Camping Les 2 Glaciers: Discover Le Monêtier-les-Bains

This pleasant family walk featuers a wide range of mountain landscapes.From the car park at the edge of the village of Le Casset, near the Park Information Centre, walk up the main village street and then turn left across the second bridge over the Guisane. A straight track runs alongside the Petit Tabuc torrent, gradually leaving the hay meadows and entering the woods. Beyond the Clot du Gué barrier and bridge, a regular climb through the larch forest leads first of all to the Grand Pré clearing (1,683 m), then La Douche lake (1,901 m). Come back the same way.

This is where you will leave the GR 54 to go over the frontal moraine of the Arsine glacier. From this ledge created by the movement of the glaciers, two large lakes mark the end of the route (2455 m). The Arsine glacial cirque is overlooked by majestic summits: you will marvel at Les Agneaux and the Neige Cordier Peak. Return by the same route.

Along the River Guisane, between fields and forests, an age-old, often shaded path makes its way from village to village.From the car park, go up the main village street, passing the church and the windmill, and continue along Rue du Lauzet. Then turn left after the Rebanchon gîte to cross the torrent. Turn right just after the bridge and then follow the yellow panels. The path goes around the foot of the Fontenil valley, near the village of the same name, before crossing Les Boussardes. From there, the rest of the trail is on the local tarmac road, leading you to the heart of the valley’s highest village. You follow the same route on the way back.

A blue veil has been lost in this mineral world.You will not find an  oasis in this desert of stones but a deep lake of freezing water. The unique marked trail starts from the carpark at the edge of  Guisane. It goes up on the right bank, with a regular ascent to Pré Chausson then through  Fontenil valley.  After a slightly more difficult section, the lake is hiding under an overhang in the bottom of the valley. Return using the same itinerary in the opposite direction. 

A short stroll from Fontcouverte, the Fontcouverte waterfall is a must-see in the upper Clarée valley, ideal for a family picnic or after a hike. Accessible to all ages. The Fontcouverte waterfall walk can be done from different starting points, depending on your level and desired walking time. Here, the shortest route is directly from the hamlet of Fontcouverte: Park in the Fontcouverte parking lot (opposite the campsite), then head for the Auberge de la Fruitière. Just in front of it, a sign points to the waterfall: take the small path on the left, which descends slightly along the river to the waterfall, just 300m away.

Lac Laramon is one of the jewels in the crown of the Hautes Alpes. Easy to access, it's a must-do if you want to discover the Clarée with your family. After a stop at the Ricou refuge, a panoramic view of the Cerces and Queyrellin ranges will reward your efforts. From the Fontcouverte parking lot, reach the footbridge opposite the Auberge de la Fruitière. The route starts just after the footbridge, indicated by the signs for Lac Laramon, Lac du Serpent and Refuge Ricou. This wide, stony path, with its moderately steep, constant gradient, takes you straight up to the Ricou refuge. After a first stop at the refuge Ricou, the surrounding panorama is already spectacular: the Cerces and Queyrellin massifs opposite give an impression of immensity. Just above the refuge, leave the track and take the well-marked path on the right. This gradually twists and turns for 15 minutes or so, until it comes to a crossroads where several itineraries meet: ignore the paths on either side and continue climbing straight ahead. The path quickly joins the torrent of Lac Laramon up to its spillway, where the full extent of the lake finally comes into view. Perched at an altitude of 2359 metres, this jewel of the Hautes Alpes allows you to appreciate the full beauty of the valley, and behind the Queyrellin massif, part of the Dôme des Écrins begins to come into view. The return journey takes the same route. You can continue your ascent towards Lac du Serpent (+ 40 min / + 100 m ascent) and even Pic du Lac Blanc.

