Le petit-bornand-les-glieres : nature's gem in the Alps

A hike at the gates of the Aravis ! Discover the hamlets of the village of Petit Bornand (Glières-Val-de-Borne): Beffay, Saxias, le Villard, Chef-Lieu, les Lignières and Morat, you will discover a rich cultural and natural heritage. During this hike you will be able to see: the old castle of the Fichet account, the presbytery, a sulfurous spring, old farms, a chapel, the old house Guillaume Fichet... As for the landscape, you will have a view of the different peaks that surround the village: the Rochers de Leschaux, the Jallouvre peak, the Pointe de la Ballanfat, Rochers des Traversiers...

The Lac de Lessy, around which marmots and ibex make their home, is a stunning site at an altitude of 1733 m in the village of Le Petit-Bornand Glières-Val-de-Borne. It is one of the most beautiful walks in the Bornes-Aravis area. Departure: Pteret car park, Montagne de Paradis Difficulty: average Period: from May to October Views: Panoramic views from Pteret over the Arve valley and the Geneva basin. View of the Col de la Forclaz and the Col de la Buffaz Access: From the Mairie of Le Petit-Bornand, take the Puze road towards Paradis, then follow signs to Paradis. Park your car at the Pteret car park (ledge next to the chalets). Description: At the car park, take the path in the direction of "Lac de Lessy" and follow the track through the forest. Just in front of the Chalet du Lainvouet (last chalet), turn left in the direction of Lac de Lessy, then walk over the area of rocks. The path continues until it reaches a little valley of fallen rocks. The path crosses this and takes you to a section that is a little more difficult, from where you can use the ladder to reach the crest that overlooks the Mayse valley. Continue straight on along the mountainside towards the Col de la Forclaz from where you can spot the Lac de Lessy. Walk down to the chalets and the Lessy refuge. You can walk round the Lac de Lessy. Your return is by the same path. Herding dogs are present in the vicinity of the lake from the beginning of July to the end of September, they must be approached with great caution and certain instructions must be respected (see video link for explanation). Dogs must be kept on a lead. You can download the route map for this hike!

This hillside slopes are strong and covered by forest. Slope cotation : 11.2%. The Tour de France has been here in 2018 and will come back on 2020. The road led to the mountain pasture of the Plateau des Glières, you can cross this Plateau (stone path) to link with the Col des Glières (1400m).

Hike through landscapes of limestone rock, spruce forest and alpine pastures, in a place where history has left its mark. Walk in the footsteps of Officer Morel, whose charisma and determination instilled the spirit of Les Glières. Departing from Le Petit Bornand, this long hike takes you to the Plateau des Glières, passing between the foothills of Montagne des Auges and Montagne des Frêtes. Following a forest path, you first climb up to Fréchet. From here, you'll have a fine view over the Val de Borne, and you're at the gateway to the Plateau des Glières. Take the opportunity to contemplate the beautiful pasture landscapes stretching out before you: the Pâquis mountain pasture, the Chez Constance mountain pasture, the La Perrière mountain pasture... The area is steeped in pastoral tradition, which you'll be able to immerse yourself in as you stroll along. You'll also have the chance to sample local specialities at the famous Chez Constance Refuge-Restaurant. Walk in the footsteps of Théodose "Tom" Morel. The trail pays tribute to the lieutenant, leader of the Haute-Savoie Maquis during the German occupation between 1942 and 1944, whose feats of arms resonate in the memories of the Resistance. The round-trip route takes you as far as the Col de Glières. However, don't hesitate to extend your journey to the Monument National à la Résistance, inaugurated in 1972 with a speech by André Malraux and now classified as a Historic Monument.

This hike takes you around the foot of the Jalouvre, Le Petit-Bornand's highest peak (2408 m) and via the Col de Sosay from where you will be able to see the Lac de Lessy, the Jalouvre, the Pointe Blanche and the Plateau de Cenise. Views: Pointe de Sosay, Aiguilles Vertes, Col de Sosay, peak of Le Jallouvre, Plateau de Cenise, Aiguille Verte, Rochers de Leschaux Herding dogs are present on this trail (Col de Sosay from the beginning of June to the middle of July and around the lake from the beginning of July to the end of September). Their approach must be done with great caution and certain instructions must be respected.

