This very difficult loop (black), in the heart of the Vézère valley in Périgord Noir, proposes to discover mainly the village of Rouffignac-St Cernin close to the hundred mammoths cave, then Tursac with the sites of the Madeleine and the Maison Forte of Reignac, the village of Peyzac Le Moustier with the troglodytic site of the Roque St Christophe and finally the village of Plazac with its beautiful point of view. The departure is from the sports complex (ESES). At the starting point, there is a bicycle rental and repair service, a bicycle washing station, toilets, restaurants and overnight accommodation.

The church, dating from the 12th century, is first mentioned in 1169. In 1187, Pope Urbain III took under his protection the church of Plazac, included in the domains belonging to the bishop of Périgueux. It was the bishops of Périgueux who built the castle to protect the church and the population.

The village of Plazac is situated between Les Eyzies and Montignac. Founded in the Middle Ages around a Romanesque church and fortified castle, as you walk around, you will discover a rich and diverse heritage: its Episcopal complex, its houses, its wash houses, fountains and pigeon lofts. With cultural diversity as its source of richness, Plazac is a village where more than 20 different nationalities rub shoulders!

After having walked through the alleys full of history in the village of Plazac, discover the medieval garden, at the foot of the magnificent 12th century Château des Evêques. Through hard work, passionate volunteers have given life to this beautiful place which is one of the prides of our village. It was awarded the prize for the most beautiful community garden in 2017 in the Departmental Competition of Flowered Towns and Villages.

The charming village of Fleurac, situated on a hill, was originally the domain of a Gallo-Roman landowner called Fleurus. In the centre of the village, you will find a church known as the Church of the Templars, dating from the 12th and 15th centuries. Its fortified bell tower was rebuilt in the 19th century, and it has a defensive wall over the pulpit. There is still a square tower that forms the sanctuary today. This small commune also has several chateaux: - Château Malbec (16th and 19th centuries) - Château Cluzeau (16th and 18th centuries) - Château Souffron (17th and 19th centuries) - Château Le Peuch (18th century) - Château de Fleurac (20th century) An historic reputation: In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Fleurac area produced a wine of excellent quality. After the phylloxera crisis around 1880, and with no classification, production ceased.

The church of St. Vincenta probably dates back to the X11th century in its oldest foundations The church has a very simple plan, with a nave followed by an apse dating back to the end of the 13th century. The south chapel was built in the 16th century and the north chapel in the 19th century, together with the adjacent sacristy. The bell tower-wall was rebuilt from the 14th to the 20th century.

The Church of Saint Germain de Paris, in Rouffignac, is the jewel of the village for two reasons: on the one hand, because of the beauty of the building, classified as a historical monument in 19002, and on the other hand, as the only survivor, with two adjoining houses, of the fire of 1944, because it bears witness to its ancestral heritage; it is one of the architectural treasures of the Vallée de l'Homme territory The Renaissance building, built in 1530 on a former Romanesque chapel, is characterised by its combination of Romanesque/Gothic styles, as illustrated by the façade and its remarkable portal. The Renaissance nave presents interior elevations of great homogeneity in their architectural treatment, and its particularity rests in particular on its pillars with engaged columns, decorated with twisted mouldings with sculpted grooves.

The fate of Rouffignac was to change on 31 March and 2 April 1944: in retaliation for the actions of the Maquis, the village was completely burnt down by Brehmer's Division, with the exception of the church and the three houses surrounding it; six victims, shot or killed in deportation, paid for these tragic days with their lives. Following these events and on the decision of General de Gaulle, the Cross of War 1939/45, with palms, was awarded to Rouffignac and presented on 11 November 1948 by General Duchet. To commemorate the memory of this dramatic episode in the history of Rouffignac, and the exactions of the bloody week of the Brehmer Division in the Périgord Noir, a "Memory Space" associated with the Tourist Office, was inaugurated on 31 March 2019.

The village of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin is a commune in the Barade forest located on the highest hills of the Périgord Noir in the Dordogne, surrounded by a diverse landscape offering wonderful scenery. In Rouffignac you can visit, before or after Lascaux, the Grotte de Rouffignac, also known as the cave of the hundred Mammoths, whose cave paintings can be dated to the final and middle Magdalenian period, i.e. 11,000 years before Christ. The architecture of the village of Rouffignac-Saint Cernin-de-Reilhac differs from that of the surrounding villages due to its tragic history during the Second World War. On 31 March 1944, the village of Rouffignac was all but destroyed by incendiary bombs. Only the church with its portal dating from 1530 and its flamboyant interior along with some neighbouring houses were spared. The village was entirely rebuilt from 1948 onwards.

From the Big Bang to the appearance of the dinosaurs and on to the first humans, Le Conquil explores the evolution of life. At the edge of the Vézère River, discover authentic rock shelters occupied by prehistoric man, which were built up and fortified in the Middle Ages and protected through the ages within this natural setting.
