Along the spectacular valley of the Meuse, the greenway path Trans' Ardennes offers an easy route of 120 km between Sedan, Charleville-Mezieres and Givet, where it connects to the Belgian Ravel. 

Given its position at the crossroads of the Germanic and Latin parts of Europe, the Ardennes region is strewn with evidence of its tumultuous and violent past. The powerful fortresses which tower over the landscape from high rocky outcrops have given rise to myths and legends. Their thick walls bear witness to a thousand years of sieges, wars and pillage. Bouillon, Herbeumont, Sedan and Montcornet still echo to the clash of swords and the songs of minstrels. In the light-filled valley of the Meuse, wealthy cities developed, but their riches had to be defended. The Fortifications Trail takes you along these mediaeval commercial roads, where the fate of Europe was decided on countless occasions.

Allow two days for this route, used for centuries to travel between Sedan castle and Bouillon castle in Belgium. A walk where water, the forest and nature are omnipresent. Although neighbours, these two regions belong to very separate lands. One nestles in a fold of the Ardennes massif, while the other stretches along the banks of the Meuse river, near the first slope of the Parisian basin. The two towns have been sisters for a thousand years, linked by history since the signing of the Treaty of Verdun in 843 dividing up the Carolingian Empire. Along this circuit you can explore Europe’s largest feudal castle in Sedan, experience Godfrey’s first crusade at the castle and archeoscope in Bouillon and take part in medieval festivals… all in an outstanding forest setting. From the valley of the Meuse to Préardennaises peaks, this route is a concentrate of the Ardennes. Starting from Sedan, you will pass by and enjoy Charleville-Mezieres and its surroundings, then down to the Crets sPréardennaises (vast territory with more than 90 municipalities ...) and go up to Sedan. You can follow pretty country lanes and some secondary roads which will allow you to make stops to enjoy the architectural heritage of towns and villages or simply the natural surroundings: castle, old coaching inn of the 17th century, former blast furnace or charming flowered village, point of view ...

ATTENTION WALK CLOSED FOR THE MOMENT. Nice and easy walk to the Charlier viewpoint and among other things to the most famous oak tree in the region, which may date from the 17th century. Nice view around the Ferme des Mouches with the possibility to admire the remarkable oak tree of Les Mouches. The descent from Dos de Loup offers a view to the east of Bouillon.The most famous oak tree in the Bouillon area is French! It owes its preservation to Belgians who protected it, notably in 1870, when the Prussians, at war with the French, began to cut it down. Then, in 1970, when the effects of the drought almost killed it, a rejuvenation pruning of the dead branches and a pruning gave it a new youth. At the end of the last century, hit by a lightning strike that stripped the bark from the entire length of the trunk and a width of one to two metres, the French put a plant tar on the bast and the oak survived.

Along easy paths, the old tramway, go for a nice little family walk to discover magnificent panoramas of the town of Bouillon and its famous castle. 

A family mountain bike ride, for older children who are already quite sporty given the 700 m gradient. On the whole, the trails are fairly wide, with gravel and dirt. 2 short technical sections. Entering the House of the Last Cartridge is to be immersed in a unique place that has kept its authentic and moving character. The Sedan aquatic centre is open all year round except during technical closures which take place twice a year: at the end of Dec/Jan and at the end of June/beginning of July. Museum in douzy, come and see a reproduction of the 1910 Roger Sommer biplane, one of the 182 airplanes built in Mouzon between from 1908 to 1911, as well as airplane blueprints historical documents.

The bell tower of Notre-Dame church was built in 1832, as can be seen from the date stamp on the ashlar inside, above the oculus. The rest of the building was rebuilt in 1848 to plans by architect Auguste Reimbeau. Notre-Dame church is located in the centre of the village. It has an elongated plan. The single nave is preceded by the bell tower, the ground floor of which serves as the entrance vestibule. The choir takes the form of a semicircular apse with a polygonal volume. The sacristy backs onto the north side, straddling the choir and apse. The building is built of limestone rubble with a Dom-le-Mesnil limestone ashlar chain. The inside faces of the walls are rendered. The nave has a concrete floor and the choir is covered with a checkerboard pattern of veined black and red marble and limestone slabs under the pews. The building has a single storey with large semi-circular windows, and the bell tower has three, including an intermediate space on the upper floor and the bell chamber at the top. All the interior spaces have ceilings. The entire building has a slate roof. The nave is covered by a long-sloped roof, the apse by a polygonal hipped roof, the sacristy by a long-sloped and hipped roof and the bell tower by a polygonal spire.

