Exploring Feugarolles, Lot-et-Garonne, Aquitaine

The Eurovélo3, the Pilgrims' Cycle Route, retraces the famous route of Santiago de Compostela from Norway to Spain. A journey of more than 5000 km through seven countries. The French part is called La Scandibérique. It is currently the longest cycle route in France. It passes through Paris and the Ile-de-France, the Loire Valley, Bordeaux and the Lot-et-Garonne on the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo. At Feugarolles, you will leave the greenway to head towards the Landes forest along the small bucolic roads of Albret. From the bastide town of Vianne to the charming village of Sos, via Mézin, the gateway to the Armagnac region, and Poudenas with its Tuscan-style castle, there is no doubt that you will find everywhere in the Lot-et-Garonne region an excuse to try the flavours of Armagnac, Buzet wines or foie gras.

From the threshold of the Garonne valley, go deep into the hillsides, sometimes steep, with an important built heritage. Discover the vineyards and orchards that make the department the largest garden in France.

A medieval bastide on the Baïse River, Vianne is an important stop for pleasure boats. To see the city walls, go to the quays of the port where people used to sail in flat-bottomed boats called gabarres, used to export local products. The mill you will see on the waterfront used to make flour that was sent to Santo Domingo. These exports have now given way to river tourism. At the foot of the mill you will see a large lock that has replaced the old "payssière", a passage used under Henry IV to let boats through. This tour will also take you to the stronghold of Montgaillard which had a strategic position during the 100 years war. You can see the remains of the 13th century castle as well as the ramparts, the fortified gate and the 13th century church.

The route is laid out in a cereal and market gardening plain between the Baïse and the Garonne, and is surrounded by the wine-growing hills of Feugarolles to the south, Buzet to the west and the wooded hills above Aiguillon and on the Pech de Berre.

Starting at the plain of the Garonne, this circuit climbs up the rocky escarpements which overlook the river. You will enjoy an uninterrupted view of the Gascogne hills to the Pays de Serres hillsides, or the tree-covered slopes of the Landes forest which overlooks the Lot Valley.

This loop connects the circuits of Vianne, Lavardac, Barbaste and Buzet-sur-Baïse. The vineyards are very present in the north and south. The center is rather wooded.

This small loop allows you to discover the multiple facets of the landscapes of the Albret hillsides, woods, cereals and vineyards. This circuit is adjacent to that of Vianne / Montgaillard. It can thus be added to the latter for a journey of nearly 9 km.

When mountain biking rhymes with ecomobility. The clay and stone paths of the Pays de Serres are waiting for you. From the Port-Sainte-Marie TER station, set off to discover the VTT-FFC "Entre Lot et Garonne" site, in the heart of the Confluent and Coteaux de Prayssas communities. Hillsides and plateaus alternate, offering a variety of terrain, remarkable panoramas and a touch of technicality. Keep an eye on your GPS. An unmarked connecting route, alternating paths and minor roads, will take you to the base's circuit n°2. From kilometer 10, follow the signs for circuit n°2. At kilometer 37, leave the signs and head for Clermont-Dessous. Enjoy the panoramic view over the Garonne valley. On very dry ground, the route is also suitable for gravel.

Here, the Canal Latéral runs alongside the Baïse. It crosses the river on a three-arched bridge-canal. A double lock allows the boats which circulate there to go down towards it and to gain the Port of Buzet.

Port-Sainte-Marie is a small, long town between the river and the foot of a steep hillside. It has old half-timbered and corbelled houses around the church of Notre-Dame, which dates from the 16th century, and the 700-year-old church of the Templars. Lady Garonne is, as the seasons go by, sometimes clear and nonchalant, sometimes muddy and worrying. Thanks to the richness of its alluvial deposits, vegetables and fruits grow generously. The gradual rise above the steeples and roofs of the town opens up the landscape to the Garonne plain where the crops are spread out in a checkerboard pattern. Port-Sainte-Marie is at the crossroads of 3 Roman roads: Ténarèze, Clermontagne and Toulousaine. Formerly a place of pilgrimage for the Gabariers de la Garonne, today it is the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela who pass through these places.

The church of Saint-Christophe was built in the 12th century according to tradition by the Templars, at a time before the foundation of the bastide. The only existing monument of the old village Villelongue, the church symbolizes the link between Villelongue and the Bastide of Vianne The church was once annexed to a priory, destroyed during the French Revolution, whose buildings were located between the church and the ramparts of the bastide. It belonged to the Benedictine monks of Cluny until 1395, then to the monks of La Sauve. The church, in the purest Romanesque style, with its decoration of capitals inspired by the priory of Moirax, was enlarged in the 14th century by the addition of a bay and a Gothic portal to the west and a chapel to the north. The murals were painted in 1856 by Tarlas. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1889, the church was then restored in 1910.

The village hall Espace Jourdain de l'Isle, with a capacity of 345 standing and 249 seated places, is available to all associations and individuals in Vianne and also outside the commune.

The village has developed around the ford which has enabled the Garonne to be crossed since time immemorial. Traces of the existence of a toll castle can be found in the 13th century, of which only the reputation and a few writings remain today. This ford was part of the Ténarèze, the road that linked Bordeaux to the Pyrénées Orientales.
