Along the spectacular valley of the Meuse, the greenway path Trans' Ardennes offers an easy route of 120 km between Sedan, Charleville-Mezieres and Givet, where it connects to the Belgian Ravel. 

Come and breathe in the pure atmosphere of this small valley in the heart of the Élan national forest. 

Given its position at the crossroads of the Germanic and Latin parts of Europe, the Ardennes region is strewn with evidence of its tumultuous and violent past. The powerful fortresses which tower over the landscape from high rocky outcrops have given rise to myths and legends. Their thick walls bear witness to a thousand years of sieges, wars and pillage. Bouillon, Herbeumont, Sedan and Montcornet still echo to the clash of swords and the songs of minstrels. In the light-filled valley of the Meuse, wealthy cities developed, but their riches had to be defended. The Fortifications Trail takes you along these mediaeval commercial roads, where the fate of Europe was decided on countless occasions.

From the valley of the Meuse to Préardennaises peaks, this route is a concentrate of the Ardennes. Starting from Sedan, you will pass by and enjoy Charleville-Mezieres and its surroundings, then down to the Crets sPréardennaises (vast territory with more than 90 municipalities ...) and go up to Sedan. You can follow pretty country lanes and some secondary roads which will allow you to make stops to enjoy the architectural heritage of towns and villages or simply the natural surroundings: castle, old coaching inn of the 17th century, former blast furnace or charming flowered village, point of view ...

Allow two days for this route, used for centuries to travel between Sedan castle and Bouillon castle in Belgium. A walk where water, the forest and nature are omnipresent. Although neighbours, these two regions belong to very separate lands. One nestles in a fold of the Ardennes massif, while the other stretches along the banks of the Meuse river, near the first slope of the Parisian basin. The two towns have been sisters for a thousand years, linked by history since the signing of the Treaty of Verdun in 843 dividing up the Carolingian Empire. Along this circuit you can explore Europe’s largest feudal castle in Sedan, experience Godfrey’s first crusade at the castle and archeoscope in Bouillon and take part in medieval festivals… all in an outstanding forest setting. Do you like nature, walks on flat terrain, bats and/or Orval Abbey? This nice and easy walk is for you!  This signposted 5.5km route, in a loop starting from the crossroads near Orval Abbey, takes you to see how the bats live, meet a herd of Highland cows and explore the roots of a Cistercian valley.

Of the prestigious castle that was almost a "Versailles" in the 18th century, remains nothing but the Bouveries (cattel shed) arranged in a common horseshoe. Now it houses stud farm. 

The Saint-Germain church is decorated with anogival portal dating from the 14th century, with an openwork tympanum of a rosewindow. The overmantel houses the statue of Saint-Germain, patron saint of thechurch.

Built between 1615 and 1624, Saint-Juvin is a real small fortress: high and thick walls, narrow windows, corner towers.... Claude de Joyeuse (Count of Grandpré), the priest Didier Mauclerc and the inhabitants of Saint-Juvin took part in its construction. The church is open every day from April to October, from November to March only on weekends. Possibility to follow a guided tour by appointment.

Saint-Médard church has a 13th century porch tower, the oldest part of the building. The nave and choir, in Gothic style, date from the 15th century. Inside, it houses the mausoleum of Claude de Joyeuse, Lord of Grandpré. The church is open every day of the year.

The Castle of Marcq was built in 1760 by the lord and blacksmith Nicolas Dérué. Its brick and stone facades form a perfect symmetry. The castle has been listed as a historical monument since 2002. Château de Marcq opens its doors to you from Monday to Friday, from July 15 to August 15. Also on Saturdays by appointment.

The church of Saint-Martin was rebuilt afterthe fighting of May 1940. Its fortified porch tower houses an elegantflamboyant gate. Inside the church, one of the stones is dated 977 and isconsidered one of the oldest in the Ardennes department. Visits to the church are only possible onrequest at the town hall.

One of the most beautiful views of the Ardennes culminating at 338 metres. Ancient Gallo-Roman burial mound on the Roman road from Reims - Trier. This natural hill was enhanced and transformed into an observation post in the second century. From the summit, accessible via a stairway, the view of the vast forest of Argonne is breathtaking. As the stage of tank battle between the French and Germans in May 1940, the site was captured and recaptured 17 times in 4 days. The village was completely destroyed.

The Castle of Cornay is a castle that has kept its Renaissance style over the centuries. This style can be recognized by its mullioned windows, neo-Gothic curves and bas-relief shells. The facades are built with a local stone called gaize. The exterior is freely accessible from July to September. For the most curious, it is possible to visit the interior of the castle by appointment (Monday to Saturday).

With its 200 metres length, 5 metres width and 9 arches, the highest of which is 30 metres, take a step back and explore the Ariétal Viaduct! Built between 1932 and 1934, this structure was used to link Reims, Sedan and Metz by rail. It was part of a system designed to supply the Maginot line. Partially destroyed by the French in June 1940, it was repaired by the Germans in 1941; the rails were dismantled in 1943 and sent to the Eastern Front. It is now unused, but for the most reckless of you, the association Adrenaline Elastique offers you the opportunity to experience bungee jumping from the viaduct! So, are you jumping?

Here, at the heart of a lost valley, stand a few scattered buildings: this is all that remains of the Carthusian monastery of Mont-Dieu, once one of the largest monastic centres of western Europe. In 1084, Bruno of Cologne, in search of a life of solitude, austerity and prayer, withdrew to the heart of the alpine massif, to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, a virgin, isolated area. With his six companions, he founded a ‘wilderness’ here. The Order soon spread throughout France: the first prior of the ‘Grande Chartreuse’ came to the Ardennes and in Mont Dieu he found the ideal spot to live according to the rules of the Carthusians, observing total silence and living as hermits in small houses. The rows of shrubs that now adorn the site bear witness to the 180 arcades that led these solitary monks, three times a day, from their cell to the church.
