Tradition has it that this toponym owes its origin to the passing of Julius Caesar. The etymology of Juliau does indeed point to the name or forename Julius, but really has no connection with Caesar! Then take the St Jean le Centenier direction to reach ARGENCE DIRECTION: ST JEAN LE CENTENIER by crossing the hamlet of Lablachère. Continue, passing through THEOULE The term théoule, from the Occitan teule : tile, means the place where tiles and pottery were fired. Return to the village via the path in the direction of St Jean le Centenier.

At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

This beautiful hike will introduce you to Beaumont’s natural heritage via a botanical trail. You’ll cross open landscapes with beautiful views and pass through shady woodland too. P - Cross the Pont du Gua and take the road left for 100 metres. The path starts at the edge of the road on the right, and follows the Tour du Tanargue GRP ().   Colobrouze. The path climbs in a zig zag up to La Roche ().   La Roche. Follow the path to Clément.   Clément. Leave the GPR and take a path on your left () past a wall. The path continues and then descends. Cross several streams and fairly dense woodland, then climb up to Flacouze (N.B. on your right as you climb, you’ll see a beautiful spring).  Flacouze. Take the road. After several bends, take the path on the left after the fire reservoir to Bisourne.   Bisourne. Follow the road to get back to your starting point.

What are the oldest European monuments? No doubt the Dolmens and Menhirs, the emblematic "monuments" of the Megalithic era. They were the work of the earliest farmers and breeders living in Neolithic Europe, the last prehistoric period.

On the first slopes of the Cévennes, the hamlets and houses of Ribes are spread along “faïsses” or terraces, home to vines and olive trees. P - Turn left opposite the signpost. Follow the tarmac road for a few metres and turn right onto a dirt track, then turn left down the steps to the Alune stream. Cross the stream at a ford, turn right and walk along the river until you reach a small submersible bridge where you can cross back over the stream. Twenty metres after the bridge, turn right onto a path that leads up to the village through chestnut trees and vineyards. When you reach the tarmac road, turn left to leave the hamlet. Before the bridge, turn right between the houses and go up to the street. Turn left to Mas de Laffont.   Mas de Laffont - Follow Prades 2,6 km, Ribes 0,6 km. Pass the Flaüts fountain and then take the tarmac road to the right. At the hairpin bend, turn right. After a bend, pass the rubbish collection point, take a path on the left that climbs between the vines.  Cross over the tarmac road and take the steps between the houses up to the church in the middle of Ribes.  Ribes - Follow Prades 2 km, Saint André Lachamp 6,9 km. When you reach the first houses, turn left to take a small alley in the hamlet of Les Clots. Take the tarmac road at the hairpin bend. Take the road to the left that goes up to Le Serre.  Le Serre - Follow Prades 1,4 km. The road winds upwards to the last houses. The trail continues via steps on the side of the mountain and then curves right. As you begin to descend, ignore the track to your left and continue along the path. After descending, join the track, and go left until you get to Prades.   Prades - Follow Info Rando 2,7 km, Ribes 1,6 km. Continue along the path on the right. About 100m further on, take the path that leads to the hamlet of Labeaume. Pass through the entire hamlet then carry on until you reach the hamlet of Le Gelly via the tarmac road.   Le Gelly - Follow Info rando 1,2 km, Joyeuse 4,5 km. Take the road and at the first crossroads, go right. Continue straight on until you’re level with a stone cross. After a chestnut grove, at the stone cross, leave the road via a “calade” or stone path down to Le Prat.  Le Prat - Follow Info rando 0,6 km. At the crossroads, go down the steps on the left and follow the path that brings you back to the multi-purpose hall.

An atypical hamlet on the banks of the Ardèche, accessible only on foot - a challenge launched fifty years ago by more than 12,000 young volunteers who have come to restore the ruins and breathe new life into an area that has been abandoned for a century. Remarkable natural site - Basalt columnar. Of volcanic origin, the Coiron has the shape of an oak leaf, formed by basalt flows during volcanic eruptions that occurred. It stretches from the Escrinet pass to the Rhône Valley and dominates the limestone lands of the lower Vivarais. It stands out very clearly in the landscape by its black cliffs which we call Basaltic Organs. We will find them near our villages like St jean le Centenier, St Pons, Mirabel,… You just have to look at the landscape to find them. Here the basalt organs which form vertically when the lava cools are clearly visible. The slower the cooling, the more regular the prisms (organs) are.

Oppidum de Jastres-Nord is a Gallic oppidum of the barred spur type, overlooking the River Ardèche. On the accessible side, it is defended by a monumental wall showing three stages of construction. The first is represented by a stone dry wall, and divided the oppidum into 4 acres, dating 130 AC. Then, the enlargement of the oppidum translates into a massive book luminous square towers engaged in the work. An external key, usually found in camps Roman and serves as a forward defence of the door, and the use of the mortar to bind the nucleus are observed in this second phase dating back to 80 AC. Finally, a third phase, about 50 AC, double this construction of vibrant, alternately round and square towers. The latter State more widely uses the mortar for siding and towers. The back of these fortifications is noticeable a habitat composed of houses interspersed by a network of different sizes. This site is the former Chief City of the Helviens place, prior to the creation of Alba Helviorum.

The construction of the church date the 17th century. No remains of that period are present today, but its existence is referred to as early as the 11th century. Interesting elements to note can be found on the church's Roman style entrance covered by a more modern bell tower. It has a three vaulted arched entrance. The one on the right may date to Roman times and is embellished by a four legged human figure.

This tower is the only thing that remains of the castle.

It is the highest village in this area-from here you have a real birds eye view. At one time a fortified wall surrounded it, today just a few architectural elements remain including the ruins of its castle. Labeled "Village of character" since 2020. Remains of a squared structure believed to date the end of the 12th century and for sure the 13th have been excavated. The buildings' construction reached at least two floors on a basalt foundation. The old village entrance was found through an opening in one of the ramparts. The stone columns and door hanger facing south was most likely used as for pedestrian access. Its other architectural delights and beauty can be found in the village's natural landscape which is why the area offers many outdoor activities including: rock climbing (it is the site of the department's rock climbing center and school); speleology, due its famous underground network, one of the deepest in the region; its many hiking trails and equestrian centers. Villages and Cities of Character is an official label, issued by the Departmental Tourism Committee, with the aim of networking in its department all the municipalities with a remarkable architectural and landscape heritage with the aim of developing tourism.

This village was fortified at the Middle Ages during the 100 years war and some of its ramparts are still standing today. It is situated on the road leading to Alba at the border of where the black basalt columns and white limestone rock are found. This particularity creates a beautiful checkerboard effect throughout the village. The black basalt stones is why the town's saint is named, St. Jean the Black. The pathways of the village surrounding the church were once part of its fortification which have been referred to as early as 1137. The typical cobblestone roads and voulted archways at times have the old doors attached to them and are pointed out with a little plaque.

Romans Bridge It is an unusual heritage that awaits the visitor, the bridge being almost 50m from the current bed of the river! It is on the route of the Antonin romans way, and cross the river Auzon. Be very careful to preserve your stones by not going up on the bridge, which is very fragile today

The gîte opens onto a private terrace with garden furniture and barbecue. Beds made on arrival, towels and cleaning included. "Les Gîtes de Sylilanse" offer very nice services with swimming pool and jacuzzi in free access at no extra charge and a welcome basket offered to each tenant composed of local products.
