Tour du Riable

Tour du Riable

With its rich heritage and picturesque farmland, the hike around Mount Riable offers a chance to immerse yourself in a stunning natural landscape. From the town hall, head toward Notre-Dame de Chalma. Follow the trail that winds along the edge of the fields behind the church. At the second intersection, turn sharply right onto the trail. Continue along the trail until you reach the pine forest, then begin the ascent up the mountain. Near the gorge, cross the narrow stream and climb the switchbacks to the pass.  From the pass, you can make a round trip to the Tour du Riable, which offers a superb panoramic view of the wild landscapes of the Méouge. Upon returning to the pass, begin the descent via the trail leading toward a farm below. When you reach a wider, rocky trail, leave the direction of Eourres and the GRP. Continue on the main trail and follow the yellow markings to the hamlet of Château. From the hamlet, head down to the left along the road that winds beneath the mountain for about 3 km, cutting through the gorge. Pass the hamlet of “Malaric,” and at the intersection, cross the bridge over the Auzance. Follow the D 201 to the left for 1 km. At the place called “l’Adret,” cross another similar bridge to the left, then immediately turn right onto the path that runs along the fields before rejoining the paved road. Continue on this path (Chemin des Iscles) to the crossroads. At the crossroads, marked by the “Le Canal” signpost, you’ll find Notre-Dame de Chalma on the left, or the Town Hall on the right.

Tour du Défens
7.1 km

Tour du Défens

The gentle climb through the woods on the north-facing slope is a pleasant walk thanks to the cool shade. At the summit, the panoramic view of the village of Eourres and the ridges is a wonderful reward. The south-facing slope offers a wonderful descent along the ridge. Across from City Hall, take the road to the left, cross the bridge, then turn left immediately (Chemin de la Pinié). After 300 m, the road becomes a dirt track and passes between two houses. Follow this path as it climbs gradually through the pine forest and winds around Mont Défens. At the first fork in the forest, continue on the main trail to the right. Do the same at the next intersection before a short steep climb.  Follow a large, hilly, fenced pasture on the left (horses). The path veers left, continues along the fence, and reaches a fork. Follow the trail on the right (Le Défens) and continue the climb through a lovely beech forest. At the intersection, head up to the right, skirt a clear-cut area, and reach the ridge of Le Défens (an area currently undergoing reforestation). Descend the south-facing slope, continuing along a lovely little path winding through an oak grove. This path traces a beautiful downward traverse beneath the Défens mountain to reach the valley floor. Stay alert and carefully follow the trail markers and cairns as you cross the heathland dotted with broom and wild lavender; otherwise, the path is easy to lose. Once you reach the bottom, cross the road and continue on the trail directly across. It quickly turns left and, 50 meters further on, joins the path you should take to the right to reach the few houses in sight. Walk down the road to the junction with the D 201. Take the footbridge across the street, then turn right immediately to return to Lachau along the left bank of the river. Continue on the road ahead, then, at the “Le Canal” sign, turn right to return to the starting point at the town hall.

Le Pied du Mulet
8.6 km

Le Pied du Mulet

A pleasant hike through pastures and unspoiled nature. With its hoof-like shape, the Pied du Mulet—the highest peak in the Méouge region—offers panoramic views of the Ecrins, the Luberon, and Mont Ventoux. From the parking lot, head up to the village along the trail on the right. Cross Eourres via the main street on the left, passing by the “village sign” and the fountain... As you leave the village, leave the small road and take the path on the right (“Col de Verdun, Saint-Vincent”). Go around the last house via a narrow path on the left. Continue above it along a path that is often steep and rocky. At a water intake, climb left for about 1 km along a path between the rocks. After a short descent, cross a ford, go around a large rock, and climb left along a steady, gently sloping path to the “Col de Verdun” signpost (1,316 m). Climb to the right toward the Pied du Mulet along a faint trail through broom and then boxwood. The trail turns right and, after a steep rocky section, emerges above the cliff onto a sloping grassy area. Cross it and head due west (follow the markers closely) to reach a small hillock (1,459 m; panoramic view of Lure and the Jabron Valley). Follow the ridge, cross a first small valley (cairn), continue straight up (follow the markers closely) to reach, on the ridge (1,495 m), a second small valley (post). You can reach the summit of the Pied du Mulet mountain (1,537 m) by crossing the pasture. Head down the valley to the right to find a better-marked trail in the shade of the beech trees. Follow the edge of the forest for about 500 m, then take a narrow path to the left that leads to a trail a little further down (1,272 m). Head left and continue on flat ground for about 700 m, then cross the pasture to the right (be sure to follow the trail markers). Descend two successive hills, then turn right (sign for “Eourres”) and continue downhill through this eroded valley (crossing a few scree slopes). After a flat section, descend to the left and cross the Gros Ruisseau (which is far from impressive in summer). Follow it for about 100 meters, then head back up to the village via the trail on the right along the edge of the gardens. Follow the ascent route back to the parking lot.

Mare Mountain tour

Mare Mountain tour

This circuit is divided in two key steps: the beginning is a long and steady rise with no particular difficulties and some various atmosphere: undergrowth ways, clearings ones… Once on the ridge, the trail is a lot more athletic but offers a breathtaking panoramic view on Méouge and Lure valleys. Back in 1975, Eourres village was nearly abandoned. Buildings were renovated by today’s new inhabitants whose were looking for a better quality of life. The village activities are mainly based on agriculture, biology and tourism. A specific connection can be felt in this isolated village as the messages on the information board at the village entrance tell. (Carshare, birthday’s notes, varie services,) You can park your car at the village entrance and hike up the path on your right. This path leads to the village information board. Pass by the fountain and take the 2nd path on your left near the « Montagne de Mare, Col St-Pierre par la Sapie » signpost. Start onto a small path going through pastures. Go on the path leading to Mare Mountain and ignore the path on your left going down to the Damias. The path crosses pastures and follow it until St Pierre pass. A faster but more athletic variant trail exists by taking the path on your right heading to Mare Mountain. Straight forward, cross two clearings (1363 meters). They are located at the end of a small valley. When the second clearing crossed, take the undergrowth way on your right. Here, you can enjoy the beeches forest coolness. In a small clearing near a ridge, go on your right on the hiking up way. Go to the end of the clearing (1403 meters) and take another path on your right, ignoring a wide way on the right. At the end of the way, take the path going down to a cairn (1420 meters). When you reach Alpine grasses, keep looking for a signpost on the left ridge. Go to it by crossing the slope. From here, starts the most athletic part. At the signpost, hike up and follow the ridge on your right. The rise is quite tough, but it is worth the effort if you want to see a stunning view. Go along the fence leading to the summit. At the signpost, do not follow Eourres way back but continue to follow the fence. Still follow the fence on your left a few meters before the summit. The path goes down a stiff slope until the pass. At the pass, go down straight forward on the ridge. At the signpost near a huge rock (1502 meters), go down on your right. The steep paths lead to Verdun pass. At the markings ways junction, turn right towards Eourres. The path slightly goes down and becomes more and more craggy. At Verdun pass (1314 meters), braves ones can hike up to « Pied du Mulet » and then go down to Eourres by old tracks. Otherwise, you also can cross the ford on your right (1201 meters) and go down to the village.
