The road to freedom is a historic route. The Couserans, which borders Spain, has been a strategic crossing point since time immemorial, particularly during the darkest hours of our history. History of the road to freedom : After the German offensive of May 1940 and the division of France into two parts occupied zone in the North and a free zone in the South, many civilians and soldiers, fleeing a world of persecution, imprisonment and executions that was inseparable from Nazi barbarism, took refuge as soon as they could in this free zone, synonymous with hope. Their common denominator was the vital need to leave France and reach Spain by crossing the Pyrenees, either simply out of an instinct for survival, or to resist inexorably the unbearable oppression. Nearly 3,000 people - 2,506 men and 158 women - crossed the Spanish border through the Couserans during the Second World War. Among the various routes, one of the most emblematic and representative is the Chemin de la Liberté, already mentioned above, linking Saint-Girons to Sort across the Pyrenees, via Mont-Valier.

Starting in Saint-Girons, this trail offers great views over the Salat valley and the high peaks. After just a few climbs, you'll already be in the mountains!

During this country walk, you'll have the chance to contemplate beautiful panoramic views of the Pyrenean mountain range and the valleys. Discover the old marble quarry and pass by the rock-climbing crags.

This pretty loop takes you through the woods and meadows of the Couserans region, where you can admire beautiful views of the border chain and some fine barns. A beautiful loop around the village of Moulis in the Castillonnais valley. - After the parking lot, turn right and then straight on up Rue de la Hount. You will pass by the Pouech castle and wash-house. - Continue uphill, following the yellow signposts, which branch off to the left as you climb up to the Granges de Paracoch at 672 m. From here, you can take in the view of the high peaks of the Couserans. - At the junction of the 2 barns, take the path down to the left. Halfway down the slope, at the crossroads, follow the yellow signs to Pouech, crossing the old farming terraces. Follow the path downhill, catching a track on the left and the road that takes you back to Pouech, passing a maginette (small oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary).

This looping route passes through small villages and hedgerows, offering a variety of panoramic views of the Pyrenees and the surrounding hills. Part of the trail follows the Chemin de la Liberté.

A very sunny walk. The path passes through undergrowth and rises above the Vallée du Lez, offering superb views of the high border peaks.

Departing from the small village of Contrazy, this pleasant hike will take you between forest and open views, to contemplate the hills of the foothills topped by the Pyrenean massif. This walk will take you to the highest point in the Volvestre Ariègeois at an altitude of 698 m (signposted). This walk begins on a very pretty path leading up to the ‘old canton of St Girons’. As you follow this boundary, you'll be treated to a beautiful panoramic view of the hilly commune of Montesquieu-Avantès and its farms scattered throughout the landscape. At the end of the forest (marked by a milestone), you will know that you are at the meeting point of three cantons, Le Mas d'Azil to the east, St Girons to the south and Ste Croix to the west, and four communes, Camarade, Montesquieu-Aventès, Contrazy and Mauvezin de Ste Croix. On the way back to Contrazy, just before the village, you'll discover a magnificent view of Lasserre and the Pyrenees, overlooking the church at Montardit. You can also enjoy a view of the fir forest, which in autumn offers a patchwork of colours from the dark green of the firs to the shimmering colours of the broad-leaved trees.

A gourmet hike is organized on the Trail at P'art on Thursday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hiking open to all. Jump in your walking shoes for a gourmet day in a picturesque village of the Astarac: Simorre! Accompanied by a Pass'enGers guide, you will start the day with a 4 km hike (80 m cumulative elevation gain) on the A p'Art trail. This course is punctuated by works of art in the heart of nature and offers a beautiful panorama of the Gers hills. At the end of the hike, you will discover the history of this picturesque village where wooden houses and brick architecture compete in elegance, as well as the architecture of the abbey-church redesigned by Viollet-Le-Duc. At lunchtime, a gourmet picnic awaits you, consisting only of local products: duck and black pork terrines, vegetarian tartines, melon, floc de Gascogne and craft beers, Côtes de Gascogne wine, apple juice, biscuits... Everything comes from a radius of 50 km maximum. In the afternoon, you will be able to visit independently the peasant museum, and admire its reproductions of mastodons (not included in the price). Nestling in a small valley in the Pyrenean foothills between Foix and Saint-Girons, Combelongue Abbey and its gardens, which have been awarded the Jardin Remarquable label, offer the charm and prestige of a place steeped in history. Founded in 1138 by the Count of Pallars, Combelongue Abbey is the only Romanesque abbey in the Couserans region. It is one of the jewels in the crown of the region's heritage. Its Mudejar-influenced architecture is exceptional on this slope of the Pyrenees, and the sculpted decoration is pure and symbolic. Contemporary stained-glass windows adorn the abbey church.

A timeless walk. The gardens of Combelongue Abbey, poetic and inspired, sometimes intimate, sometimes wide open to the landscape, are a happy and simple blend of ‘combed and wild’. A new conception of gardens in which nature has its rightful place, a subtle coherence with the monument for which they serve as a showcase. Medieval garden, Renaissance garden, nave of greenery, theatre of greenery, orchard, contemporary formal garden, landscape insertion... Visitors will find themselves in a moment of suspended serenity. The gardens have been awarded the Jardin Remarquable label by the French Ministry of Culture.

Dating from the 11th to 14th centuries, the Romanesque church has been altered over the centuries. The 15th-century murals can be admired at events such as markets, guided tours, evening visits and the European Heritage Days. In the centre of the village, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste immediately catches the eye with its impressive crenellated bell tower-wall. Built in the 14thᵉ century in the Gothic style, it contains some real architectural and artistic treasures. To discover the interior of the church, simply contact the Town Hall: a guided tour or the provision of a key will open the doors to this place steeped in history. Admire the Gothic portal: its sculpted arches, known as voussures, are decorated with chimeras that are half-bird, half-reptile - creatures inspired by the basilisk of Greek mythology. The interior of the church consists of a wide nave extended by a pentagonal rib-vaulted choir. Beneath the sober architecture lies an exceptional painted decoration, frescoed in the early XVIᵉ century. On the north wall of the nave, a series of fifteen scenes illustrate the key moments of Christ's Passion, from the entry into Jerusalem to the burial. The choir's triumphal arch is brighter and features a scene of the Annunciation. A black band punctuated with coats of arms, known as a funerary litre, runs along the inside walls. It pays tribute to the lord of Villemur, who died in Montaut in 1571, and whose coat of arms appears on the choir's keystone. The central vault features Christ in glory, surrounded by the Tetramorph - the four symbols of the evangelists: lion, bull, eagle and winged man. The back wall features the two Saints John: the Evangelist and the Baptist, dominated by a representation of the Last Supper. On the south wall, several scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist are illustrated, from his birth to his martyrdom.

Since 1899, the Auberge de Fougaron has been located in a quiet village at the bottom of a valley. It retains the conviviality and authenticity of Pyrenean villages. The Gîte de l'Auberge is a group gîte just opposite the Auberge, with a garden and views of the woods and mountains for 10 people. 1 children's bedroom (bunk bed, 2 single beds on ground floor) with shower and toilet. 4 bedrooms with showers and toilets in the communal areas, (with double beds) The gîte also includes a lounge, dining room and fully-equipped kitchen. A games room with table tennis is available, as are parking spaces, wifi, a television and a large enclosed garden. Bed linen included Special facilities for cyclists: On-site repair and washing workshop, advice from a qualified mountain bike instructor, equipped with a trailer for 10 bikes.
