For those who love walking or cycling, the Green Routes in France and the RAVeL in Belgium open the doors to the most secret corners of both countries. As you cycle along the banks of the Meuse or hike through the secret Oignies Forest, you will understand why these long-distance paths are known as “happy trails”. They only rarely cross roads, so you can cycle or walk in complete peace! The path along the beautiful Meuse valley crosses the river several times on ancient bridges that are works of art. The path that leads to Nismes Forest follows the route taken by the old stopping trains from station to station. But above all, these paths allow you to discover countryside that is inaccessible by car.

Tortueuse et paisible, la Semoy se dévoile au gré de la voie verte. This 3 meter-large greenway was partly set up on an ancient railroad and is currently being improved. Many sections will be tarred.

Nice quiet forest walk with not too much height difference. At the end of the quiet track leading out of the village, you come to a pleasant covered picnic area. The walk then follows wide paths through the forest with mainly deciduous trees. You pass the Chêne au Visage, an impressive natural monument. The Fontaine l'Ermite and a dilapidated tree-hugger's hut give you an impression of a long past.  

A nice refreshing walk on very easy paths that will take you to discover the pretty deciduous forest. You will pass by the VITA track and the pleasant Chahaye pond. This pond is a great place to relax, picnics and barbecues are available. For PRM or pushchairs (in dry weather), start at the pond of La Chahaye for a 2 km walk.

Overlooking the plain of the same name, Mont Olympe Park is accessible via the Vieux Moulin footbridge, behind the Vieux Moulin or Musée Rimbaud, and its footpaths lead to the top of this hill which, before Charleville was founded in the 17th century, was known as the colline du Chastelet after the ancient Roman oppidum that protected the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Castrice. Charles de Gonzague built a small fortress here to protect his new town and port, which was razed at the end of the century at the behest of Louis XIV. The remains of an ancient lookout tower, or Tour Lolot, can still be seen on its heights, named after the wealthy iron industrialist who owned a private park there. The park was bought by the town in 1927 and opened to the public. For generations, it became a favourite spot for lovers. Another point of interest, at the foot of the park and in certain places, are the numerous outcrops of violet schist, proving that the famous Ardenne massif begins here.

Château des Fées, also known as Château du Waridon, is a medieval fortress whose ruins are located on the upper reaches of the French Meuse at Le Waridon (commune of Montcy-Notre-Dame) in the Ardennes département, and whose origins date back to between the ninth and eleventh centuries. The ‘Château des Fées’ is located at an altitude of 175 metres, on a natural hill called the Waridon, overlooking the Meuse at the point where two streams, the Fontaine and the Soiru, meet, to the north of Charleville-Mézières. The motte, which is oval in shape and 8.50 metres high, is separated from the rest of the plateau by a ditch. The south-western part of the site has been extensively damaged by recent quarrying. The exact circumstances surrounding the creation of the site remain uncertain; however, it is likely that a Roman settlement on the other side of the Meuse gradually expanded onto the slopes of the Waridon. In the late 9th or early 10th century, a fortification was built by Bernard, Count of Porcien. In 933, the site was captured and destroyed by Richer, Bishop of Tongeren. Only the motte has been excavated, revealing the remains of a primitive wooden building that occupied the top of the mound, but all that remains are the imprints of a few post holes.Subsequently, a rectangular stone structure (17.50 x 9.80 m), similar to an aula, seems to have replaced the wooden structure. A large part of the surviving walls are of herringbone construction. Three small annexes were added on either side of the aula. A layer of fire, in which crossbow bolts, arrowheads, Andenne-type ceramics and coins were found, suggests that the final destruction of the site dates from the first half of the 12th century. The site has now been turned into a leisure area, but part of it can still be accessed via a short footpath.

