Throughout medieval Occitania, the romieu, or romiu (sometimes francised as "roumieu"), is the pilgrim: both the one who goes to Rome and the one who takes the same paths but heads west, walking towards Santiago de Compostela. Between Azille and Carcassonne, a rare occurrence, the trace of these pilgrimages has been inscribed in the toponymy: an old path still bears the name of camin romieu. Towns crossed : Carcassonne, Villemoustaussou, Villalier, Villedubert, Bouilhonnac, Malves-en-Minervois, Laure-Minervois, Aigues-Vives, Saint-Frichoux, Peyriac-Minervois, Rieux-Minervois, Azille, Pépieux Signs : Red and white Itinéraire : * WARNING: This is a global description of the part from Azille to Carcassonne. For more details on this trail, the purchase of the IGN map or the guidebook is recommended. Passing by the lake of Jouarres and the village of Azille, reach Rieux Minervois and discover its heptagonal church and its sculptures by the Master of Cabestany as well as the statue of St Jacques, on the way to Compostela (pilgrim accommodation). From Azille to Peyriac-Minervois, the path follows the old railway line from Moux to Caunes-Minervois, which is now a shaded greenway. Once in Peyriac-Minervois, it bends southwards to reach Saint-Frichoux, a village on a small hill overlooking the depression of the Marseillette's swampland. From there, the path heads west again, towards Malves-en-Minervois (pilgrim accommodation) to Carcassonne along the canal du Midi  (shared route with the GR36.) You can then carry on the chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle (Way of St. James) to Fanjeaux, Mirepoix etc...

A family walk along the Canal du Midi Signs: Yellow markings Start from the Port. In front of the canal, turn left to take the passage of the tree nurseries (direction North), then cross the RD 11 and the cemetery parking lot. Climb the embankment and go along the cemetery wall (direction North). At the path, turn left and go down along the cemetery, then turn right onto a path lined with many olive trees (direction East). In front of the canal, turn left and cross the bridge over the Argent-Double river, "Le Passelis". Follow the towpath. You will pass in front of "La Dinée", currently the operation centre of the Voies Navigables de France (Navigable Waterways of France), then in front of the "Drain de La Dinée" or aqueduct, on the left, which collects by drainage the waters of the plain of Azille. Pass over the stone bridge of the Canal du Midi, on the right (direction South). Go towards the “Métairie (farmhouse) du Bois”, which is bypassed on the left. You will soon pass the old (dilapidated) lavoir of the Métairie. Then take the path on the right just before the small lake (trout fishing). Go along the Argent-Double river and cross the "Petit Bois" which is much appreciated for its shade in the summer. Cross the river on a small bridge. We arrive in front of the Epanchoir. Climb up to the Epanchoir and cross it. Pass under the bridge of the RD 11 and continue along the canal until the next bridge (road of Puichéric), turn right to cross the bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn left into a small passageway that goes down towards the port.

The old "Moux/Caunes-Minervois" railway line has been converted into a hiking trail between Puichéric and Caunes Minervois linking six villages from the plain to the foothills.It is a transverse axis that provides access to other hiking loops. Signs: Yellow and Green markings (white background) Start at the foot of the church in front of the Jardin de la Paix, where the sign indicating the “Chemin vert” line connecting Puichéric to Caunes-Minervois is located.  Take the street named "L. Pasteur" up to the roundabout in front of the town hall (former train station). Take the 5th street on the right and go past the municipal buildings to join the old railway line. Cross the iron bridge over the Canal du Midi and carry on along the paved road for about 1.5km/0.9mi and then on a tarred road to the village of La Redorte. At the entrance of the village, turn right onto the D72. Before the bridge, on the right-hand side, go down the small pedestrian crossing then go under the bridge and cross the Port de la Fabrique until you see the Chemin Vert information panel. Continue on Avenue du Port, turn right just before the iron bridge on the Roman road. At the crossroads with the D11, turn left and 30m/100ft further on turn right onto the old railway line. Then turn left on avenue Jean Jaurès, go past the community centre and continue until you reach the Place de l'Eglise. Turn right on avenue du Languedoc for about 150m/500ft and opposite the entrance to the underpass of the Château de La Redorte, turn right via the alley of plane trees and cross the Saint-Georges bridge over the river "l'Argent Double". Just after the demolished bridge, turn left to go alongside and take the old railway line. At the junction with the D72, turn right for 200m/650ft until the crossroads. Turn left for about 250m/820ft (on the left there is the old Azille train station). At the junction with the rue de la Restanque, go past the Chemin Vert information panel and continue upwards. While following the signs, at the crossroads turn left in the direction of the Place aux Herbes. Cross it, continue on rue du Commerce and immediately on the right, take rue de la Poste. Arriving on the Allées Pol Lapeyre, turn left and continue your walk on the Allées de la République until you reach the Place César Franck (famous composer). Turn right and walk down the rue du Théron and just before the demolished bridge, go up the embankment on the right to find the old railway. At the crossroads with the tarred road, continue straight ahead in the direction of the D206 and cross it. Leave the château de Floris (private estate) on the left. Cross the iron bridge over the Canet stream and enjoy this section of the trail, surrounded by pine trees and vines. At the concrete path, turn right, go up for 100m/320ft then turn left , and continue on the path until you reach the intersection with a small tarred road. The markings will take you over the small culvert to the Chapelle du Bout du Pont and the information panel of the Chemin Vert de Rieux-Minervois. Cross the bridge over the Argent-Double river, go straight ahead on rue Notre-Dame. Turn left on rue du Barry (ramparts on the left) then right up rue Saint Blaise (on the right the Saint Blaise tower). Go past the Tourist Information Center and the Sainte-Marie heptagonal church. In front of the town hall, on the left place du Général Bousquet then on the right on avenue Louis Cros D11. At the post office, go into the rue du Château and opposite the school, take the rue du Moulin towards the boulodrome (boules/pétanque sports ground). Continue straight ahead, go along the distillery and continue in the direction of the village of Peyriac-Minervois where you will find the Chemin Vert information panel at the entrance. Continue straight ahead, rue de la porte rouge and at the crossroads, turn right and go down rue des Tonneliers until you reach Place de la Libération. Continue on the borders of the river "l' Argent Double". At the crossroads, take the rue des Mauves opposite and then the chemin des Prades. Next intersection, turn left for 200m/650ft then right. At the end of the tarmac road, in the middle of the vineyards, take the dirt track on your left and leave the private estate of Pautard on your right. Arriving on an olive tree alley, turn left towards the water tower, then straight ahead and leave the hamlet Tinal d'Abrens (commune of Laure-Minervois) on your left. Continue the hike until you reach the old railway line. At the level of the culvert, take the dirt track on the right along a tree hedge. Once you have passed the recycling centre, go into the pine alley. Cross the D115 and continue straight ahead on the old railway line in the direction of Caunes-Minervois. In the trading estate, join the D115, turn left for about 300m/985ft and you will arrive at the old railway station at the end of the Chemin Vert.

