A family walk with little difference in altitude. The majority of the walk is in the shade and offers a spectacular view over the valley that joins Ambérieu to Belley. The path runs along the cliff and children need to be supervised. Along the way, you will meet climbers and via-ferratists coming up from the cliff.

Day 2 of the southern loop of the Grande Traversée du Jura on Mountain bike from La Praille to Les Plans d'Hotonnes. With a length of almost 27 km, this second stage is the easiest of the three following a hilly route between 3 northern sites of Ain: La Praille, Lachat and Plans d'Hotonnes. Through the forests and ridges of Bugey, this stage will take you from the forests of the Plateau d'Hauteville to the large expanses of the Plateau de Retord. Hiking itinerary that takes you to the discovery of the village of Cerdon, its landscapes of vineyards and limestone rocks with a view of the entire valley of Cerdon from the rock of Saint-Alban and its old church.

The Round Earth Ski Centre provides some fantastic downhill skiing in a great family atmosphere with pistes to suit all levels of experience and ages. The centre is located just outside of Hauteville-Lompnes at an altitude of between 900m and 1,200m. The Round Earth Ski Centre has 10 of well cared for downhill pistes which are made up of 3 green slopes, 2 blue, 4 red and 1 black. The centre has 4 drag lifts and it is possible to rent skis, snowboards, sleds, snowshoes, helmets, snow blades and surfing binders. There is also a 2km snowshoeing circuit (in conjunction with Praile Cross-Country Centre). At the bottom of the pistes after a great day's skiing you will find a snack bar.

If you like exercise, nature and wide open spaces, the cross-country ski area of Praille in the Col de la Rochette is the ideal place to enjoy Nordic skiing and snowshoe. The Praille Cross-Country Skiing Centre has 8 different pistes with a combined length of 53km. These pistes are made up of 4 green runs, 1 blue runs, 2 red runs and 1 black run as well as a downhill slalom piste of 800m. There is also 5 snowshoeing circuits from 3.5 to 6.5 km in length and 2 tobogganing pistes. Accommodation is available at the nearby Gîte de Praille in addition to a bar and restaurant and children’s play area. It is also possible to hire all the skiing equipment you will need at The Praille Cross-Country Skiing Centre.

The cottage of Espace Eau Vive is a friendly and functional accommodation, ideal for sports groups, associations, kayak clubs or families looking for a simple and practical place in nature. With a capacity of 26 beds, it consists of rooms equipped with single bunk beds and common areas designed to facilitate group life. You will find a large fully equipped kitchen, a spacious refectory, a relaxation room (living room), as well as two sanitary blocks. Bed linen is not provided: each participant must bring their own duvet and/or sheets. Located right next to the artificial river, the cottage offers privileged access to whitewater activities, technical internships or multi-activity stays. In order to ensure the comfort of all and preserve the tranquility of the place, the cottage does not host festive events (EVG/EVJF, birthdays, rugby clubs or similar). It is mainly aimed at groups seeking calm, sport and cohesion in a natural setting. Not provided: sponges, dishwashing liquid or dishwasher tablets, dish towels, toilet paper... The cottage is available from 2pm on the day of your arrival and must be vacated before 11am on the day of your departure.

Referred to locally as the "diamond of Le Bugey", a picturesque, listed village which has the peculiarity of being built in a circle. Fine view from the cross of Evosges. To explore the village is to soak up its simple charm. You won't realize how special it is until you visit, so it's best to get some height. The Evosges cross, just a few kilometers above, offers a perfect vantage point over the unusual village and the superb valley that surrounds it.

The Charabotte waterfall is a 115-metre waterfall set in lush green surroundings. Whether it's revealed at its full height or hidden from view by vegetation, approaching it is always a breathtaking experience. This imposing site can be visited either from the bottom of the valley at Chaley, or from the Hauteville plateau. The reculée ends at the bottom of the valley with the Charabotte waterfall, one of the highest in France at over 110 metres. It marks the start of the Albarine Gorge, named after the river that feeds it and rises in Brénod. The water from the falls then flows through the Hauteville valley to the Golet du Thiou. The site has been listed as a "natural monument of artistic interest" since 1909. The Charabotte waterfall was awarded the "Espace Naturel Sensible" or "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2015. True natural and landscape jewels of the Département de l'Ain, these sites benefiting from the ENS label are on the one hand preserved thanks to local management and on the other hand made accessible to as many people as possible when the fragility of the site allows.

The Charabotte Waterfall is one of the tallest in France. This impressive 115-meter-high cascade can be seen between Chaley and the Hauteville Plateau, in the Albarine Valley, named after the river that plunges off the cliff. A viewpoint along the road from the Hauteville Plateau to Tenay allows for easy observation, with a small parking area available. As early as 1909, the site was classified as a “natural monument of artistic character,” highlighting its heritage value. Since 2002, the cliffs have been protected to preserve bird habitats, including ravens and peregrine falcons. More recently, in 2017, the site was designated a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) by the Department of Ain. The modest river transforms into a powerful, ever-changing, poetic waterfall. The charming name “Charabotte” comes from a local legend: during a flood in Chaley, the legendary Cat with Seven-League Boots slipped and fell into the water-filled meadows. An old farmer exclaimed that the water was up to the cat’s boots, and from that day, the waterfall’s name, Charabotte, was born.

