This route will take you up to the Col de Fontbelle. It is a crossing of exceptionally rare landscapes, discover the immense Fontbelle forest which offers unforgettable panoramic views of the Haute-Provence Geopark. 65% of the route is on road.

This hike, starting from the village of Thoard, follows the markings of the great crossing of the Prealps. In its first part, which may seem a little difficult, the path winds through a scrubland area before reaching a magnificent beech forest. The hike continues on the shady side of the Siron massif to reach the crest at “la Bigue” and offer a superb panoramic view.

This family walk, through its loop-shaped circuit starting from the village of Thoard, allows you to discover the valley's crops with the astonishing network of agricultural fields. You will discover the Siron distillery, the long crest of Vaumuse blocking the horizon, before having at the end of the route a plunging view of the village with tall houses huddled together around the bell tower.

Perched on the rock of Sainte-Madeleine overlooking the Duyes valley and the village of Thoard, the chapel of the same name, dating from 1657, was completely restored in 2002 by the artist Andy Goldsworthy, it is part of the work Refuge d'Art. Don't hesitate to enter the chapel, Andy Goldsworthy** intervenes here on the entire building. The back wall is lined with a regular arrangement of cut stones in the center of which an egg-shaped cavity allows one to stand. This is where "others have stood before, and where others will stand after", says the artist. He designs this penetrable device as a case that preserves the memory of visitors, witness to their presence, but also to their absence in this place. **Andy Goldsworthy (Sale Moor, England, 1956) places nature at the heart of his work. But without reducing his works to natural materials, nor to the natural processes that pass through them, he takes into account the nature of the place and its history. This explains why Andy Goldsworthy works mainly in places marked by human presence. Refuge d’Art a single work of art to be covered in about ten days of walking. Today it consists of seven refuges and three Sentinels connected by a path. Originally, old abandoned farm buildings, a ruined chapel, collapsed shepherd's huts... founded the project of their restoration by the artist, in order to accommodate a work of art and shelter walkers and hikers. On the facade of the chapel, look for a golden dot, engraved in the stone. This is point, by the artist herman de vries* (2009). For him, nature is sufficient in itself and does not need to be embellished by art: "nature is art", he says, because it is perpetual creation. * we respect the artist's wish not to use capital letters, a form of hierarchy. Formed about 220 million years ago in a salty lagoon, gypsum is a soft rock composed of calcium sulfate. Heated in a kiln, it loses its water by evaporation and turns into plaster. Then, after being ground in the open air or in a mill, it can be rehydrated and used in construction. In the 1840th century, many small extraction sites existed in Haute-Provence. Traditional architecture offers multiple uses for plaster: from the coarsest used as mortar for building walls to the finest used for making plasterwork. In Thoard, gypsum quarries have been documented since 1890, but extraction probably began much earlier. The best known is the Siron quarry, mentioned from 1940, which was exploited until XNUMX. The stone was extracted in the open air with a pickaxe and mattock, then loaded onto sleds commonly used in the valley for agricultural work on steep slopes. It was thus transported to the village to the plaster factory. There, a mill powered by hydraulic energy, created by a fall on the Riou torrent, operated a heavy vertical stone millstone.

Located at 1200 meters, the chapel is discovered after a climb without great difficulty via the castle of Beaucouse. In a relatively dry landscape, it appears as a sort of oasis nestled on a grassy platform with its source of fresh water. According to tradition, miracles were at the origin of the construction of this sanctuary. A pilgrimage, at the beginning of August, still brings together pilgrims from the various surrounding villages.

A plaque in the geological reserve gives directions to Pierre Gassendi's birthplace. The panoramic view is superb over the Cousson mountain and the Dourbes bar. Pierre Gassendi, known as Gassendi, was born here in 1592 into a modest family. He studied and became a doctor of theology at the faculty of Avignon, then was ordained a priest. From 1613 to 1623, he taught philosophy at the University of Aix-en-Provence. Passionate about astronomy, he made numerous observations throughout his life. He adhered to the Copernican system and corresponded with Galileo. Provost of Digne from 1626, he divided his time between Digne and Paris where he taught mathematics at the Collège royal from 1645 to 1648.

