CAMPING DE LA BASE NAUTIQUE at Saint-rome-de-tarn

This « postman’s round » is unlike any other, matching the vastness of the saint-affrique causse. It goes across the plateau linking two sites steeped in history: the Tiergues dolmen and the old medieval seigneury of Auriac.From the carpark, walk round to the left of the waste reprocessing buildings and go through the tunnel which is under the road. Turn to the right and carry on along the D 250 road.From the dolmen, continue to the West towards Saint Victor until you reach the cross of Baldassé.Head towards the Casse and follow the small tarred road up to the farm. Take a dirt road to the left which is almost parallel to the high voltage power line. Follow this path that runs gently downhill and goes between the undergrowth up to a transformer. Keep going straight on and 500 m further on leave the path that rises to the right. Walk along the base of a field and join the old path linking Saint-Rome-de-Tarn to the Rosière, called "chemin du facteur" (the postman’s path). Carry on between two cultivated fields lined with trees. Leave the Cadenède path that you will see on coming from the left. Keep walking between the undergrowth by following a stony path until you reach the plateau.Start to walk downhill towards Saint-Rome de Tarn. Ford the Lévejac brook, and carry on until you reach road D993 which you cross.Take to the left fork towards the North-West, on the path that overlooks the road. Fork south to drop down towards Saint-Rome de Tarn. Get back on to the D993 which you take to the right. After the hairpin bend, climb the steps to the right leading to a path which rises up to Auriac.  From the highest point of Auriac which provides outstanding scenic views over the Tarn valley, take the "le circuit des pins" (pine circuit) that ascends among the shadbushes and junipers. Once you reach a track suitable for vehicles, follow it and join the TV relay trail.Continue straight ahead up to a small road. Take this road to the right for 100 m and leave it to your left by a recently opened path, then a trail and a tarred road. Ignore the paths that lead to the Axous and Puech Ricard. Instead keep walking until you reach the D 31 road.Take the path opposite that leads to the Caussanel farm. Join the trail which runs parallel to the Fourniou brook. Cross the brook and continue between some undergrowth. At the edge of the undergrowth, cross the rec, and after a hairpin bend, you reach a trail. Follow this trail to the right until you reach the front of the waste sorting centre.                                                                                                                                                              

The area displays a rich architectural heritage with several castles scattered all along this biking tour. You start from the Fontaine squareAnd then follow the D999 towards Saint-Affrique for 300 m. Now take the second road to your right (D3) and after 600m turn left onto a small road, then cycle along a trail which runs uphill, firstly among plots of land enclosed with low walls, then through woodland. At the bottom of the hill, you can enjoy the view of Laumière castleAnd then ride to your right uphill for 1 km and pass close to a well and a cross.Take the D3 to your right for 50 m, then get on to the trail which slopes up to the left. A beautiful view opens up and on the horizon is the Bouloc relay mast the top of which is over 1000 m above sea level. Bellow, you can see, the castle of the Mas Rougier hidden among oak treesThe route leads to the hamlet of TierguesWhere you can end your tour by taking one of the mountain biking circuits n° 1-2-3 or 4. Circuit n° 12 heads due north and runs under the road via the oviduct (tunnel that allows ewe flocks to cross a road safely), thus reaches the farm of the CaussanelBy a pleasant and shady track. Cycle up the road for approximately 500 m, and then take the trail to your right that follows the crest line up to the D31Cycle across the road cautiously and head towards the farm of des Axous. 1 km further on, take the turning to the right along a trail lined with high oaks and which turns into in a stony path. Cycle downhill along this tricky path which will lead you right below the castle of Saint-Rome de Cernon, and then to the village centre.