Perched high up in the hills overlooking Ambérieu-en-Bugey the Château des Allymes has stood guard over the town since the 14th century. The château was built by the Dauphin of Vienne in 1310. It fell into the hands of the Duke of Savoy in 1335 and became part of France again in 1601. The Chateau des Allymes (Allymes Castle) has preserved intact many features of medieval military architecture that defended the territory during the Middle Ages. The Chateau des Allymes is made up of two sections. There is an upper courtyard which is formed by four curtain walls linking the keep (donjon) to the round or watch tower. Secondly there is the outer bailey with the remains of a large fortifying wall and a small watch tower. In 1960 the Château des Allymes was listed as a Historic Monument and was saved from total ruin. It has been open to the public since 1966. The château is managed by the Association des Amis du Château des Allymes (Friends of the Château des Allymes) and today it houses exhibitions, concerts and conferences. Since 1984 the château has officially been the property of the town of Ambérieu-en-Bugey. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the listing of the château, an exhibition room was opened in 2010. It is named in honour of René de Lucinge (1553-1624), Lord of Allymes, who was instrumental in the integration of Ain into France in 1601 with the Treaty of Lyon.

The Château de Champdor is located a few kilometers drive north of Hauteville-Lompnes. The building dates from 1743 and has 2 tall towers and several outbuildings. Please note that it is not possible to visit the inside of the château. The Château de Champdor comprises of 14 rooms and has a traditional pigeon house within its grounds. It is not possible to visit the interior of the château except during certain dates during July and August when art exhibitions are held there.

The occupation of this superb site dates back to the 7th century (funerary chapel). During the time of the Delphino-Savoyard wars (1272-1355). The chateau was among the most important “chatelleries” (lordships) and was behind the commissioning of the chateaux of Saint-Denis and Allymes. These three sites thus formed a line of defence expected to prevent the Savoyards’ expansion to Bresse. For a number of years, the committee to safeguard old St.Germain (Comité de Sauvegarde du Vieux St-Germain), formed in 1996 under the impetus of Armand Decour, has been ensuring the upkeep of the site backed by the support of the town. What remains today of the Medieval chateau are sections of the surrounding wall (including two “false towers”), the wall that separates the upper court from the lower bailey, and a very lovely ogival door.

The highest point of the Hauteville plateau, Mont Planachat reaches an altitude of 1,234 meters. The view to the east reveals the Grand Colombier massif, now famous due to its many Tour de France stages, as well as the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. The orientation table allows you to identify the surrounding peaks, valleys, and plateaus. In the foreground, the view overlooks the clearing of the Ferme Guichard inn, an old 17th-century Bugey farmhouse renowned for its cheese fondues and slate-cooked meats. Mount Planachat can be reached via the Planachat road from the center of Cormaranche-en-Bugey, followed by a 250-meter trail. Hikers can take the “Belvédère de Planachat” walking route, a 7 km loop starting from the church.

Built on the municipality of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, in the hamlet of Varey, do not hesitate to discover the Castle of Varey, which bases are medieval. The Château de Varey is located a short distance from the village of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. There has been a fortification on this site since the 12th century. The magnificent building which can be seen there today dates from the 19th century when the château was completely rebuilt.

You will find a large fully equipped kitchen, a spacious refectory, a relaxation room (living room), as well as two sanitary blocks. Bed linen is not provided: each participant must bring their own duvet and/or sheets. Located right next to the artificial river, the cottage offers privileged access to whitewater activities, technical internships or multi-activity stays. In order to ensure the comfort of all and preserve the tranquility of the place, the cottage does not host festive events (EVG/EVJF, birthdays, rugby clubs or similar). It is mainly aimed at groups seeking calm, sport and cohesion in a natural setting. Not provided: sponges, dishwashing liquid or dishwasher tablets, dish towels, toilet paper... The cottage is available from 2pm on the day of your arrival and must be vacated before 11am on the day of your departure.

Located in the heart of Île de la Serre, between nature and artificial white-water river, Camping de l'Espace Eau Vive is a 2-star campsite designed to accommodate athletes, kayakers and all those who are looking for a simple, authentic stay. Its green environment and friendly atmosphere make it an ideal stop along the ViaRhôna or a perfect starting point for a weekend of sports. The campsite offers 37 pitches, suitable for tents, vans and small motorhomes. A few shaded pitches are available, but the majority are in sunny areas: it is therefore advisable to plan something to protect yourself from the sun. For an unusual stay, 7 atypical accommodations are offered : - 3 Domino tents: At the heart of the white water space site, the 3 domino tents have a capacity of 6 beds each. A dining area with two refrigerators and 2 gas hobs as well as a common tent with tables and benches for meals is available. - 4 Trapper Tents: The trapper area is composed of 4 wooden tents with 6 beds each, a 3m x 3m kitchen tent with two refrigerators, 2 gas hobs as well as a 32m2 common tent with tables and benches for meals. For all tents: Provide pillows, fitted sheets, sleeping bags (only the mattress protector is provided), toilet paper and all kitchen essentials (pots, dishes, cutlery...). There is no heating or lighting in the tents (lighting in the kitchen and meal tents only). The campers have a common toilet block, functional and maintained (toilet paper not provided). At the entrance of the campsite, a sheltered 200 m2 barnum equipped with tables and benches allows to meet, shelter or share meals. The services include: free Wi-Fi, possibility of electric connection 5A for a fee, and a snack bar open in season offering ice creams, cold drinks and hot drinks. There is no catering on site. The campsite particularly appeals to kayakers thanks to its immediate proximity to the artificial river of the Espace Eau Vive. The evening atmosphere is generally calm, with campers mainly coming to train, recharge or attend sports camps.
