Take the Gaudentius trail and marvel at the exceptional views over the valleys. Pass along the old Lavaur road that linked Lautrec to Ambres. Go as far as the prône limestone site, which dates back to a very distant past. In 1270, Amaury, Viscount of Lautrec and Baron of Ambres, decided to found a fortified town. He chose an uncultivated area on the banks of the Dadou, which he named Saint-Gauzens in memory of Sanctus-Gaudentius, a young shepherd from 400 AD who was beheaded by the Visigoth king. The new bastide was so famous that Philippe le Bel, King of France, sent the seneschal of Carcassonne to found another bastide nearby to reassert his power. Just 5km north-east of St Gauzens, the church of Saint-Pierre de Monestiés boasts a superb Romanesque portal with 12th-century foliage capitals.

The trail starts in the centre of Briatexte and continues through undulating countryside offering lovely views of the Dadou valley and, in fine weather, the Pyrenees and Montagne Noire. The ‘place à couverts’ is typical of the bastides, new towns created in Occitania and Aquitaine in the 13th century to develop trade. A little further on, you'll see the listed gateway to the old castle, before reaching the dovecote mill on the Dadou, where the piers of the old railway viaduct still stand. On leaving the village, the chimney of an old brickworks catches the eye and bears witness to a local craft industry that has now been abandoned. Along the way, there are lovely views of the churches of Saint-Martin and Cabanès. The ‘Raccourci des vignes’, with its ‘open countryside’ route, will delight enthusiasts in search of tranquillity (starts at point 5 and finishes at point 7).

This route offers walkers the chance to explore the Dadou valley from the 280m-high, once-fortified village. Situated on a bank of poudingues in the molasse, the site is set in the middle of a vast natural cirque. The village was founded in 1246 by Dame Fines Alaman on the site of the Castel de Puech Buégo, which means hill (puech) of Bégon. The village's strategic location, which enabled it to keep watch over the main routes, and its economic development attracted the envy of many lords. Three points of interest mark out the route: the chapel of St-Martin de Grizac, now desecrated (point 4), the hill of St-Sigismond overlooking Briatexte and the Dadou valley with its magnificent viewpoint (point 5). Finally, the 16th-century chapel of Ste-Cécile de Mouribal, near the village of Busque (point 7).

A fast, peachy loop, a stone's throw from the city, for a cardio workout after work or an introductory ride. Even if my gradients can make you smile for an experienced mountain biker, taken at his own pace, they can hurt a lot... This loop is a more accessible variant of the circuit: "le grand tour par les collines". The start is the same and the two circuits split shortly before the "métairie haute" where this track leads directly to Canguilan without having to loop around in Briatexte. We therefore enjoy the small valley of the stream of Assou at a lower cost, always following the markings. We finish calmly, after joining the D84, by descending the ridges overlooking the Notre-Dame stream. Under the Canguilan antenna, the route this time proposes to remain always to the west of the D84. The return to Graulhet is downhill.

Starting from Graulhet, this signposted circuit will take you to the heights of Graulhet. With sublime views over the surrounding countryside, the Black Mountain and the Cocagne plain. With the added bonus of the coolness of the Nabeillou and Miquelou lakes.

The Toulouse-Lautrec museum is located in one of the most beautiful corners of Albi: the Berbie Palace. The Palace is one of the Episcopal City’s major sites with World Heritage status. The museum is recognised internationally for the works of this artist from Albi. TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, A UNIQUE COLLECTION IN THE WORLD The world’s most important public collection of the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including 31 posters by the lithograph painter, is to be found in Albi. There are also no fewer than 219 paintings, 563 drawings and 183 lithographs displayed in the museum. Early works, major portraits, paintings of brothels, prints from the world of entertainment, advertisements and later works are presented there, giving this museum an exceptional collection. Each stage of the production is represented, highlighting his gift for observation, his talent as a draughtsman and his quality for capturing significant detail. The route around the museum is enriched with information panels. To visit the museum is to meet the man, this native of Albi, of whom this city is so proud. A trip on the River Tarn aboard a traditional flat-bottomed boat. Various departures from the banks of the Tarn between 11:00am and 6:00pm. ‘L’Hirondelle’ and ‘Les Copains d’abord’, scows with a traditional flat bottom, cruise along the Tarn and offer passengers unexpected panoramas of Albi’s heritage and a tranquil atmosphere on the Tarn. The Archéosite archeological museum will take you back in time to rediscover an era when the village of Montans was famous throughout the Roman Empire for the production of Samian pottery. These high quality red ceramics were produced on an almost industrial scale here. The museum also offers beginners’ workshops in pottery and mosaic work, archeological conferences and even an Antiquity Week in April, featuring historical re-enactments.

The Museum Of The Art Of Chocolate is an exhibition space, cultural area and theatre dedicated to chocolate – and there’s even a boutique that we call a ‘chocolatheque’! UNESCO World Heritage listed (in the context of the Santiago Pilgrim Ways). The first church built in the region in the south Gothic style; it retains a magnificent portal decorated with eight Romanesque capitals and remarkable wall paintings carried out between the 13th and 16th centuries. Back in the 16th century, when the French Religious Wars were in full effect, the church of Notre-Dame du Bourg at Rabastens was looted by the Protestants, who then turned the building into a military barracks. When the Catholics finally reclaimed their church, they covered it in lime to ‘purify’ it. It was only when some restoration work was being done in the 19th century that paintings – hidden by the lime for centuries – were rediscovered, preserved in fabulous condition. The interior of Notre-Dame du Bourg is seriously flamboyant with red as the dominant colour, accented with blue and gold. Any visitor will be stunned by the beauty of the decoration.

Located in the heart of the "Pays de Cocagne", Puylaurens is a wonderful look-out spot, overlooking the plain of Lauragais, the Montagne Noire and - when the weather allows it - the Pyrenees. This old protestant town is also the birthplace of the song-writer who first called the French Republic by the name of Marianne. The fortified town of Puylaurens became in the 16th century a high spot of the Pays de Cocagne -or land of prosperity- thanks to the cultivation of pastel, the plant from which was extracted the blue pigments used to dye textiles. The plant was sold all around Europe under the form of dried balls called "cocanhas" in occitan, which explains the name "Pays de Cocagne". The trade of pastel incidentally enabled the circulation of ideas and this is how Protestantism traveled from Northern Europe to Occitanie when the kingdom of France had always been catholic. In the year 1660, the Protestant Academy located in the city of Montauban was transferred, by order of the king, to Puylaurens. It remained there during 25 years and was shut down as the Edict of Nantes, that granted religious tolerance, was annulled. In 1792, during the French Revolution, an inhabitant of Puylaurens, the cobbler and minstrel named Guillaume Lavabre wrote a song called "La Garisou de Marianno" (the Healing of Marianne), a popular satyr in which he gave the name Marianne to the French Republic. The text of this song is the oldest written token of the attribution of that name to the Republic, the town of Puylaurens can thus be considered as the birthplace of Marianne, allegory of the French Republic.