According to legend, the mound is referred to as “the tomb of the giant”. The Sargel mound which culminates at 761 m above sea level, offers  breathtaking views  over Lévézou, the causse of the western Larzac and the Merdelou peak.On the Southern part of the car park take the rue de la passade up to the end of the street, then turn left to walk across the D999 road and carry on along the Avenue de la Cavalerie where you cross the bridge up to the other end and turn left before the railway line on a road that leads to the stadium (signpost).600 m further on, Just before this bridge, leave the road and take a trail along the railway.After 500 m, pass under a second bridge to cross the railway which you overlook now alongside your way. Carry on northwards until you catch sight of a small house (formerly a crossing-keeper's house) located below left.From there, turn sharp right and take the path which ascends the ravine. Leave the path to the right and carry straight on. After 700 m, follow the hair pin bend and continue along an old path lined with dry stone walls which leads to the Cave Basse.This path takes you above the swimming pool and turn left between the buildings. Walk along the trail into a “boussière” (a narrow passage defined by two rows of box trees) and join the path coming from the Cave Haute. Take left and just after right. Now, follow the wide trail ascending towards the mound. The slope becomes steeper and follows a series of hair pin bends. After the 6th bend you arrive on the plateau, where you will see a ruined sheepfold on the right. Walk to the left of the fence, and after a wide bend you will reach the calvary where you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the surrounding plateaus: the Lévézou, Roquesquatre and the Merdélou.To return, retrace your way back to the Cave Basse (4). When you reach the swimming pool, take the left path which descends towards a dilapidated old barn: The Batisse.The path links up with a small tarmacked road. Follow this road up to the railway. Walk under the bridge that was left aside on the way there (2). Retrace your way back to the car park.

This pastoral breakaway which takes place on the upper part of Saint-Rome-de-Cernon is very easy to get to and offers to walkers a view over this village located at the crossroads of roads and hilly areas.Starting point and finish of the hike are located at the carpark, which is on the left side when watching the castle. Walk across a small square and right at the first street (rue du château) take left for approximately 40 m. When reaching the fountain, take to the right the D999 for 40 m. Before the petrol station, take right and walk along the church an ascending slope. Keep on going for 100 m       up to the D31, follow this road for 50 m, and then take a tarred track for 300 m. Right at the first tarred hairpin bend to the left, carry straight on the dirt track. The path first goes through a wooded section then leads to a plateau. Take right up to the D31 and walk across the road to the left. Turn immediately to the right on a tarred track towards Puech Ricard. Carry straight on for 800 m, leaving to your right the road that leads to the Cazals farm. 500 m further, look up at the lavogne (a paved pond to water the flock of sheep). Walk for 200 m and leave to your left a stone cross.    200 m further, fork to the right and take a stone path towards St-Rome-de-Cernon. Keep walking up to a steep path overlooking Saint-Rome and enjoy the panoramic view. Walk to the left side of the castle and the “old graveyard”, then follow to the left a cemented path and you're back to the carpark, the starting point of your hike.

Hiking trail accessible to all towards the site of Luzençon and its chapel of the 12th century. Enjoy A 360° breathtaking view!Go along the Cernon river on the leftside bank in direction of "Linas".At the first bridge cross the stream then turn left. Go along until the second bridge and cross over. The road leads to the beautiful hamlet of Linas.In the village, take the right path of the cross then leave it 100 m further to follow the one on the left that goes along a field. Reach a first crossway and follow up on the opposite path. At the second crossway keep straight ahead and join on the flat part, a larger track to follow on the left.Go through the hamlet of Crayssaguet until the sheepfold and go along to find a soil path. Once arriving opposite a field go back up the left path.Cross the road and get on the track that goes up on the opposite side until the entrance of Luzençon hamlet. Turn left, then immediatly on the right, the road that goes to the summit of the mound (wonderful panorama on the surronding causses and valley;viewpoint indicator).Come back down the typical small streets that leads to Saint-Georges de Luzençon. Outstanding fountain to see on the way.

