This cycling route will take you from the Côte Fleurie coast to the Dives marshlands via a portion of green way offering an opportunity to quietly discover the kingdom of the herons and storks. You will follow the narrow route known as the ‘Chemin de l'anguille’ (eel's way) that zigzags its way through the marshlands to Robehomme. You will then continue on roads with low traffic density via small and typical Pays d'Auge villages.

Linking Villers-sur-Mer to Tourgéville, this greenway offers a pleasant and safe route. It passes through the Blonville-Villers marshes, a natural area covering nearly 120 hectares where birds and white storks find a place to nest amongst the wet meadows and canals.

In the Pays d’Auge, water springs from all around. Along this itinerary, you will come across sources and wash houses, as you cross waterways on small bridges. A stream even accompanies you along part of the route!

These marshlands stretch across 120ha and offer a peaceful environment for the many bird species that nest here. Over recent years, white storks have come to feed here and a specific platform to facilitate their nesting has been installed.

This viewpoint is sealed to a bunker of the World War II. At this location was filmed a scene from "Un singe en Hiver" by Henri Verneuil with Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Below are the cliffs « Les Vaches Noires ». They extend beetween Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer have been listed as a site of natural and scientific interest in 1995. This site is a wide fossil necropolis of the Jurassic period. You can visit and collect fossils only when tide is going out. It is forbidden to dig to collect fossils.

The Vaches noires cliffs lie between Houlgate and Villers-sur-Mer. The name "Vaches noires" comes from the words of sailors. Seen from the sea, the presence of large chalk blocks on the seaweed-covered beach evokes a herd of cows grazing at the foot of the cliffs. Its geological and paleontological wealth makes it a site of major interest. The cliffs are also remarkable for their original "badlands" morphology, a succession of ravines and spurs. The Villers-sur-Mer tourist office organizes outings from the beach throughout the year, inviting visitors to discover these exceptional cliffs. On the plateau, in Auberville, a 1.7 km loop will introduce you to the site's natural ambience.

From 1957 to 1984, Euclides Ferreira Da Costa enhanced his garden by creating picturesque artistic installations using chips of old plates and glass to form a mosaic: chapels, mills, frescos… a world that is as religious as it is naive and poetic, the world of this self-inspired artist. Open in the high season (once a week, from mid-July to mid-September and during the European Heritage Days). Group visits on request.

Villers-sur-Mer Beach will delight our cycling enthusiasts. It is the first French city to be crossed by the Greenwich Meridian. The seaside resort is also a testimony to the Golden Age with its picturesque villas that run along the beach. Special feature of this beach: the Black Cow Cliffs, a geological curiosity dating from the Jurassic and Cretaceous period, 4.5 km long and 100 meters high. This manor house was built in the 17th century by Leduc de la Falaise, who was valet to the French King Louis XIV. It was later owned by a Lord from Bois-Hibout, to whom it owes its present-day name. Transformed to house a Gendarmerie in the 19th century, the building is also referred to as the ‘Lieutenancy’. The façade still bears the traces of former openings. They probably mark the presence of a former wing, perpendicular to the present-day building, which was destroyed in the early 20th century. They can still be seen on old postcards of the site. The manor was built in Caen stone on a sandy base. It has no foundations but lies on walls of a width of two metres.

Dives-sur-Mer’s indoor market bears witness to this highly active trade point that probably dates back prior to the 11th century. Dating on structural wooden beams conducted in 2012 has established that the market’s construction dates from the early 15th century, between 1405 and 1423. The building comprises a central nave and two symmetrical side aisles. The roof frame is supported by a series of 66 oak pillars, as were all major constructions at the time. The market was originally an open building, up to the early 20th century. The present-day side aisles were recently added, in typical Pays d’Auge half-timbered style, comprising a wooden skeleton with cob (a mix of clay and hay) between the beams. The roof is covered with old tiles produced from local clay. The wooden framework is in its original state. In the 1950s the eastern side of the market was closed. The floor was paved, which increased the level by around 20cm, and windows were added to the roofing to allow for natural light. The building houses a highly popular market on Saturday mornings, where you can find an excellent choice of regional fare.

Please note: part of the Village d'Art is closed indefinitely for safety reasons. This former coaching inn on the road from Caen to Rouen by the strike dates in part from the end of the 15th century. Many famous people have stayed here. At the end of the 19th century, with the fashion for sea bathing, a wealthy clientele moved in and the inn experienced its period of splendour with Monsieur Le Rémois. A great lover of art, he adorned the Norman buildings with medieval and Renaissance-style wood carvings. He acquired statues, vases and busts from the 17th and 18th centuries, which he installed in the courtyard.

Originally built in the 11th century, and completed in the 14th and 15th centuries, the church is particularly relevant to the story of William the Conqueror. A list of the names of William the Conqueror's 475 companions is engraved in stone above the porch.