A well marked itinerary between forests and alpine meadows, this hike will take you via the hamlet of Mayse with its goats and then to the Lac de Lessy. Views: Col de la Forclaz/Col de la Buffaz

Another varied stage with a reasonable distance and altitude difference, between alpine meadows and mountains of character. This fourth stage, starting from the Lessy refuge, will take you to the Pointe Percée refuge. This day will be punctuated by crossings of alpine pastures, lapiaz and exceptional views of the surrounding peaks. Take advantage of this stage to make a detour and climb to the summit of the Aiguille Verte du Chinaillon (2045m), which offers a spectacular panorama. The Pointe Percée refuge is the highlight of this fourth day.

You will like the view : the mountain range of Bargy, Les rochers de Leschaux, Arve Valley, and Leman lake... A real balcony suspended above the Arve valley, this peak culminates at 1877m. Its situation allows a dominant view on all the surrounding summits, particularly on the Bargy chain and the Aravis on one side, and the Mont-Blanc chain, the Geneva lake and the Jura massif on the other.

A quiet stroll in a majestic setting that makes our heads spin 360°. Landscapes of character open on the chain of Bargy and on the valley of Arve. The slope is gentle and the path wide. You will cross the alpine pastures until la Croix du Felay (a cross). From La Croix du Felay to Cenise Pass : 10mins From the cross, follow the path. The wide plateau opens in front of you and you will be able to see the Rochers de Leschaux on your right and le Bargy mountain range on your left. From the Pass to the car-park : Go back with the same route. Magnificent mountain lake lying in a gulley at the foot of the arête between the Pic du Jalouvre, the Buclon and the Aiguille Verte. From the arête itself a wonderful view opens up over Lake Geneva, the Jura mountains and the Aravis range to Mont Blanc. The lake, at 1730 m, is on the Grande Randonnee no.96. Lake Lessy is part of the Natura 2000 programme, which aims to protect remarkable environments. In terms of plant life, the lake is home to a very large population of alpine pondweed and a smaller population of thorny buttercup. In terms of amphibians, the lake has a colony of Alpine newts. In this context, swimming is strictly prohibited. The following are also strictly prohibited: - Camping. Camping is only permitted under the stars (i.e. without tents, tarps or other types of shelter) near the communal refuge at Lake Lessy, with the permission of the caretaker. - Campfires and outdoor fires, the use of stoves and barbecues. - Drones. - Slacklines. Fishing is permitted: 1 catch per day per fisherman, single barbless hook, natural bait or fly only. River permits are available for purchase at the Grand-Bornand Tourist Office.

The lake of Lessy is a high altitude lake located at 1730 m of altitude in Haute-Savoie, on the commune of Glières-Val-de-Borne (Petit-Bornand-les-Glières) in the Aravis massif. The access is only by hiking. This natural jewel nestled in the heart of the mountain pastures and at the foot of the Jallouvre and the Aiguille Verte offers a real postcard landscape. The various hiking trails to reach the lake are of medium to difficult difficulty: Cenise, Paradis & Mayse. It will take at least 3 hours to get there. It is a place not to be missed in our territory. From the top of the ridge, you will have magnificent views of the Aravis mountain range, Lake Geneva and Lake Lessy. The lake shelters a remarkable fauna and flora which it is necessary to preserve to continue to be enchanted by this magic site.

This sunny alpine pastureland, which hangs over the village of Brison stretches between the Pointe d'Andey and the Leschaux rocks. Above Brison, the Plateau de Solaison has alpine pastureland in summer and ski trails in the winter, in a protected natural setting. Already in the 19th century, tourists frequented the Solaison site. Every weekend, many of them still come from the valley below to gain a bit of altitude and enjoy the fresh air... There are about 50 alpine chalets dotted around, most of them residential and proof of na alpine grazing tradition. The chalets were once directly linked to Brison's farming life and alpine farmers. There are several information panels describing the flora, geology and pastureland that covers the plateau. The Plateau de Solaison is situated at an altitude of 1500 m, with wide untouched spaces amidst an unspoiled natural environment. Both in winter and summer, Solaison offers a wide range of activities. In the winter, there is cross-country skiing, ski touring, snow-shoeing and sledging. In the summer, hiking, mountain biking, climbing on the adventure trail, paragliding. Enough to satisfy everyone! Solaison also boasts amazing fauna and flora, the colours and smells of which will scent your country walks. From the plateau, you can climb up to the Pointe d'Andey from where you get a magnificent panoramic view over the valley.