This challenging circuit that runs along the ridges of the Saint-Affricain frontal causses and over the course of buissières and undergrowth, leads to the Roquefort shrine of the Combalou rock and to the splendid Tournemire amphitheatre.From the Painlevé square, take the D993 towards Rodez for 100 m, then pass under the porch to the left and keep walking on the stony path. Take the road on the right and in the sharp curve go straight ahead on the path to carry on by a wider track which goes back to the road.Take right the stony path which wraps around the Caylus rock. To the North-East of the rock, take the path which rises progressively and overlooks the D993 to the right.At the crossroads, fork to the right on the track towards the ridges. The slope is steep. Walk along      the cedar grove up to the ridge throughout pasturelands and groves of trees (enjoy the beautiful view over Caylus and St Affrique). Walk through the long bouissière that leads to the village of Tiergues.Walk across the village and before the exit, turn to the left to reach the graveyard. There, cross the old road and take the street between the sheepfold and the castle, walk around the castle surrounding walls and go through a tunnel under the road. At the tunnel exit, walk up to the left and cross the D3 road, take the path opposite that runs along the D993. Continue along this track.           Cross the road and carry on to the right for 100 m, then take the path on your left. Walk down to the Laumière castle and continue on the small road up to the D992. Carry on opposite in the artisanal zone to reach a ford. Once you have crossed the stream, fork to the right and walk along the Soulzon  up to the tarred bridge.In the first curve after the bridge, take the path on the left which runs uphill throughout the Conteyne woodland. Leave a path on the left, walk across the small road and carry on to reach the Roquefort Tourist Office. Walk around the Tourist Office, pass along the stadium and walk uphill on main street.  Nearby a small carpark to your left, take the ascending street to the right beside a big building (ancient hotel). Do not take the covered street but instead turn to the right and just after, walk up to the left on a track running along the cliff (when on the ledge, turn back and take a look at the two Baragnaudes pillars). Go straight on these alleys under the cliffs. At the Caves entrance, under a porch, take the Créance Street, climb the stairs and enjoy the remains of the St Pierre chapel (viewpoint indicator).At the view point indicator, walk across the grassy land and climb up a steep uphill path. Carry on throughout the undergrowth, then on open ground. Walk along the base of the cliffs of the Combalou with their typical great fracture.When arriving at the endpoint of the cliff and at the intersection of tracks, take the left path, cross the road and walk your way down to Tournemire (ancient railway city) on the Trumpet path. Below, walk around the water treatment plant, carry on the path along the left bank of the Soulzon. Walk across the Soulzon, then cross the railroad at the level crossing. Take left the rue de la Barrière, then the rue Française. At the car park of the former railway station, go up to the right and walk across Main street. You then reach the house of the Plesiosaur, a marine reptile which was discovered in the black soils of Tournemire.Keep walking on the road lined up with plane trees. Opposite the ancient convent, turn left towards the Brias amphitheatre via the chemin de la Fous. Before the bridge that goes across the Brias brook, take left the path that leads to the Tournemire Sensitive Natural Space. Arrival at . Arrival at the gite “la maison de la vigne".

This circuit that leads you in the frontal causses across small valleys and ridges, displays a whole rich heritage and offers a getaway through time and space, with some superb views over Saint-Affrique.From the Maréchal Foch square in Saint-Affrique, take the road towards Rodez (route de Tiergues). 100 m after the Painlevé square, pass under the porch to your left. Carry on the path and reach the junction with the road which you take to the right up to a sharp bend. Walk straight on a track until an intersection with a larger path. Take this rising path up to the road.Take right the stone track, then follow the path that ascends progressively and overhangs the road to Tiergues.When you reach the junction, take the track of the dale which runs parallel to the D50. Follow the ravine and the brook towards Tiergues.At the signposted intersection, take to the left a rising wooded path which leads to the plateau where the Tiergues dolmen is located.After your visit to the dolmen, walk to the right along the D250 and reach the hamlet of Tiergues. To get through the village, walk around the graveyard and walk past the church (notice the sundial on the façade of a house).As you get to the intersection with the cross, fork to the left and follow the trail that slopes gently down towards the D993. Take this road for 70 m and leave it to join a footpath on the right, then reach the tarred road which leads to Canissac and go further up to the left.Walk past the buildings up to the junction and head towards Soulsou. Walk around the farm to the South-East and take a wide trail which runs parallel to the ravine. Carry on in the middle of pine plantations until you reach an intersection.Leave the main trail and take right a path that goes across the undergrowth and follow it to the junction with a tarmac road that you take to the left. Leave consecutively two roads going to the left, then 100 m after a bend and a place called "Julhac", take right a track up to a junction with a tarmac road that reaches the town centre.

