CABANE DES EVADÉS

Welcome to our house nestling on the Col de Portet d'Aspet, just 1? hours from Toulouse and 1 hour from Spain. More than just a holiday rental, we invite you to take a break with your family or friends in the heart of the mountains, in a house filled with memories, nature and the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. A PLACE OF MEMORY IN THE HEART OF THE PYRENEES Built in 1866, our old barns have stood the test of time and still bear the marks of a unique history. During the Second World War, they served as a refuge and are now known as the ‘Cabane des Évadés’. Several monuments and historical markers in the surrounding area serve as a reminder of this emotionally charged past, offering the chance to discover a place where history and the mountains meet. A NATURAL SETTING FOR FAMILY GATHERINGS At an altitude of 1,100 metres, in the heart of the Central Pyrenees, the house enjoys a unspoilt, sun-drenched setting. From the terrace and the windows alike, the view stretches from Mont Valier to the Pic du Cagire. As soon as you step outside, nature lovers can set off to explore the trails leading to Le Puech, the Col des Passagers, the Pic de Paloumère, the Crête de Cornudère, the Cabane du Piejau or even the Pic de la Calabasse. Access to the property is via a 200-metre private road suitable for vehicles, the start of which joins the famous GR78, part of the Way of St James. Arriving here immediately gives you the feeling of leaving everyday life behind and entering a different, simpler and more peaceful rhythm. A FAMILY HOME COMBINING AUTHENTICITY AND COMFORT The 110 m² house comprises two barns that have been harmoniously joined together. On one side, a former sheepfold dating from 1866, with its stone walls preserved in their original state; on the other, a section rebuilt in the 2000s, designed as a cosy chalet where the wood, light and spaciousness immediately invite you to relax. In the older wing, the family kitchen centres around a large fireplace that makes you want to linger over meals and enjoy long evenings. Fully equipped, everything is provided to make cooking easy after a day in the mountains. Basic condiments, such as oil, vinegar and spices, are also provided to make families’ stays easier. Please note: the upper floor of this wing will remain closed during your stay. Adjacent to this, the contemporary wing features a spacious, light-filled living area spread over two split levels. The large dining table naturally becomes the hub for lively meals, board games and time spent together. The lounge, with its two sofas (one of which is a sofa-bed), smart TV and central designer stove, offers a cosy, relaxing atmosphere after a day spent exploring the Pyrenees. Upstairs, two mezzanines – which can be screened off – each feature a 140-cm bed and storage space. Young parents will also find a cot on site, along with all the essentials needed to travel light and make the most of their family holiday. The bathroom features a shower, a washbasin, a washing machine and a separate toilet. OUTDOOR SPACES DESIGNED TO ENJOY THE PYRENEES Outside, the south-facing panoramic terrace quickly becomes the heart of the home on sunny days. Partially shaded, it’s the perfect spot for a sunny lunch or a dinner with views of the mountains. Two garden tables, a relaxation area and a barbecue are available to help you make the most of the long summer days. Come evening, the magic of the place often works its spell in silence: if you keep quiet, it’s not uncommon to spot deer grazing in the neighbouring meadow, much to the delight of children and parents alike. To make the most of these convivial moments, we also provide a Molkky set, pétanque balls, board games, books and IGN maps to help you plan your next family walks. AMENITIES FOR A STRESS-FREE STAY To ensure you can settle in as soon as you arrive, the beds are carefully made up and bed linen, sheets and towels are provided. The house also has fibre-optic broadband with high-speed Wi-Fi, ideal for occasional remote working, film nights or the whole family’s digital needs. DEER RUT During the stag rutting season (from mid-September to mid-October), we offer a homestay option so that you can come and enjoy this magical and intense time of year, when we’ll share with you our passion for observing deer. Above all, we wish to share this little corner of paradise with those who love the mountains, nature and heritage – people who appreciate the history of the place and are happy to enjoy a simple, authentic and rejuvenating stay together. Nearby, on the Ariège side, you can explore the charming village of Portet d’Aspet, the Couserans region, Saint-Lary, the Bellongue Valley, Castillon, Lake Bethmale, Saint-Girons and Saint-Dizier. On the Haute-Garonne side, the landscapes of the Comminges region will lead you to the Col de Menté, the Pic du Cagire, the Spanish border, the Col des Ares, Aspet, Saint-Gaudens and Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.
