Explore the charms of Saint-salvy-de-la-balme, Tarn

Time: 2 hours - Distance: 6,9 km Unusual shaped rocks and typical architecture built of local granite will be on show in the Durencuse Valley. Departure at the Place du monument aux morts (War memorial square), next to the town hall. This hike will enable you to go across this sculpted and mysterious landscape so typical of the Sidobre, among beautiful beech groves, chestnut groves and coniferous forests. You will discover the traditional granite habitat from the start of this walk as well as by crossing the hamlet of Taillades where stones were driven directly into the ground to stand vertically, before going down along the small river of the Durencuse. Finally, you will go up back to the village of St Salvy passing by some famous Sidobre rocks such as the Grotte du loup or the Chaos de la Balme. A chaos in the Sidobre, is a river of granite balls formed by erosion, which tumbled down the slope and got stuck in the bed of the stream.

Several granite giants are just waiting there for you to discover them in the maze of the invisibles. Time: 25 min to 1,5 hour - Distance: 1 to 3 km Along the most famous path of the Sidobre you will see, among others, the Goose rock (le Roc de l'Oie) and the Devil's armchair (le fauteuil du Diable). Surrounded by the Crémaussel's undergrowth, you will walk, search, climb, imagine... from one viewfinder to another, in search of secret passages and other remarkable rocks in this labyrinth of the "invisibles". Walking time: 1.5 hr for the complete circuit (return trip to the three cheeses and large loop passing by the wall of death). 45 min for the large loop only. 20 min for the shorter loop (follow the signs back to the car park before the devil's armchair).

Why don't you walk in the footsteps of the granite workers? Time 10 to 20 minutes - Distance 0.5 to 1km From the Peyro Clabado, via the quarrymen's cross, to the old workplaces, walk in the footsteps of the former stonemasons and discover the remains of their traces before the industrialization of granite quarries. After this short walk, be sure to visit of the Espace Jean Cros next to the Sphinx to learn more about these Peiraires!

Walk along one of the longest boulder rivers of the Sidobre (60% of your hike) near the village Lafontasse. In the chaos lower down hides Saint Dominic's Cave. Adventurers could enter the cave through a narrow opening, difficult to find. Time: 20 min to 1.5 hour - Distance: 500 m to 3.5 km From the parking area, pass by the Egg Rock and walk along the chaos (river of rocks). At the end of it, take the small road to get back to the parking area. On this road you may discover some granite quarry blocks, which, as wild animals, remain hidden in the undergrowth. You will also see some typical Sidobre meadows bordered by planted stones who follow, but do not resemble, one another. It’s not recommended to enter the cave for children under 8 years old and during bad weather. Be sure you wear good walking shoes. (20 min) On the road, before or after this walk, you should not miss the incredible Baptistou Rock.(out and back 20 min)

This most famous waterfall in the Sidobre massif has to be deserved after a short but steep trail through the undergrowth. An exceptional geological site of granite and schist

A giant carrousel game of the Goose to start with, a nice rise among the rocks and a magnificent viewpoint at the latest. Time 30 min to 1 hours 50 min - Distance 3km Have a game of the Goose and set off on a discovery of the Peyremourou Rock. It was a “trembling rock” before, overturned at the beginning of the 20th century. It was nevertheless classified in 1921 because it still is unique in the Sidobre. On the way stop at the old shepherd's hut. Possibility to go for a shorter walk (2km in 30 min)

Duration 1h30 -Distance 3.5 km After or before a game of goose-buying, take this fun trail through the valley of the Ferralde stream and discover the small built heritage of Baffignac. GPS parking : 43.6618, 2.4485 Before the old town hall, take the road up towards Armengaud for about 1 km, then turn left at the sign for "Le Four". At the first house, follow the path between two hedges to the right. You pass the Cabane farm before reaching the tarmac. First follow the road to the right downhill for about 200 metres, then take a small, fairly steep path to the left towards the stream. Cross a small bridge before heading back up towards La Grange. Cross the road and follow a forest track. You cross a small stream before descending to Baffignac, where there is a small Protestant mountain church. A gigantic river of rock on the trail of legends below the village of Saint-Salvy-de-la-Balme. Alongside it you'll find "Le chapeau de Napoléon", "la grotte du Loup" and a host of other unusual rocks. There are several possible variants of this trail, one lasting 40 minutes and another lasting 1 hour 30 minutes (from the village centre).

Around the lake, you'll discover the trail of the immortals. It reveals the origins of the landscapes of the Sidobre massif and the secrets of granite formation. There are also 16 reproductions of menhir statues from the Haut-Languedoc. Approx. 20 min. Right next door, the Maison du Sidobre, also a tourist office, is waiting to show you how granite has been worked from the past to the present day.

This museum, situated in a former XIth fort is about the major global conflicts of the XXth century. You will discover a multitude of ceremonial objects, costumes, books. Le Militarial is the place of remembrance of war veterans of last century.  As a reminder, many resisters were in the Tarn maquis during the second world war. Preserving the heritage and allowing an educational access are the two main goals of Militarial. A large part of the museum is dedicated to military costumes carefully preserved. The museum has over 5 000 items in its collection, including helmets, lanterns, various weapons… The museum library contains over 10 000 books about the conflicts of the twenthieth century.
