In Haute-Garonne, coming from Lannemezan, you enter via Saint-Bertrand de Comminges and then Saint-Gaudens. Then continue from Roquefort-sur-Garonne towards the Salat valley to reach the Ariège (Saint-Girons). A pleasant route, often on dedicated cycle paths, with spectacular scenery.

Hike around the episcopal city of Saint-Bertrand de Comminges. A stone's throw away is the Lespugues chasm, a geological curiosity. This hike in the Piedmont region includes a fairly steep climb up to the Mail du Hard, but it does not present any particular difficulty for hikers accustomed to this type of trail. Before setting off, please note that you will have a steep climb of about 20 minutes.

The antique city of Lugdunum is more than 2000 years old... the Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges site is something to discover by seeing the various monuments coming from various historical periods. Created in the 1st century BC, the capital of Aquitaine Lugdunum Convenae occupied an area of 36 ha for a population estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 inhabitants. The oldest remains found on the site date back to the Emperor Augustus (27 BC; 14). Only a part of the ancient heritage is visible today, such as the thermal baths, the market or the theater. Departmental archaeological museum. A conservation establishment linked to the site of Lugdunum, the ancient capital of the city of the Convents, the Departmental Archaeological Museum of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges was created in 1985. In parallel with its study and conservation missions, the team of the Departmental Archaeological Museum welcomes researchers, professionals and amateurs alike, and continues its temporary exhibition program.

A major stopover on the roads to Compostela, the Grand Site Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère offers a remarkable archaeological and monumental heritage. A crossroads of gentle itinerancy, the site is an ideal place for cycling and walking. Ancient Roman city, Lugdunum Convenae was a prosperous city of several thousand inhabitants at the center of an important communication link. It had the attributes of an important Roman city: theater, temple, forum, thermal baths and a vast market. The subsoil of the site of Saint-Bertrand-de Comminges/Valcabrère reveals today its rich ancient heritage. The imposing cathedral of Sainte-Marie is the witness of the ancient bishopric of the Middle Ages. Its cloister open on the hills of the Pyrenean foothills is a place full of charm. The choir of stalls and the organ, both Renaissance, are the other must-sees of the visit. Another flagship monument of the site, the Romanesque basilica of Saint-Just-de-Valcabrère, isolated in the middle of the fields, is particularly unusual. Built on the site of a Roman necropolis, it is largely built with stones from the same necropolis. The cathedral and the basilica, as well as the early Christian basilica and the chapel of Saint Julien, located in the lower town, are listed by UNESCO as part of the Ways of Santiago de Compostela. Crossed by the GR861-Via Garona and the GR78-Voie du Piémont, the site is the starting point for many walks and hikes without forgetting the Garonne cycle path for cycling lovers. On the square in front of the cathedral, you will find at Les Olivétains-Haute Garonne Tourisme all the information for the visit of the site, the territory and the department. The archaeological museum, open in the summer, presents temporary exhibitions relating to the archaeological history of the site and the territory.

The development of Lourdes is connected to pilgrims’ trains. On March 9, 1866 the station was inaugurated and the first steam engine reached Lourdes on March 27. In 1887, the definitive station was finished with its metallic structure and its 92 meters long platforms. For the fiftieth anniversary of the Apparitions, up to 300 000 pilgrims came to Lourdes by train, the beginnings of the arrival of countless crowds on the 20th century.

In the hospice, Bernadette Soubirous attended religious instruction classes before the Apparitions. On June 3, 1858 she did there her first holy communion. After the Apparitions, she was admitted as a boarder to protect her against visitors’ harassment and to get an education. Finally, she left definitely Lourdes on July 4, 1866 to join Saint-Gildard convent in Nevers.

The baptismal basin, made of marble from Lourdes, is dated from the Roman ages. Bernadette Soubirous was baptised on 9 January 1844 over these basins which were originally in the former Saint-Pierre church.

The construction of the Sacré-Cœur parish church started in 1875 on the request of Abbot Peyramale. It was inaugurated in 1903 and the bell tower was finished in 1936. Abbot Peyramale’s grave can be seen in the crypt.

On March 25, 1858 Bernadette transmitted here in Occitan to Abbot Peyramale the words of the Apparition: « I am the Immaculate Conception ». In 1973, the descendants of Lacour, owners of the building since 1922, transferred it to the city of Lourdes which established there the community library until 2007. The building keeps untouched one part of the wall of its old garden as well as the door through which Bernadette went in.

In fact, as we only have one dormitory, we haven't always been able to promise a safe space when asked. With a view to reopening in 2025, we are going to reorganise the space so that we have a larger, more welcoming dormitory, as well as a private room that can accommodate a couple/family or a small group of friends. We would like to make our space available for mixed periods for women and LGBT+ people, so that we can welcome them in a more inclusive, respectful and secure facility.