This getaway that goes to the Nougayrolles mount crosses along its way the dolmen tour and holds in the heart of a pastoral landscape some magnificent scenic views over the causse of Saint-Affrique.Upon leaving the car park on the rue Lamartine, turn right and carry straight on to the Maison de la Mémoire. Walk down to the left on rue Pierre Cadias, then stay on your right to reach the rue des Potiers (graveyard road)Take the road that leads to the graveyard (D 50). Then, a bit further than the new graveyard, leave the road to take a left a dirt road.Walk along a brook and join up with the route de Bages that you take to the right. Make a wide turn.Walk off the road by turning to the left and head your way to the north towards Roubiac. After the last house, keep going on an ascending dirt road throughout the woodland.Reach the intersection south of Nougayrolles, carry on northward and walk close to a lavogne in leaving the access to the equestrian gite on the right (make sure you close the gate behind you). Continue on a small road up to the intersection with the route de Bages in Crassous. Take the road to the right and carry on for 1 km 100.Reach the road that leads to Boussac. Opposite, a path lined up with box-trees will lead you to the Puech Ibilié dolmen in a 15 minute time going there and back. Retrace your steps back and take the road towards Crassous in a north-easterly direction. A bit before the quarry to the right is another well-preserved dolmen, the Crassous dolmen.At the exit of Crassous, take to the right the boussière that gently slopes down to the D50 road. Walk across the road and carry on the track opposite. Walk across the stream on a lovely small wooden bridge and join up with the valley path which you take to the right.Keep going in the same direction. Walk along a sheepfold. Leave to the right the path that joins the D50 (alternative route towards Nougayolles). Reach the intersection with the trail coming from the crests.Carry on walking the path overlooking the D993 that can be seen below to the left. Walk around Caylus rock on a stone path and reach the tarmac road.At the intersection, take the road to the left and walk in a narrow path. Then, join a tarred road that goes downhill towards Saint-Affrique and leads you to the town centre.This circuit has been designed and described by the hikers association Les Cardabelles

The Caylus rock which used to be the bedrock of a feudal castle and the Tiergues dolmen, an outstanding megalith are the two symbols of this excursion in the heart the Saint-Affrique countryside.1 Start from the Painlevé square and follow the D 993 for 100m, then take the left turn under the porch and follow the stone pathway. Carry on along the road on the right hand side, up to the start of the bend, then walk straight on along the path in front of you and then follow a larger track that takes you back onto the road.2 Take the right turn onto the stone pathway that runs around the base of Caylus rock. Take the path towards the NE which slopes gently upwards and overlooks the D 993 which is to your right.3 Take the left track that runs in the valley parallel to the D 50. The walk is a shady path alongside the ravine and the Nougayrolles brook.  Leave the farm trail to your right that ascends towards the crest and the path to your left which leads towards Crassous. After the sheepfold the path gets wider and reaches a junction.4 Take the path that slopes up through woodland and ends at a plateau, nearby the Tiergues dolmen. Walk on the right side of the D 250 alongside the road, and then carry on along a sheep path until you reach the village of Tiergues. Take the road to the right along the graveyard and then walk through the village.5 When you pass the last houses and reach the calvary cross, take the path opposite which is lined with low walls and hedges. Follow a long “bouissière” (a path lined with box trees) which ends at the crest of the hill where you can enjoy a nice view over Saint-Affrique and the Caylus rock. Carry on along the crest through pasture lands and groves, then go through a cedar plantation, and eventually walk down towards the Caylus rock passing a cliff to your right.3 From here, follow the route you took back to your starting point.