Situated just below the Col du Chardonnet, this small lake takes its name from the old graphite mines, the remains of which can still be seen in the surrounding area. A hike that will take you through the magnificent Chardonnet valley. Park at the Fontcouverte parking lot, opposite the campsite of the same name. Enter the campsite and take the footpath on the left, signposted Refuge du Chardonnet. The path, which is a GR (long-distance footpath), winds through a larch forest to reach the Laraux chalets, which continue to the right and take you to the Chardonnet refuge. From the refuge, continue to the torrent de Raisin, (once you've reached the torrent, you have two options: by going left, you can reach the Col du Raisin, at an altitude almost similar to that of the Col du Chardonnet). Cross a small bridge to take the GR 57 (red and white markings). The path leads into a combe, which you climb up to reach a flat area. The path leads to the magnificent Chardonnet alpine marsh. You'll find the remains of power poles that will lead you to the Col du Chardonnet via the GR 57. 200 meters before the pass, the Lac de la Mine can be seen below. Continue up to the pass, then just before you reach it, turn right onto the narrow path overlooking Lac de la Mine, which leads to the remains of the old Chardonnet mines. Please note: The old Chardonnet mines are not secure. Do not enter the site.

Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. Véronique and Jérôme FOUVET were beekeepers for nearly 15 years. Since 2021, they have concentrated exclusively on making honey-based products. They have created and developed a number of gourmet honey-based recipes, as well as establishing a range of beauty products. "We started beekeeping in 2007 and over the years have created and developed a number of recipes. Our specialities include pure honey gingerbread and energy bars for hikers. We also collect the propalis from the hives to make an alcoholate and a mosturizing cream. In addition, Veronique has now started making soap from olive oil enhanced with honey, propolis and beeswax. We really enjoy converting what the hive offers us into our own produce." At the foot of the Lautaret Mountain pass, under the summits and glaciers, the Pays de la Meije Nordic Area is a magic spot surrounded by majestic and wild beauty. In this haven of peace the groves of trees give shelter to many wild animals. The site is at the gates of the Ecrins National Park, in a beautiful corner of the Hautes Alpes region. You will evolve in an unspoilt environment that encourages contemplation, under the watchful eye of chamois, deer and snow hares. The area is ideal for nordic sking and snowshoeing. The trails are relatively flat, going through the woods and the valley bottom, except for the ones that cross the Arsine hamlet. Cross-country skiing: 10 km of trails, three loops with with diverse but fairly easy profiles. Nordic Walking: Villar d'Arène - La Gravière (8 km) Snowshoeing: Tour of the hamlets of Villar d'Arène (11 km) Sledging: one hill at Arsine and one at the Jouvencelles, opposite Villar d'Arène Natural ice skating rink: free access, ice skate rental posssible at the gîte le Pas de l'Ane. Ski hockey: hockey equipment (bring your skis) at your disposal at the Nordic Chalet every weekend and Wednesday outside school holidays and all mornings during the french school holidays. Relaxation area: deck chairs and a spyglass enables you to enjoy the sun and observe the wildlife from a terrace next to the Nordic Chalet. Adèle Planchard bequeathed her fortune to build the refuge along the Grande Ruine ascent route. Despite its "high mountain" setting, the long walk to the top is simple and superb, accessible to almost any hiker! The refuge is the second highest perched in the Ecrins massif. Located in the Massif des Ecrins, Groupe de la Grande Ruine in the Briançonnais, this refuge is a lookout point over the Barre des Ecrins. When you arrive, you'll discover the world of high mountains. From the refuge, you'll have a beautiful view of the succession of Pic de Neige Cordier peaks, all the way to La Roche Méane at 3765 m (Pointe Breevort). Access from the foot of the Col (5h) on a signposted path. No technical equipment required in summer. In spring, the refuge is also kept for the ski touring season, as the first stage of the Tour de la Meije, or for the ascent of the Grande Ruine!

At the edge of the Ecrins National Park, the Serre Chevalier ski resort extends over several towns and villages on the right bank of the Guisane, from Monêtier-les-Bains to Briançon. Founded in 1941 with the Chantemerle cable car, it has the biggest ski area in the southern Alps with 61 ski lifts on all levels from an altitude of 1,200 m to 2,830 m to Pic de l'Yret (Le Monêtier-les-Bains). The resort’s logo is an eagle, in reference to Baron Borel du Bez, Briançon’s representative in 1792 at the Legislative Assembly, which ruled France between 1792 and 1795, during the French Revolution. Le Bez is a hamlet in Villeneuve that was united with the Chantemerle ski resort in the 1970s.