The Rimbaud myth is a little like the James Dean of the 19th century: his life was short but rich. Everything has been said about Rimbaud... But despite everything that has been written, all the studies, the genius of this rascal remains inexplicable. Rimbaud is the young man who discovered perfect poetry, at a stroke. He wrote his first poem at the age of 15 and completed his work at 21, laying down his pen forever. In just six years, this young man was to revolutionise French poetry. The museum, an old 17th-century mill, contains some remarkable illustrations of the poems by Picasso, Cocteau and Fernand Léger. It houses the personal effects of Rimbaud and his trunk, with which he went to the ends of the earth. Information: This museum will be closed in 2014 while work is carried out. Until it reopens, a space dedicated to the poet is open to the public in the Museum of the Ardennes.

Rimbaud was to make some amazing journeys. He thought only of leaving, to flee the Ardennes town which at the time was in the midst of an industrial revolution, and his mother’s home village, Roche. His travels were to take him to the four corners of the earth, to the Dutch East Indies and to Jakarta… He worked in Greece, joined the Dutch colonial army only to desert three months later, and went as far as Ethiopia. Thanks to lighting effects along with video shows and photographs, visitors can enter this world of travel, strangely sensing a certain tension in this virtual world: the modernity of Rimbaud makes itself felt, naturally.

The Maison des Ailleurs, which has been awarded the Maison des Illustres label by the French Ministry of Culture, is an extension of the visit to the Arthur Rimbaud Museum. Vitalie Rimbaud and her children moved into this house, which consisted of three flats, in 1869. For six years, until 1875, she lived on the first floor. The young Arthur lived within these walls from the age of 15 to 21, during a period of intense poetic creation. It was undoubtedly here that some of his world-famous poems were written.

The factory founded by the Grandry brothers in 1848 in Nouzonville was relocated to Sablé (Sarthe) during the Second World War. It moved to Mézières in 1954 under the name Fonderies Grandry S.A. to specialise in cast steel fittings (fountain valves) and public works equipment. The original buildings consist of offices and brick manufacturing workshops, built in the 1950s. An automatic moulding workshop was installed at the end of the 1980s. The site closed in 2003 and has remained derelict ever since. The Grandry plant employed 130 people in 1995, producing 350 tonnes of parts a month. he main entrance, on rue Jules Lobet, is flanked by the offices, a rendered brick building with a square floor covered by a pavilion roof and mechanical tiles. The main workshop consists of three bays with brick panelled walls. The long-sloped metal roof, covered in asbestos cement, is supported by metal lattice girders. To the east and north, more recent workshops are built in the same way, with a metal structure with sheet metal cladding. To the south, the model shops feature a succession of metal-framed sheds topped by concrete block walls.

The Arthur Rimbaud Museum is a must-see place to learn more about the iconic poet born in Charleville. Located in the heart of the historic centre, it offers visitors the chance to discover the life and work of Arthur Rimbaud through the poet's manuscripts and numerous works by contemporary artists such as Picasso, Léger, Giacometti, Cocteau, Max Ernst, Sonia Delaunay and, closer to home, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, all of whom were inspired by Rimbaud's poems and figure. The Arthur Rimbaud Museum has over 2,000 works in its collection. These include autograph manuscripts such as "Voyelles" and "A la musique", photographs taken by Arthur Rimbaud, including self-portraits and snapshots of his daily life in Africa, and artists' books, veritable works of art, illustrating Rimbaud's poetry.

Former Ardennes brewery The buildings, erected at the beginning of the 17th century near Place Ducale, were converted into a brewery at the beginning of the 20th century by Henri Masse, master brewer until 1936. At that time, the company housed a beer depot for the Coq Ardennais brewery. A workshop was added in the courtyard at the beginning of the 20th century. The business seems to have been limited to a depot from the 1960s onwards, and the site has now been converted to residential use. Four buildings surround a square courtyard accessed via a porch beneath the main house. On the street side, the mansion combines ashlar and brick, while the courtyard façade is of limestone rubble. The former offices and workshop, built of rubble stone, have wooden frames covered in slate. The brewery includes three large cellars, and a small timber-framed and brick building, added later, adjoins the north wall.