Château de Lamécourt, in Bazeilles, is a jewel in the crown of the local heritage. Nestling in a green setting, this elegant building bears witness to the rich and eventful history of the region. Probably built between the XVIIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries, this stately home has stood the test of time, housing generations of owners linked to the military and economic history of the Ardennes. Its strategic location in Bazeilles, a place scarred by fighting in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, adds a special historical dimension. Today, Château de Lamécourt remains a source of interest for heritage enthusiasts, attracting visitors with its timeless charm and soothing setting.

The Ternaux spinning mill, created at the beginning of the 19ᵉ century, supplied the Sedan cloth factory. Established on a former metallurgical site, it passed to the Montagnacs in 1858. Production stopped at Lamécourt in 1952-1953 when it was transferred to Sedan. Today, the buildings house a timber merchant. The buildings, mainly from the 19ᵉ century, comprise two limestone rubble vessels with reinforced concrete sheds, two brick extensions with wooden roofs, an engine room with skylight, the remains of a chimney and a still-visible retention basin. A building in the south-east corner could be part of the original ironwork.

Saint-Rémi church, built in 1865, is located on the southern outskirts of the village, with a south-facing chancel. It has an elongated floor plan, with a single nave preceded by a bell tower, the ground floor of which serves as a vestibule. The bell tower is flanked by two off-stairs, one of which houses a staircase leading to the attic. The chancel comprises a straight bay and a three-sided apse, with a sacristy adjoining the north side. The building, built of limestone rubble, uses red brick for the quoins and buttresses, and ashlar for the surrounds. Inside, the walls are rendered and the floor is covered with polychrome cement tiles. It has a single storey lit by large round-headed windows. The bell tower includes an entrance vestibule, an organ loft and a bell chamber. The interiors have ceilings. The slate roofs cover the nave and choir with long-sloped roofs, the apse with a polygonal hipped roof, the sacristy with a shed roof, and the bell tower with a polygonal spire.

This chapel was built at the request of Abbé Thomas, the parish priest in the 19th century. He had made a vow to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours during a war and had walked to Paris to find the money needed to build this chapel in place of a damaged calvary. He wanted to affiliate his pilgrimage with the Confrérie Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, and his entry was one of the first in 1841. It was on this date that the pilgrimage began, on the first Sunday in May, and the hotel was donated by the owners of the Château de Reméhan. This small square chapel has a pavilion roof covered in slate. It is a single room, with waxed panelling on all three walls. The west wall consists of two wooden panels with translucent white glass louvres protected by a wrought iron grille. The shell is limestone rubble and the door frame is Dom-le-Mesnil ashlar. Access is via a small stone staircase with two steps.

It is crossed by several streams, including, from north to south, the Rubécourt stream, which used to supply water to the retention basins of the spinning mill. This stream also feeds the Marbrerie pond. Ruisseau le Rule is 11.8 km long. Its other name is ruisseau le Rûle. In the village of Rubécourt-et-Lamécourt, you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the stream.

The bell tower (and probably the nave) was rebuilt in 1822, as indicated by the date on a cartouche on the west façade, below the clock (the bell was supplied the following year). In 1834, Pierre Cornu from Bazeilles tendered for the extension of the church: this most likely involved the construction of the apse and sacristy. The single-vessel nave is preceded by a western section comprising a bell tower in the centre, flanked by a chapel to the south and the spiral staircase to the north. The choir is preceded by a fore-choir bay and comprises a straight bay and a polygonal semicircular apse against which the sacristy is built. The building is built of limestone rubble with a limestone ashlar chain and the bell tower is rendered. The inside faces of the walls are rendered. The floor of the nave is covered with Romery limestone tiles and that of the choir with a checkerboard of black and grey marble. The building has a single storey with large semi-circular windows. The nave, the fore-choir bay and the right choir bay are vaulted by a barrel vault and the apse by a cul-de-four. The entire building has a slate roof. The nave, sacristy and choir are covered by a long-sloped roof, the apse by a polygonal hipped roof and the bell tower by a polygonal spire.

The spinning mill, built in 1824, employed 67 people in 1945 before ceasing operations in 1959 and being converted into a farm. The entrance to the site, flanked by a caretaker's lodge and industrial shops, leads to two two-storey manufacturing buildings. The central three-storey building has disappeared. To the west, along the Rue de Pouru-aux-Bois, are manufacturing workshops with six bays of shed roofing. The site, which is crossed by a stream fed by a reservoir, is built of limestone rubble with exposed timber frames. The building is in a poor state of repair.