In a preserved natural environment, this hike accesses the old paths linking Mélan to the hamlets of Auribeau and Brigands, to geological sites and to panoramic viewpoints over the Duyes valley. From the Col de l'Hysope and its viewpoint, the route descends to the Clue de Bramefan before going around the Roche des Brigands through its undergrowth of beeches and pines. Along the path between Auribeau and Mélan, we find the remains of the filioles on the side of the rock, and the hamlets of Brigands and Villard on each side of the Bramafan ravine. From the Col St Pierre there is a beautiful view of the Duyes valley and the Château d'Auribeau.

From the Col de Fontbelle head towards the St Vincent cave, following the GR®6 which leads to the aerial ridge with a view of the Duyes valley, the Lure mountain and the middle Durance valley. Possible departure from Mélan (15 km – 5 hours – 800 m D+). Go down towards the south for 1 km and take the yellow PR on the left towards the Grande Aiguille. From the top of the GR®6, you can follow the ridge track towards the East, punctuated by panoramas, up to the Grande Aiguille. The path on the North side will take you back to the Col de Fontbelle.

Since 1922, our mill extracts extra virgin olive oil, a genuine fruit juice, only with mechanical means to olive oil amateurs’ great joy. For more than 40 years we have been making cosmetics and soap made in a cauldron just like Marseille soap. The harvest of olives is done manually with hand and automatic combs to preserve olives quality. Then, we proceed to the grinding of the fruit with a simple mechanical method, without the addition of chemicals or change in temperature. At the end of the grinding, we get an extra virgin olive oil with a free acidity lower than 0.8%. Our mill produces a local extra virgin olive oil. Our olive oil is peppery and refreshing which is specific to the aglandau olives (90%). Nearly 400 olive growers bring their olives to supply you with: - Green fruity olive oil - Local olive oil All our products are available at our shop and online shop: olive oil, homemade products, Marseille soaps… We also make basil, mint and lemon oils. At 1880 m, the Crête de Géruen offers a magnificent panorama. From its summit, it is possible to discover the highlands of the Provence. The view  on the various surrounding reliefs is also magnificent (the Monges, the Montagne de Lure, the Cloches de Barles ...).

In this small valley, this humpback beam bridge over the River Vançon reflects the life of yesteryear. A mediaeval construction from the 14th century, the bridge gave access to the village of Saint-Symphorien. Queen Joan, Countess of Provence and Queen of Naples in the 14th century, is thought to have given it to the residents of the village as thanks for offering her refuge when she was accused of the murder of her husband, Andrew of Hungary (King of Naples).

Geological sites The Ammonite Slab The most emblematic site of the Haute Provence Geopark. The 320 m² Ammonite Slab boasts over 1,550 fossils, the biggest being over 70 cm! This species allows us to establish that the slab is around 200 million years old. Ichthyosaur Reptile fossil, 90 million years old. Location : La Robine Bird Footprints 20 million years ago, the region of Digne les Bains was a sea basin. Birds walked on the beaches’ wet sand, leaving footprints that were later fossilized. Sea currents that sculpted the seabed 130 million years ago were also fossilized. Barles Canyons After several million years of erosion, the Barles Canyons offer amazing landscapes.

This route goes up onto the wild ridges between the Monges summit and Jouère summit. The rise through the forest allows you to reach the Sapie pass where the landscape opens onto mountain pastures and offers a great panoramic view on the surrounding mountains and further, the Durance valley.

Vorouno in provençal, the etymology comes from the celt « Vel Aon » that means to the water, the village setting up at the confluence of the Durance and the Grave torrent. Volonne is a little village of 1 700 inhabitants at the foot of a rocky spur overhung by two towers. Volonne is also called the "little Nice of the Alps" because of its sunny exposition facing the south-west. Volonne invites you to discover its streets which are fresh in summer and stamped with a rich historical past. In the main street, you can see houses with their medieval doors. In Vière street, you will discover old ramparts and an aqueduct from the 16th century. The two towers Volonne is dominated by two towers, the highest one is a watchtower from the 13th century and the lowest one is the 16th century communal clock . The church Saint Martin Above the stadium, next to the cemetery, you can visit Saint-Martin's church which is a major building of the first Romanesque Art (11th century). It was originally part of a priory. It is with the chapel of Saint-Donat (Montfort) one of the most remarkable specimens of early Romanesque art (11th century). The fortified castle in the village centre, from the 17th century, has an exceptionnal staircase decorated with plasterstones, unique in Provence.

The Clot des Martres ridge is located between the Jouère mountain and the Monges massif. The Sapie pass (1744 meters) allows you to overcome the ridge, linking Authon to la Sapie. Many waterways arise from the ridge side.