A hike suitable for both families and experienced hikers.  Trail markers: yellow + red “M” logo  Park in front of the cooperative winery, then walk to the starting point by following the trail markers. Take Rue Marcellin Albert toward the village. At the bend, turn right onto Rue Nationale, then immediately left onto Rue des Remparts. Continue to Place Neuve, then turn right and pass under the stone archway to reach the trailhead.  Start and finish: Place de la Tour de Trencavel. Take the small street heading north, following the yellow markings with a red “M.” Pass Place Vieille, then take the small Rue Saint-Martin and turn right onto Rue de la Pompe. At the intersection, turn right again.  At the next intersection, turn left this time. At the Y-shaped intersection, turn left again (heading north). Further on, following the trail markers, cross the Canet stream (which may be dry) and pass by a house on the right (the former Paulignan sheepfold).  Continue straight ahead, and 400 meters further on, at a trail junction, turn left uphill (north).  On this climb, look for the dolmen “Les allées couvertes de Jappeloup” on the right side of the trail.  Arrive at the Saint Roch Chapel and its water source. A lime kiln is located 100 meters above, on the right (private property). Continue toward Trausse-Minervois. At the intersection with the cross, take the path straight ahead (south), then turn left onto Rue Saint Roch and left again onto Place Vieille to return to Place de la Tour de Trencavel. 

Montée vers les sous bois et la piste forestiere. Signs : Yellow and Sheep pictogram From the parking lot along the river, first admire the marble sculptures, then immediately turn right up "Rue des Ecoles" and then "Avenue Jean Jaurès" towards Carcassonne. Before the petrol station, turn right onto "rue du Château d'Eau" and go up towards the water tank. Continue on the forest track and as you go up, much higher up and to the right, there is a dry stone enclosure and some huts and an ancient marble quarry. Go up to Villegause, on the right an old sheepfold dominates the landscape. Just after, leave the track and take a path on the right through a nice oak wood. Arriving on a promontory, a panoramic view awaits you: below , the Argent-Double river flows peacefully and just in front of you stands proudly the "Roc de Moussu" (539 m). To the left, you will see the hamlet of Montbonous and to the right the village of Caunes-Minervois. Carry on downhill, crossing the stream of "Plô de la Bonnette" and then, further down, the stream of "Combe du Roudet".  Once on the track, turn right towards "Bibaud". Go over the bridge, cross the D 620 and go up the hill. At the crossroads, turn right and follow the signs for Caunes-Minervois. When you arrive in the village, cross the D115 and take the street "Plô de la Sal" opposite. The signs will lead you back to the Europe parking lot through the pretty little streets of this medieval village.

