This fortified mediaeval city overlooks one of the loops of the Moselle. It was once the summer residence of the Bishops of Toul. Follow the “madeleine route” (a local speciality) and discover seven iconic signposts, and scan 14 QR codes on the sides of houses to get architectural details.

Explore this walking and cycling path, a bucolic 19.5-km-long stabilised sand route created along a former railway. It begins in Custines at the end of the Rue Claude Le Lorrain cul-de-sac, which has around twenty parking spaces, and currently ends in Nomeny. It runs through the lovely Mauchère valley, which takes its name from the little 8-km-long stream that runs through Custines, Malleloy, Faulx and Montenoy. The rolling countryside offers viewpoints over the orchards, fields, villages and woods. This “Voie Verte” path takes you on a discovery tour of local rural animals, including sheep, cows and horses. In fact, there is a strong probability that you will come across riders on the section that is open to them, near to the Diapason and Paquis stables in Faux.

The Moselle rises in the Vosges mountains at the Col de Bussang, but is actually the result of the merger of several streams originating in the Vosges mountains. It flows into the Rhine at Koblenz in Germany. Its total length is 560 kilometers, of which 314 kilometers are in France. The Moselle has been used as a waterway since Gallo-Roman times, enabling Roman battles against the Celts and the transport of salt produced in the Seille region. Throughout the Middle Ages, navigation was in full swing. Then, in the 16th and 17th centuries, navigation on the Moselle disappeared. At most, it was used to float timber from the Vosges. Today, the Moselle is a busy commercial river, particularly between Frouard and Luxembourg. Yachting harbors and secondary branches, however, provide shelter from the traffic. On the outskirts of Nancy, the landscape of wooded hills is very pleasant.

Le Bois Saint-Ignon: A 6.8 km trail through woods and other areas for exploring, making for a varied itinerary. It is also a smooth and easy circuit for mountain bikes. Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Named after the priest who built the Saint-Epvre basilica, rue Monseigneur Trouillet is lined with some very fine residences, including the Hôtel d'Haussonville. The balustrades are different in style, one flamboyant Gothic, the other Renaissance. Admire the beautiful carved wooden door of the tower, which houses a staircase.

The late 16th century town house known as ‘Maison des Deux Sirènes’ (house of the two mermaids) takes its name from the sculpture on the corner of the building which depicts, not two mermaids, but two Tritons in an embrace. The richly sculpted front door is decorated with a head wearing a plumed headdress, and a ruff typical of the fashion of the period. When the French invaded Nancy in 1634, Nicolas-François, who had become Duke of Lorraine that same year, and his wife Claude of Lorraine, the daughter of the late Duke Henry II, hid in the house because the French did not approve of their marriage. During the night of 31 March to 1 April 1634, the couple disguised themselves as commoners and fled to Florence.

Located on the rue des loups, the mansion, built by architect Germain Boffrand in the 18th century, opens with a monumental door surmounted by two stone wolves, a reminder of the owner's position as wolfkeeper to the Dukes of Lorraine. Self-guided tours, exteriors only.

The Church of the Cordeliers (Eglise de Cordeliers) is named after the Franciscan Order whose members wore a cord around their waist. It was built in the 15th century by order of Duke René II, following the Battle of Nancy of 1477. Lorraine’s Saint-Denis (burial place of some of France’s famous kings), in spite of incurring damage through the ages, it still has some remarkable tombs. The chapel, inspired by that of the Medici’s in Florence, is outstanding. It belongs to the Lorraine museum,

Built in the 16th century following the battle of Nancy, it used to be the residence of the dukes of Lorraine. Abandoned by duke Leopold who moved to Luneville ,in the 18th century, it became the Lorraine museum in 1848. It has a remakable gatehouse inspired by that at the french royal castle of Blois chateau. It combines gothic and italian Renaissance art.

Nancy's Ville Vieille is the historic heart of the ducal city, a district of undeniable charm that stretches from the old town proper to the immediate vicinity of the Cours Léopold. It also includes a number of green and architectural gems, such as the Parc de la Pépinière and the majestic Place de la Carrière. The district is an integral part of Nancy's "secteur sauvegardé", a status that testifies to its rich heritage. It is also home to one of the famous three UNESCO World Heritage squares - Place de la Carrière - which is elegant, discreet and remarkable. A number of old arteries with evocative names - rue du Haut-Bourgeois and rue de la Monnaie, to name but a few - lead to the Cours Léopold. Built in 1778 on the site of the former rampart ditches, the Cours Léopold and the Place Carnot form a vast, lively open space. The old town is framed by the Porte de la Craffe to the north, and criss-crossed by the Grande-Rue, the historic backbone that connects it from north to south. To the east, it flirts with the more recent city center, while to the south, the northern end of Place Stanislas marks its border with the Ville-Neuve district.

The Basilica of Saint Epvre was built in the 19th century by Prosper Morey, Prix de Rome architect, in the neo-Gothic style. Work was carried out between 1864 and 1871 by a number of European workshops, including stained glass from Austria and Metz, woodwork from Bavaria and cast bells from Budapest. There are no fixed opening hours inside the building. The parish insists that someone be present in the church when it is open (for security reasons), and this presence is maintained by volunteers, so times may vary.

A fine example of Nancy's former seigneurial residences, the Hôtel de Lillebonne stands on the site of a former municipal bathhouse. It was built for Claude de Beauvau by architect Nicolas La Hiere. After becoming a ducal property, it was offered by Charles IV to his daughter Anne, wife of the Prince de Lillebonne. Its Italianate facade reflects the artistic exchanges between Lorraine and Italy at the end of the 16th century. The hotel's most striking artistic feature is the staircase, reminiscent of the one at Château de Fléville, also owned by the Beauvau family. It is decorated with fine interlacing and palmettes sculptures. The building is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture in Nancy. Ceded in 1972 to the de Nancy, it now houses a Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture.
