A highlight of the region and the starting point of your ride, Mont Saint-Aubert offers breathtaking views over the entire Scheldt valley and the historic city of Tournai. Once on the plains, small snaking roads lead you up the Scheldt and its RAVeL, a slow lane reserved for cyclists and pedestrians. On your route, admire Château du Quesnoy and take a refreshing break at La Maison de Léaucourt; it marshes and observation pontoons are also worth a visit. Starting at the Maison du Canal, you cycle alongside the historic Espierres Canal. This section is part of EuroVelo 5. You will soon reach the River Escaut and the long rows of poplar trees beside it. Former arms of the river which have turned into marshes appear now and again on your right. When you get to Pecq, the route continues along narrow and tranquil country roads. You finish the outing almost surrounded by wheat, sugar beet, maize and flax fields. L’église Saint-Léger se place dans la tradition du gothique tournaisien. Reconstruite au XVIe siècle en pierre de Tournai, elle conserve des traces de l’édifice gothique antérieur datant du XIIIe siècle. Incendiées en 1693, les parties supérieures du bâtiment sont réparées en briques. Les berceaux lambrissés font place à des plafonds et les toitures sont remplacées par une toiture unique. Entre 1987 et 1994, l’église connaît une grande campagne de restauration. Le bâtiment est composé d’une tour imposante, d’une nef avec bas-côtés de trois travées et d’un transept saillant. Le chœur à trois pans est annexé de deux sacristies des XVe et XVIIIe siècles. La tour carrée compte quatre niveaux marqués par des cordons. Ses angles sont renforcés de contreforts à clochetons octogonaux encadrant la flèche effilée de la tour. Remarquons la petite baie géminée, élément de remploi provenant peut-être de l’église du XIIIe siècle, ainsi que les vestiges de la façade occidentale situés de part et d’autre de la tour. L’intérieur abrite certains éléments de décoration des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, tels que les autels, stalles du chœur, lambris ainsi que les statues de la Vierge et de saint Léger. Le saint, traditionnellement symbolisé par le stylet (qui servit à lui crever les yeux), tient ici une tarière, outil typique de la région utilisé dans la fabrication des sabots. À noter également, la porte de la sacristie, couverte de clous qui, selon la tradition, ont été plantés par les malades espérant la guérison. Classement : 15 janvier 1936

  Saint-Amand church was built in Tournai stone in the 13th or 14th century. It was rebuilt in the 15th century, enlarged between 1772 and 1774, and restored in 1910 by C. Sonneville, who created the neo-Gothic façade. The church is made up of an entrance flanked by a circular stair turret and polygonal annexe. The nave has two bays, of which only the first has side aisles leading off. These side aisles were redeveloped in 1910 at the same time as the façade. The nave has six columns in Tournai stone. This is the oldest part of the church. The aisle has a 20th-century flat timber roof from. There is a double transept extending more to the west. The chancel with chevet with five walls is rib vaulted with brick segments. The ridges are softened by prismatic culs de lampe adorned with angels' heads. The chancel is adjoined to the south by a neo-Gothic sacristy. Noteworthy among the furnishing are the funeral slabs, stained glass windows and baptismal fonts. Listed (14-09-1934)  

  The church of Saint-Vaast d’Évregnies was built mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Gothic Brabançon and Scaldian building (alternating between brick and stone) also features two Romanesque walls from the 11th century. Burnt down in 1693 during the wars of the League of Augsburg, the church lost its barrel vault panelling, as well as the gables above the south side aisle. A little restoration has enabled the building to retain its disparate character.   The tower on the façade only juts out a little and rests on two quatrefoil columns rising from the nave. Built from Tournai stone and brick, the tower consists of five levels marked by dripstone cordons. There is a Gothic arched doorway with softened archivolt, a high window beneath an archivolt and finally geminated sound holes with chamfered profile and archivolt. The tower is topped by a furred pyramidal spire and is flanked to the north by a polygonal stair turret. The Romanesque nave has Gothic windows. It has four bays and is flanked by a side aisle and chapel to the south. The side aisle, with a barrel vault ceiling, is below an asymmetrical bâtière roof. The chapel, dedicated to St Vaast, has a furred bâtière roof. The Gothic chancel ends in an apse with five walls and five high windows. It has a vaulted ceiling with stone ridges descending to prismatic culs-de-lampe and is flanked by an annexe and sacristy in brick. Listed (15-09-1936)  

The Mont Saint-Aubert is also called Mont de la Trinité because of the pilgrimages of the same name that first occurred in the 14th century. Seen from the motorway this isolated hill is like a lighthouse rising from the sea. A narrow winding road lined with magnificent houses takes you to the top. But don't be mistaken: even though Mont Saint-Aubert is mainly known as a recreation site, agriculture is still very much present here.