Visits to the church are organised by the Tourist Office all summer.

The church is listed as a Historic Monument and is placed under the protection of Saint Claude. In its present condition, it dates from the 18th century. The previous building was constructed prior to the 16th century. Inside, the eye is immediately attracted by the choir ogives, creating an intimate atmosphere, particularly since the unusually large spire does not suggest an interior of such a small size. The choir was rebuilt in 1716-1717, probably after the previous chapel burnt down. Traces from this period can be seen on the keystone. The wrought-iron choir gate has the inscription "HM 1717", a date that can also be seen in the apse, on the wrought iron railing of the impost of the axial window, and on the baptismal font.

The wrought-iron choir gate has the inscription "HM 1717", a date that can also be seen in the apse, on the wrought iron railing of the impost of the axial window, and on the baptismal font.

At the entrance to the valley, Le Casset is a stone shell village surrounded by farming landscapes. Its name comes from the verb 'cassare' ('to break, to shatter' in late Latin), describing a place covered with stones. In fact there are many such villages in this mountain valley carved out by a vast glacier. Le Casset, on the left bank of the Guisane, is sheltered from avalanches beneath the watchful eye of the prestigious summits and glaciers that “move” in a different time scale from our own.

As you walk through the village of Lauzet, you will see recently made sundials made in traditional style. Easy to see from the main village streets, they adorn the beautifully restored facades of the old houses.

As you stroll through the streets of Le Casset, some house doors will attract your notice, as they bring together most of the decorative elements of the facades. Made of larch wood, they have been moulded or sculpted with geometric or floral patterns and have a tympanum above them, often with a grating. Behind the door is the courtyard, the shared entrance for people and animals. The way people lived and organised their homes resulted in this single entrance, an area giving access both to the stable and to the living quarters. Between the world inside and outside, the courtyard provided a passageway, insulation, but also storage space.

The rock sparrow is here at the north-western limit and highest altitude of its home territory and regularly nests in the area. The species is in decline nationally and is on the endangered ‘red’ list in Rhône-Alpes and is being studied in the PACA region. People sometimes pay little attention to house sparrows since they are so familiar, which is a pity. The rock sparrow is bigger and although its plumage is similar to a female house sparrow’s, its call sets it apart at once: pi-yip or pi-yui or even a chay sound that is similar to a brambling’s!

Restaurant of typical high mountain pasture, located in Fontcouverte, a hamlet +1860m. Formerly a place where cheese was made, the Fruitière now operates as a restaurant, and is an unmissable stop in the higher Clarée valley. Anything from snacks to real meals, you will find housecooked, local food and moutain specialties. Open everyday in wintertime, summertime and All Saints' Day holidays. Booking in advance is recommanded for lunches, and necessary for dinners (dinners only in summertime). Access in wintertime is only on foot/snowshoe, or ski. 1h30 from Névache Ville-Haute. Located in the magnificent Clarée valley in the Hautes-Alpes, the completely rebuilt Laval refuge offers a warm and comfortable welcome. Meije & Thomas, the janitors, and their team welcome you to the cosy atmosphere of the wooden chalet-style refuge. Winter access is by ski touring, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or skating. Leave your car at the Ville Haute parking lot in Névache and take the summer road, which is closed at this time of year, or drive along the right bank of the Clarée for a more bucolic atmosphere. The refuges are often perceived as inaccessible and reserved for a more seasoned clientele, but the Laval refuge is an exception to the rule. In summer, you can come either by car to the parking lot of the same name some 300 m upstream from the refuge, or by shuttle bus, depending on the time of day and the season: Accueil Tourisme Névache. On the first floor, two small dormitories with single and double beds for 4 people, and two dormitories for 7 and 8 people with single or double beds equipped with sheets and comforters (bring your own sheets and comforter bags). On the first floor, sanitary facilities and hot showers (bring your own toiletries). In the dining room, which seats between 36 and 40, a beautiful Masse (Tulikivi) stove radiates a gentle warmth that you'll appreciate whatever the weather! To provide mountaineers with a little more comfort, refuges gradually replaced the early bivouacs and shelters. Thus, the Tuckett refuge, built in 1886, superseded the rock shelter still visible nearby. It was replaced in 1948 by the Refuge du Glacier Blanc and later converted into a museum. The existing Refuge des Écrins, standing at the top of the glacier, was built in 1968. It replaced the Refuge Caron which had been built in 1922, itself replacing an initial 1903 Caron shelter.

