Camping de la Tour: adventures in Embrun, Hautes-Alpes

Make your way between the tumultuous Durance, and the tranquillity of the fields, under the benevolent gaze of the town of Embrun. From the car park, turn left towards the promenade on the banks of the Roc. From there, walk along the wall at the edge of the Roc. Go behind the handling and stadium, where you'll find a wooden footbridge. Cross the bridge, then at the end, take the track on the right at a place called "les Rochassons". Descend the path and rejoin the road. From here turn right at the side of the road. Head past the power station, then take the second road downhill towards the rugby stadium. After the stadium, follow the path. Once you reach the road, at the "chemin du stade" turn right towards "Chaffal d'en Bas", along the banks of the Durance. At "Le Chaffal d'en bas", take the road to the right and follow the canal towards La Ville. At the crossroads, near the fountain, go straight ahead and take the dirt track at "Le Chaffal 1" towards Les Moulineaux. Ascend as far as the car park. At the top, take the stairs leading up to the ramparts on the right. Walk past the hospital and continue along the street until you reach the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Réal d'Embrun, then the car park just behind it.

A real sporting challenge, this route is aimed at all cycling enthusiasts looking for a personal challenge. A tour of France's largest man-made lake has to be earned! From the station, head down towards Embrun town centre then, at the roundabout, turn right following the signs for "Hôpital -Urgences". Follow this avenue (Alexandre Didier) for 1 km and turn right at an imposing stone wall. Take the D9 towards Puy-Sanières and, after a short warm-up, things start to get serious with a 6km climb and an average gradient of 7%. This route offers beautiful views, while passing through wooded areas and grey marl landscapes. Finally pass Puy-Sanières and now head towards Réallon, still on the D9. The view is unobstructed and offers a lovely vantage point over the Ecrins massif. Fairy chimneys, torrents and marl follow one another in an environment where deciduous and coniferous trees mingle. Then head past Les Méans and, at the next junction, turn left towards Savines-le-Lac (D9). Pass Les Rousses and, at the roundabout, continue towards Chorges (D9) for a lovely, gentle descent to the village of Saint-Apollinaire. Take a short break at the lookout (great view of Lake Serre-Ponçon) before continuing on to Chorges (D9). Head downhill for 8 km, keeping an eye on your speed (it's easy to get carried away!) as far as the centre of Chorges and, when you come to a "no-go" sign, turn left towards Espinasses. Tackle the Col Lebraut (D3) with its 7km ascent and, at the summit, make a short stop to enjoy a panoramic view of the lake. Begin a new descent towards the Durance valley. You'll have to go through a tunnel, so you'll need lighting for visibility. Drive past the Serre-Ponçon dam, admiring the quality of its construction, reach a roundabout and follow the signs for Barcelonnette (D900b). Cross the Durance then turn right towards Selonnet (D900c). Enter the heart of the Gorges de la Blanche, a truly picturesque route nestled between the mountains. After 3km, turn left towards Les Eyrauds (C9) and take a small road. It climbs quite steeply to a pass, which offers some fine views. It descends through undergrowth until you reach the D900b. Turn right onto this departmental road. Go through the centre of La Bréole and rejoin the D900b. Shortly afterwards, climb towards the Col des Fillys (D7) for 2 km, then turn left towards Les Laphonds. Continue downhill towards the D900b (fire station) and turn right. The landscape opens up even more, with panoramic views of the Serre-Ponçon lake, the Ubaye and its mountainous terrain. After a lookout point, you have just 5 km to go before turning left towards Savines (D954). Continue down to the valley and cross the Ubaye river. Continue along this pleasant lakeside road then climb towards Le Sauze-du-Lac. The panorama is as splendid as ever. Continue on to Savines-le-Lac, still enjoying the beautiful views, then continue towards Briançon on the N94. At the village of Crots, turn right and take the narrow road that runs past the foot of the château of Picomtal. Climb up to Le Poêt, through a series of bends, then follow the signs for Baratier on a short descent. Take the D40 for a short stretch before turning right towards Crévoux. Walk for almost 3 km, then cross the Durance on a metal bridge (wooden floor) towards the citadel of Embrun. Finally, take the last ascent back to the starting point.

