot of the neck one can find the remains of a castle tower. A chapel has been constructed at the 19th century with basalt rocks. The interior columns of the church are believed to be a part of an older building. This chapel was in ruins due to the passage f time but thanks to a big restoration work.

Look no further than the summit of the Croix de Juliau, a unique experience in Ardèche! The climb to the Croix de Juliau is much more than a simple hike. The trail of the “Plein la vue” route (sheet 8 of our topoguide “Monts de Berg et Massif du Coiron”) immerses you in the preserved beauty of the Ardèche. Along the way, you will discover the local fauna and flora. Arriving at the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view that seems straight out of a dream. The Croix de Juliau no longer sits enthroned, but the 360° panorama will still be there: your gaze will go from Villeneuve de Berg to the Dent de Rez, passing through authentic villages like Mirabel, St Jean le Centenier, St Pons, Alba la Romaine, and Valvignères, but also by Mont Ventoux, Coiron and Vercors. Don't forget your camera to capture these wide open spaces! Some legends attribute the name of Mount Juliau to Julius Caesar (who passed through there), but other sources contradict this theory. However, the Roman presence has been attested since the discovery of a villa, and a temple dedicated to the soothsayer Julius Caesar and Augustus (or Diana depending on the sources).

Remarkable natural site - Basalt columnar. Of volcanic origin, the Coiron has the shape of an oak leaf, formed by basalt flows during volcanic eruptions that occurred. It stretches from the Escrinet pass to the Rhône Valley and dominates the limestone lands of the lower Vivarais. It stands out very clearly in the landscape by its black cliffs which we call Basaltic Organs. We will find them near our villages like St jean le Centenier, St Pons, Mirabel,… You just have to look at the landscape to find them. Here the basalt organs which form vertically when the lava cools are clearly visible. The slower the cooling, the more regular the prisms (organs) are.

Discover the remains of the Bastide Royale, in the heart of Villeneuve de Berg The Bastide Royale was created in 1284 by a deed of betrothal between Philippe III le Hardi, King of France, and the Abbot of Mazan. This established royal justice over the whole of the Bas Vivarais and built a new town with its ramparts, its corner towers, its war gate or gate of honour adorned with the coat of arms of the town, its royal house, now the town hall (under the courtroom you can visit the prisons). Ancient sundials can be seen in the streets of the village. The Bastide Royal was created in 1284 by an act of feudal association between King Philippe III le Hardi and the Abby of Mazon. This act installed the king's jurisdiction over all of Bas Vivarais or present southern Ardèche, and created a new city with its ramparts, angled towers, and fortified gates ready for war and adorned with the emblem or blazon of the city. The former house of the king is where the Mayor's offices are located today (below the Hall of Justice you can visit the former prisons).

Alba is bursting with 2000 years of history…What makes Alba so unique? La Roche's hamlet built around a basalt peak and the village established around the castle, also built on a volcanic peak. Located on the edge of the massif of Coiron, surrounded by vineyard, Alba-la-Romaine is proud of its rich historical past. This 2000 years old city has an impressive feudal castle, built on a volcanic dike, fenced by many houses that make it “character village”. Alba, former capital of the Helviens, a Gallic tribe, was, at the beginning of the 1st century AD., an active Gallo-Roman city before becoming the first bishopric’s headquarters of the Vivarais at the end of the 4th century. Today, we can discover the medieval village, clustered inside its 15th century ramparts. The entire village is clad in white (limestone) and black (basalt).The facades are chequered because of the basalt and limestone, local materials used to build stunning houses, given to Alba its particular atmosphere. The castle: at an undetermined period, the Bishops of Viviers have built a square dungeon on a basaltic dike around which the population formed the first castrum (fortified city). From the middle Ages until 1904, Alba bore the name of Aps, the family name of the lordship. During the French Revolution, the castle was ransacked and sold in 1793 as a national property. In 1880, a native started the castle’s restoration. Starting from 1914, several owners succeeded one another until 1975. The restoration began with the help of the Historic Monuments administration. Listed in the supplemental inventory of the Historic Monuments, the current castle, laid out on the foundations of the medieval castles, still has its substructure.

The Neck of Sceautres is the most important in Europe. There is a statue of the Virgen Mary at its peck. 130m above the village, the neck, plug of the old chimney of the volcano, allows us to discover the geology of the site. Between 6.6 and 7.7 million years ago, the relief was reversed following the birth of the Alps which generated the central massif. Lava flows filled the valleys and erosion caused basalt collapses. On the neck there was a castle which has completely disappeared today. The site is accessible to walkers, follow the signs.