The refuge is an ancient witness to the pioneering days of mountaineering in Vallouise in the second half of the 19th century... At that time it was situated at the foot of the glacier. It was built in 1886 to provide shelter under the rock for the first mountaineers. With its small dimensions, and materials of stone and wood, it represents a historical reference. Its remains shelter an exhibition retracing its history.

Located on the Alpe plan at 2106m, at the foot of the glaciers and at the gateway to the Ecrins National Park, this superb chalet-refuge will open its doors to you for a stay in the heart of nature; a beautiful escape in the heart of the mountains, to recharge your batteries and recharge your batteries as a family. This comfortable, small-capacity refuge welcomes you for a night or more, for a sporting or contemplative stay (or both) in a magnificent, peaceful setting, far from the wifi, stress and hassle of life down below! Located in the heart of the alpine pastures, the Alpe refuge welcomes young and old alike, for a day hike, a first night in a refuge, a stopover on the GR54 or on the way to another refuge. For mountaineering and ski touring: it's THE spot par excellence! With a superb view of the summit of Les Agneaux, access is by a very easy family hike; despite a few steep sections, it takes you back to the source of the Romanche and allows you to enjoy a very pleasant break on the banks of this pretty torrent. "A small stream, a few boulders, grassy slopes and the whole space to run and laugh at life. Not far away, the chickens peck at grass and insects, and a few yards away, from his pen, the pack donkey observes the scene with his gentle eyes, here it's a bit of Paradise", the janitors tell us. Children can run, climb, roll in the grass... Freedom is theirs! It's also the starting point for mountain hikes to various summits (Agneaux, Neige Cordier, Chamoissière, la Pyramide...). The Alpe refuge is situated at the intersection of two heavily frequented valleys making it a key stage for discovering this sector of the Massif des Ecrins. The GR 54 links it, by the Arsine mountain pass, to the valley of the Guisane. From here it is possible to reach the Pavé and the Adèle Planchard refuges... Above the refuge, the high mountains begin. The ice cap of the Agneaux, by the North West slope, and the crossing by the Neige Cordier peak to go back down to the Blanc glacier are two classic snow climbs.

Ski instructors and mountain guides Anne & Boris welcome you at the bottom of the Clarée valley. The refuge is ideally located in an area rich in lakes, at the start of a wide variety of itineraries. Friendly and comfortable: The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The refuge team welcomes you for a night, a stay, a meal or a snack. There are also hot showers and a place to dry your shoes. The refuge belongs to the FFCAM. We can accommodate 64 people in dormitories of 4, 6 and 8 places. Behind the name of the refuge hides an old story. Madame Adèle Planchard, one of the first mountaineers, she died in 1925, bequeathing a large amount of money to the Dauphinois Tourist Society (STD) for the construction of a refuge. The French Touring Club financed the opening of the track; with the transport of materials being carried out on the back of mules, with the help of soldiers based at Briançon and the valley guides... The first winter in1926 destroyed all the work carried during the summer. On the 7th August 1927, thanks to their strength of courage and self-sacrifice these men offered future generations the privilege of being able to open the door of the Adèle Planchard refuge on the North face of the Roche Faurio. A new refuge was inaugurated in 1984 and is in place beside the original one.