From the station, head down towards Embrun town centre then, at the roundabout, turn right following the signs for "Hôpital -Urgences". Pass Les Rousses and, at the roundabout, continue towards Chorges (D9) for a lovely, gentle descent to the village of Saint-Apollinaire. Take a short break at the lookout (great view of Lake Serre-Ponçon) before continuing on to Chorges (D9). Continue for 5 km and, shortly after passing under a power line, take a 180° turn towards Prunières (signposted for cyclists). Continue along this pleasant road down to the N94. Now turn right towards Briançon, staying as far to the right as possible (busy road at times). For the next 3 km, enjoy the panoramic views over the turquoise waters of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Finally, approach Savines bridge and turn left towards Puy-Sanières (D41). Pass under the railway line, join a roundabout and head once more towards Puy-Sanières (D641). The very last 7km climb allows you to fully appreciate the panorama all around you. Stick to this road until you reach the D9 at a crossroads. Finally, turn right and follow the same route to Embrun as on the outward journey. A lovely descent awaits you! Then it's back to where you started.

From one bank of the Durance to the other, this itinerary takes you on a tour of villages and hamlets. For the curious, they are home to a whole host of museums! From Embrun station, head down towards the town centre and, at the roundabout, go left towards Briançon. Continue straight on, passing the fire station and reaching a bend just before a large roundabout (shortly after passing under a railway bridge). Now head towards Châteauroux-les-Alpes along the D994h. Then cross this municipality and continue straight on until you reach the N94. Drive onto this lane, which can be fairly busy at times and, with caution, ride correctly on the right. After 4 km, enter Saint-Clément-sur-Durance. Cross the village and, after crossing the bridge over the Durance, turn right towards Saint-André d'Embrun. This is followed by some gentle ascents and descents along the banks of the Durance, taking in the beautiful views. You will also pass through several hamlets before reaching the foot of Saint-André d'Embrun. Continue straight on, staying on the D994d, towards Embrun. Continue for 4 km and, at the STOP sign, turn right and cross the Durance on a metal bridge (wooden floor) towards the citadel of Embrun. Finally, take the last ascent back to the starting point.

From one bank of the Durance to the other, this route takes in the most beautiful views around Embrun. From Embrun station, turn right and go over the railway line. Take the "Route de Caléyère", which rises very quickly. The climb lasts almost 5 km, before reaching the Château de Caléyère. Shortly afterwards, you can enjoy a moment's rest and a beautiful view of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the surrounding peaks and the various valleys. Continue on a small road then descend towards Embrun, after passing through the hamlets of Les Barthelons and Les Maures as well as other residential areas. Follow the railway line, cross it at the level crossing, then turn right. Continue for 600m before turning left and leaving the D994h. Stay on this road until you take a left fork, then immediately right to join the route de la digue. Go along the river veering right, with views over the citadel of Embrun. When you reach a footbridge, cross over the Durance. Follow the cycle path towards Baratier (short section under the N94) and head towards a roundabout. Take the third exit towards Les Orres (D40) and climb for 8 km before reaching an intersection. From here, take the tarmac lane that heads off to the right towards Le Pont (D540). Join the Mélézet and then a much wider departmental road (D40). Stay on this road going left, past a hairpin bend then downhill for 5 km. Slightly after the hamlet of Rabast (sign near a bus stop), at the start of a curve, keep your eyes peeled for a right turn towards Les Gaillards. Then head to the church of Saint-Sauveur for a short stop to admire the breathtaking panorama. Continue towards Crévoux for 4 km and join the D39 at a hairpin bend. Then head towards Saint-André-d'Embrun and, 1 km before the village (on the D139), choose the small route that climbs to the right towards Les Lagiers. Continue for 2 km until you come to a hairpin bend, then turn left onto the D994d. Follow the signs for Embrun for 4 km and turn right at the STOP sign. Cross the Durance on a metal bridge (wooden floor) towards the citadel of Embrun. Finally, take the last ascent back to the starting point.