You will find marble all along the circuit leading to the” Carrière du Roy” or kings quarry from where the columns of the Trianon were extracted. Very beautiful panorama on the Pyrenees on a clear day. Plunging view on the Argent-Double river and the Cros. Signs: Yellow markings topped with 3 yellow squares Departure from the parking lot "esplanade de l'Europe", go up the ramp that leads to the avenue de l'Argent Double, cross the bridge and go up the avenue du Minervois. After the lavoir, turn left on chemin du Cros, follow for about 800m/2625ft. (You can also join this point by walking throught the picturesque village streets). At the top of the road, on the right side of the hill, there is a calvary surmounted by an iron cross. Turn left onto the path joining the service road called "Allée des Carrières". Turn right and continue in the direction of the parking lot of the Carrière du Roy then continue straight ahead following the signs. There, a small undergrowth path leads to the edge of the historic quarry where the majestic columns come from. At the bottom of the stairs, turn left towards Caunes-Minervois and Citou in the direction of a small hill in the shade of the vegetation, very appreciable in summer. At the Capitelle, on the left, go down the track to enjoy the exceptional view of the Aude valley. Turn right at the parking lot, then after 150m/490ft, at the level of the sculpture "La Pétale", turn left. Take the same path going down towards the Calvary and begin the return journey towards the village of Caunes-Minervois.

Signs: Yellow markings + orange M From the carpark along the river, go up the ramp that leads to the avenue de l'Argent-Double, cross the bridge and go up the avenue du Minervois to the wash house. Just after the wash house, turn left onto Chemin Vieux du Cros. When you arrive at the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Cros, take the path on the right as you go down, in the direction of "La Boriette". At this point, go up on the left up to the pink marble quarry, pass in front of it, then in the undergrowth, a display will serve as a reference to turn on your left. Continue your walk and slowly start a descent that will require a little attention.  When you reach the bottom of the gorge, cross the "païchère" (small dam) and walk up the path. At the junction, facing the stairs, turn right to a capitelle (dry stone hut). Turn left on the forest track for about 200m. Outside the bend on your right, take the path going down on the Napoleon road. You will pass over small bridges, observe the parapet well. Ignore the lateral departures. Follow the signposts, which will bring you back to Caunes-Minervois at sight by accessing the village via the Rue de la Terralbe. Go down the Avenue du Minervois, cross the bridge and on your left, the parking lot of the "esplanade de l'Europe".

Across the vast territory of Laure-Minervois, the "capitelles" - dry-stone cabins - stand as testaments to the history and labor of rural life.  Trail Markings: yellow  Starting Point: With your back to City Hall. Turn left, then at the intersection, take Rue des Oliviers—this is where the trail markers begin. At the top of the housing development, turn right and head up toward the scrubland, where the first sign on the left points to the path leading to a small capitelle; above it, a larger one with a shelter leans against the fence. Pass through a grove of holm oaks and giant broom, turn left onto the cart path, then right to reach an old raised garden with a restored capitelle near a small chasm. Climb about ten stone steps and return to the scrubland. Turn right and follow the wall to the north. At the water tower, rejoin the old cart track and continue along the La Guinette municipal path.  Enter a pine forest heading toward Pech Majou Sud. As you climb, enjoy a beautiful view of the Romanesque bell tower of Saint Jacques d’Albas and the Château de Villarlong (pre-Romanesque chapel and Visigothic ruins).  Cross a remarkable cypress forest (20-meter-tall trees, to the right and left of a deep ravine). Above a small stream, climb about thirty steep steps to reach a flat area.  Head north, following the wall of upright stones (capitelle) bordering a vast pasture (carpeting with rockroses). To the east, there’s a beautiful view of the village, the Crapam, and the Alaric. Descend toward Pech Majou Nord (a small, restored "capitelle" with a door on the north side).  Reach a large square “capitelle” (arched with a dome, with splayed openings to the north and east) via a flight of twelve steps. On either side, a sloping wall has been built, with stones overlapping in a scale-like pattern. Take the “Carretal” (cart path) westward (a beautiful, straight 100-meter path lined with well-restored low walls). Turn right, follow the wall, and enjoy the panoramic view of Figuères. Go down toward Figuères, crossing a large pine forest toward Métairie Neuve.  You’ll reach a path; turn right toward Les Fontanilles, then descend to the stream and cross it. Pass through a grove of magnificent Aleppo pines and cade junipers to reach Rancoule (look for a square capitelle in a vineyard, near a sunken path). Follow the path that runs alongside the vineyards. There is a massive square capitelle on the left. You’ll reach the “enclos” of Pont de Canet (a wall of vertical or slanted stones). A square "capitelle" leans against the wall.  At the very bottom, just before the Calvary of the Cross of Saint Peter, take the small descending trail to the right. Walk alongside the olive groves and then a hedge of cypress trees. 

Looking for big thrills? Desire to surpass yourself? The via ferrata of Mazamet is for you! In the the Arnette gorges, in Mazame, via ferrata and giant zip line, under the footbridge. Acrobats and adventurers will enjoy this safe activity which completes, since 2022 the current tourist offer. This land is located in a protected natural site carried by an outstanding historic heritage (Cormouls-Houlès remarkabe gardens, St-Sauveur ruins, classified archeological site), and a rich and diverse wildlife. Nearby, after crossing the Mazamet's Hymalayan footbridge at 70 meters high over the Arnette river, you will find the medieval village of Hautpoul and its gardens, as well as, on the GR7, the House of Wood and Toy, its arboretum and its orchard. Nestled at an altitude of 520 meters between the plateau of the lakes and the Montagne Noire, Marican is the starting point of many footpaths.