This pleasant stroll which runs along the banks of the Sorgues river and follows the course of an ancient railway allows to discover Saint-Affrique and the Episcopalian city of Vabres from a new perspective.From the Social Centre "Le Quai" (former station), head towards the bd de la Capelle and walk along the Super U supermarket, turn to the left to  leave the road and take the green lane. Walk behind the        retirement home. Carry on along the quays bellow the church, pass under a bridge and after having walked across the carpark, turn left on the rue du général de Castelnau. Follow this road for less than 200 m and go down left to amble on the green lane, alongside the river. Pass under a bridge and reach the roundabout. Turn right to walk across the bridge, then turn right once more just after the bridge (do not go up to up to the traffic lights), then turn to the left (between the apartment block and the Hospital), walk carefully across main road and take opposite a very small road that leads you to the green lane. Follow the green lane for 1.2 km, cross main road on the Pedestrian crossing and get back to the green lane opposite. As you reach a business park, pay attention to the green lane markers; at the roundabout carry straight on. Once you’ve passed the insemination centre of the General Confederation of Roquefort, turn to the left and walk between fields, then along houses. Follow main road on the right for 200 m, then turn to the left to pass between the community hall and the chemist's. You now reach the Camper-van service station, turn right to walk into the tree-lined alley up to the far end where you turn right twice to get back to main road.Retrace your steps back to St-Affrique.

This dolmen which can be seen from the road is one of the dolmens that is worth making a detour to visit. It is nicknamed l’Ercoule owing to an old legend that the demigod Hercules, known for his superhuman strength, must have built this burial chamber.

The flat capstone that weights over 3 tons is inclined, but this dolmen is in a good state of preservation and deserves to be restored.

Listed as a historical monument, the Tiergues dolmen is part of the 20 or so dolmens which have been recorded in the area, some of them being poorly-preserved. The excavations of these megaliths were carried out by Emile Cartailhac during the 20th century and today their artefacts are scattered throughout Midi- Pyrennées (Rodez, Toulouse…)

Typical of the romanic architecture, this castrale chapel was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It was then opened to all, for weddings or burrials. The chevet, facing the East is a symbol of the resurrection of Christ. The chapel is usually closed, but you may ask for the key at the city hall in Saint-Georges de Luzençon (tel 05 65 58 41 00). 

This dolmen is still surrounded by large stones that form a tumulus. The framework has remained complete with 3.5 metre high orthostats (sidestones) and a thick flat capstone weighing approximately 19 tons.It would have been erected some 4500 years ago.The clearing works were carried out during May 2015 with the assistance of the SARAC

The municipality of Saint-Rome de Cernon originates from the amalgamation of the former municipality of Montclarat with that of Saint-Rome de Cernon, a process which was carried out in 1840. Ever since prehistoric times, humans have inhabited the Saints-Rome area as evidenced by the Sargels caves and the dolmens situated in the bois de Laumière. Human settlement continued during the Roman and Medieval periods as evidenced by the many remains: the Saint-Rome, Mélac, Montclarat and Laumière castles. Today's village expanded in the late 18th century, during the construction of the road from Albi to the Cévennes, and during the construction of the railway in the 19th century. As a result, the village became a place where important fairs and markets were held and has hosted many prospering trading activities.

St Martin’s chapel dates back to the 10th century, and was the main church of the parish of Boussac. It is located on top of a mound which is 650 m high and was renovated in 1999 by a local association. Once a year, around August 15, an open air mass is celebrated, gathering between 200 to 300 parishioners and friends.

The Sargels mound, which peaks at 761 m, is residual and was historically part of the Larzac plateau before the surrounding rivers dug their ways through the landscape. It provides a breathtaking view over the Lévézou mounts (snow-capped in winter) to the East, the Larzac foothills to the West and the Merdelou to the South.

The castle is situated 3 km south east of Saint Rome and was rebuilt after the French revolution. Written references to the ancient castle mention the year 1322 when it was occupied by Raymond de Vanco de Banc d'Anglars, and again in the 15th century when it was owned by the Armagnac family. It was then passed on to the Morlhon family, the Vernhet de Grandval family and the Sambucy de Sorgue family. The Laumière seigneury was granted to the Vernhet’s during the 18th century who became Vernhet de Laumière. A general named Vernhet de Laumière distinguished himself on taking command of the Imperial Guard artillery during the Second Empire. He died in Mexico during the 1863 siege of Puebla. During the 19th century, Maria de Sambucy gave the castle as a wedding dowery to the Count of Toulza

This dolmen is situated 300 m North of Touloupy farm, up a hillside, atop a small plateau (private property). It is a fine specimen of a simple dolmen with no remaining headstone and an estimated tumulus that had a diameter of 4 m, now destroyed by farming. The current farmers and landowners have re-erected this dolmen.