Add a mountainous touch to this first stage with the Col du Parpaillon on the return journey From Embrun station, join the roundabout and take the first exit to join the pedestrian zone slightly to the left (towards the tourist office). At the end of the pedestrian zone turn right then left at the roundabout (supermarket) At the end of the supermarket car park, in Les Moulineaux, head down a small tarmac path towards the lake. /The path is steep with sharp bends and the lower part has a few stones. Turn right at Le Chaffal. At the end of the road, turn left to reach the right bank of the Durance. On the banks of the Durance turn left onto the small road that runs alongside the river. Pass under a bridge. At the D994d road, continue to the right, cross the Durance by the wooden bridge and then turn left towards Saint-André d'Embrun. Before the bridge over the Crévoux, turn right onto the small road that climbs towards Clot Peyrolier Haut. At the hamlet of "Coin Haut", go straight ahead, join the bend of the D39 and turn right up the torrent de Crévoux as far as Crévoux. At Crévoux ascend right towards the resort (D39a). From the village square, head up the street that starts at the war memorial. At "Champ La font 2", take the stony track opposite towards the hamlet of La Chalp. Continue straight ahead on the main path until you reach the road. At the bend, ascend the road on the right to the picnic area (Cabane des Espagnols) At the picnic area, turn right twice onto the path leading upwards (there is a spring on the road after the Réal bridge on the right). Stay on the main track (Route forestière de Bouche Clauze). Head downhill and turn right at the bend in the track. At the crossroads go straight on At the crossroads of the H24 DFCI track, continue straight ahead on the main track to reach the village of Les Orres. At the county town, descend to the left towards the church (fontaine le commun). Turn right down the hairpin road towards Embrun. At the D40 turn left for 20 m (Plan des hameaux) and go down the path on the right, which is not very visible (/! presence of stones) At the Route du Pont (D540), turn left up to Le Melezet.

A short, easy loop with little change in altitude to explore Baratier and the surrounding area. From Place Saint Chaffrey (church square), head up the street to the main village square. The route starts at the foot of the sloping road opposite. Continue along rue de la côte and turn left when you reach the road. Then turn left onto a wide path. Continue on this gently sloping path at the next two intersections. Join the road and turn right to ascend for around 100 metres towards Val Ubaye. At the sign for Vurbaye, take a small path to the right. At the end of the narrow path, head down the road towards the village of Baratier. It soon turns into a small path. Then join the road and turn right to return to the centre of the village.

Allow yourself to be guided through fields and forests. Take the time to look around and to turn your excursion into a discovery of the many riches in store along the way. From the car park, cross the bridge to the village square in Baratier. Take the road leading uphill to the left following the sign "Boucle de Champs Rambaud". As the road rises, follow signs for "Belvédère de Plat Aiguille". At the top of a field, leave the road and take the forest path on the left. When you come to a paved road, go across the little earth mound and keep going in the same direction. The way rises along the edge of the fields. Two paths lead off at the next junction; take the uphill path towards the belvedere ("Belvédère"). At the turning, stay on the left and follow the path leading alongside the black marls. When you come to the « plat Aiguille 1,308 m » sign, continue to head towards the belvedere. After a lovely ascent, you will come to the Plat Aiguille belvedere. Turn right at the top of the small rise and follow the wide bypass. From this point, the way back to the village is entirely downhill. First, follow the Charmaille road, the Jean-Blanc spring and then the village square. A few hundred metres further on, turn right at the gate and leave the wide bypass.  After going through the last gate which brings you onto the road, turn right and continue downhill to the village square.

This easy route is ideal for family outings. From the car park, cross the bridge to the village square. Take the road to the right, after skirting the wall and passing the church, turn right onto the path, towards La Mûre and Clapier des Monges. At the crossroads, cross the road and go straight ahead. Then turn right towards Plaine du Liou. A few metres further on, take the left-hand path. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead towards the Canal. At the crossroads at the canal, turn left towards Clapiers de Monges . After passing the archaeological site, continue along the canal. At the fork in the road, turn left and head for the village square. From this crossroads, continue straight ahead to return to the car park.

Nestled at the foot of the west face of the Sirac, this refuge was built in 2001 from wood and stone. Bright, spacious dormitories with duvets. Hot water showers and indoor toilets. From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

The channels are strategically positioned to irrigate the various plots, by opening and closing the sluice gates. This age-old technique enables water flows to be controlled according to farmers' needs.

The cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is the city's landmark. It is the largest religious building in the French Alps. It overlooks the Durance valley. Impossible to miss on a visit to the plain beneath the Roc. It stands out for its Lombardy-inspired architecture, with alternating black schist and white limestone.

This footbridge, which was completed in 2019, links Embrun with Crots and Baratier. Although it is a recent development, it actually boasts a long history. It stands on the exact site of the temporary bridge that replaced the La Clapière road bridge from 1953 onwards, which was destroyed during the Second World War by resistance fighters from the Embrunais area after the failure of an American bombing to do so. The aim was to prevent German forces from sending reinforcements to Gap, whose liberation was imminent. Although the bridge managed to withstand the American bombs, several people were killed and an explanatory panel on the footbridge pays tribute to them today..