To limit the disturbance of these species in winter, be sure to stay in the already existing tracks and not to deviate from the main routes.In order to guarantee the sustainability of the environments and species, which are very sensitive to disturbance and most of which are protected, but also in order to respect the work of the alpagists, it is our responsibility to be attentive to our practices and our behavior. Founded in 1677, the chapel is nestled in the heart of the old village of Le Chinaillon. Despite major renovation work to the building in 1977, it has retained its traditional appearance. Founded in 1677, the chapel of Le Chinaillon was placed under the patronage of Our Lady of Puy, so as to protect the inhabitants of the village from fire. On the facade, either side of the portal, are two original windows with a small niche above them in which there is a Virgin and Child. Since 1977, the Chapel has been placed under the patronage of Our Lady of the Snow. The exterior walls of the chapel were originally covered with plaster, but when important restoration work was undertaken in 1977 on the initiative of Barthélémy, a Capuchin brother, the stonework of the walls was uncovered and left apparent. Work on the interior of the chapel, in 2009, enabled a restoration of the softer original colors, which is what the villagers of Le Chinaillon had requested. Sitting on top of the chapel is a little steeple with a pyramid-shaped base and a dome above it. The dome tapers up to a point with a cross on its summit. In the steeple hangs a bell which was cast in 1901 by the Paccard brothers. Their foundry was in Annecy-Le-Vieux (today it is located in Sevrier). The pedestal with two small columns inside the chapel tells us that the original bell, in 1687, had Jean-Francois Sonnerat-Lanioz as its godfather and that in 1901, Victor Perrissin-Fabert was the godfather and Elisabeth Tochon-Danguy was its godmother. All his life, Alphonse Fournier used to ring the bell, and had done so faithfully ever since his return from the Second World War. Today however, the bell is electrified and it rings every day at noon and 7pm. On the left-hand side as you enter the chapel there is a painting, dating from 1687, of Saint Francois de Sales, Sainte Barbe (bearing the symbol of her martyrdom, the tower) and Saint- Juste (above a crowned Virgin and Child, most probably Our Lady of Puy, the patron saint of the chapel). This painting was donated by Dominique Tochon, the priest of Le Grand Bornand, and his dedication is written on the bottom of the painting. This painting was registered in the inventory of heritage monuments in April 1983. It has recently been restored. On the left-hand side as you enter the chapel there is a painting, dating from 1687, of Saint Francois de Sales, Sainte Barbe (bearing the symbol of her martyrdom, the tower) and Saint- Juste (above a crowned Virgin and Child, most probably Our Lady of Puy, the patron saint of the chapel). This painting was donated by Dominique Tochon, the priest of Le Grand Bornand, and his dedication is written on the bottom of the painting. This painting was registered in the inventory of heritage monuments in April 1983. It has recently been restored. The painting in the centre, reflecting the same theme, is dedicated to the Virgin and Child with Saint François de Sales on her left and Sainte Barbe on her right. Jean Angelloz-Diron, probably an immigrant from Le Grand Bornand, donated this painting in 1822 (cf : the gift donated to the church from the Angelloz-Nicoud family, also during the XIX century) This painting is framed by two twisted colonnades with cherubs, one with a Virgin on top of it and the other a cross. This setting is typical of the Baroque style (end of XVII/XVIII century). Until 2009, the main altar was a block of granite but it has since been replaced by a simple, contemporary wooden altar. Note also the statue of a Virgin and Child mounted on a star-studded globe. The stained glass windows were designed and made in1977 by the artist Mrs Mongeaud from Thonon-les-Bains. The first set of windows shows the daily life of the local population: the bee hive represents the hard working ethic of mountain life while the sheep in the pasture expresses peace and gentleness. There are several features of Christian symbolism : the doves for peace, the grapes and the ears of wheat for the bread and the wine of the Eucharist. The smallest stained glass window is rather more enigmatic, representing Saint Charles sleeping at the feet of his horse.

At the foot of the climbing site of La Culaz, in the middle of the mountain pastures and facing the Aravis mountain range, this high altitude restaurant is sublimated by the wood and stone of the old farmhouse dating from the end of the 18th century. Starting point for hikes in the Jalouvre Massif. Breathtaking view of the Aravis mountain range which spreads over its entire length.

The restaurant " Chez Constance" has been opened in 1974 by Constance and her husband. This old chalet became overs the years a mountain shelter where it's good to come and recharge. Stop off at the refuge de Lessy, a warm and welcoming mountain refuge where simplicity is the order of the day. This refuge is situated on the edge of Lac de Lessy, set against a fabulous mountain backdrop. Its owners are also alpine farmers. The refuge sleeps 24 (overnight or half-board).The refuge is equipped with running water but no shower.