This building dates back to the fifteenth century. It has the same architectural style as the Abbey of Boscodon. Like many churches in the area, it has been ransacked on a number of occasions and was set alight by the Army of Savoie. The church was completely restored in 1998. In the sundial, there is a saying: "Poor but proud, and in good heart". Next to it is the village's coat of arms, which is represented by a greyhound.

You will come across numerous irrigation canals in the fields and along the roadsides. They are distributed strategically so that the various plots can be irrigated, by opening and closing valves. This age-old technique makes it possible to control the water flows according the farmers' needss.

The church of Saint-Sauveur, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration, was built in the second half of the 15th century. It is easy to identify by its bell tower, which rises high above the town of Embrun and Lake Serre-Ponçon. The interior of the church is particularly notable for its restored murals. They mainly depict the Transfiguration, the period in Christ's life when he revealed his divine nature to his disciples so that they could recognise him as the Messiah.

The Durance rises near the Montgenèvre pass and flows into the Rhône near Avignon. It feeds lake Serre-Ponçon and is a real asset to the region's economy, thanks to the host of activities it supports: water sports, hydroelectricity and agriculture. Over 320 kilometres long, it is the most important river in Provence. In the past, the Durance was reputed to be impassable, due to its strong flow and great width.

Built at the sources of the White Drac, near the disused Champoléon cabin, this refuge with its stone roof offers tasty regional food at lunchtime and copious Alpine meals in the evening. The refuge is easy to access for families: 1 hr 30 mins from the Auberts car park (elevation: 350 m). Large number of hiking trails leaving from the refuge.

The pastoral cabin at Champoléon was built by stockbreeders in 1921. It was in 1972 that the cabin was restored for the first time... Two years later, the French Alpine Club (CAF) took over its management in order to insure shelter for the increasing number of hikers of the GR54. Having become too cramped, the refuge was rebuilt in 1979 on the ruins of the hamlet and became the Chaumette Meadow. The decorative stones were cut on site at  Champoléon. The imposing Lauzes stones used to cover the roof underline the effort made to integrate with the landscape. Today flocks of sheep are brought up to the mountains at the end of June and are visited once a week.

A former Alpine chalet converted into a mountain refuge. Five dormitories for 4 to 6 people with individual beds, showers and sanitary facilities. Top-quality food with mountain specialities. The refuge is located on one of the Tour du Vieux Chaillol paths. A large number of hikes leave from the refuge: Cascade de la Pisse (20 mins), Col de la Vénasque (3h), Col de Côte Longue (4h), the summit of Le Vieux Chaillol (3163 m), but also the unspoilt valleys of the Muande and Mal Cros! A little paradise only a 1 hr 30 min walk away! Elevation 345 metres.

Mountain refuge located at the source of the Bléone river, at an altitude of 2,050 m in the village of Prads-Haute-Bléone. Accessible only on foot (3h walk). Numerous hikes available, including the Tête de l'Estrop at 2961m of altitude, as well as sport fishing, bouldering and slacklining. Accommodation and catering available by prior arrangement. Catering only at lunchtime. No reservations in July and August.

A small lake, pretty meadows and the benevolent Sirac... This magical setting would lead to the construction of a refuge at an altitude of 2270 m in 1942. However, it was a victim of its own success and in 2000 the decision was made to build a second, bigger one. It can accommodate 37 instead of 22. This new building was the first modern mountain refuge to be built using stones on site rather than imported materials. It copies the simplicity and the crow-stepped gable from the "small refuge" which has been kept as lodgings for a warden's helper.

Nestled at the foot of the west face of the Sirac, this refuge was built in 2001 from wood and stone. Bright, spacious dormitories with duvets. Hot water showers and indoor toilets. From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Accessible in 2 hrs 30 mins from Gioberney car park, elevation 700 metres.

Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

Perched on a rock, Les Bans mountain refuge offers a clear view of the Onde valley on one side and the cirque of high summits that surround the valley to the other side. It was made of dressed stones roughly fifty years ago and can sleep 22 people. It is very animated during the day as it welcomes walkers who have come to taste local specialities, but it regains its calm in the evening and offers a valuable lookout for observing ibex and chamois. You are sure to have an unforgettable evening in the end of the world atmosphere of this refuge thanks to the warm welcome from the wardens and the soup made in the solar oven.

Self catering and half-board gite for groups and mountain activities stay. Between Ubaye and Lavender, 1100m high, the Flagustelle gîte hosts you at any given time in the year. Near Gap and Digne, close to Seyne and the ski resorts of Chabanon and Montclar and the mountain resorts of Le Grand Puy and Le Fanget. The village of Verdaches will charm you.
