Following the edge of the forest, this route is very easy and accessible to all. It takes you from the centre of the village to Vonnes lake. It can also be done in the opposite direction. To start from the village centre: at the Super-Châtel cable car, take the concrete stairs on the left and walk 40m along the lift up the slope (the only difficulty), then turn right along the balcony path towards Lac de Vonnes. Return the same way or take the shuttle bus (line 4, Gabelou stop). Alternatively, from the Liaison Vonnes car park, cross the road by the footbridge to reach the start of the path. You can also take the shuttle bus to the lake (line 4, Gabelou stop). Return the same way or take the shuttle bus.

This is a magnificent route in fine weather, as the view from the crests stretches from the Mont Blanc chain to the main Swiss peaks. This area of ridges and passes was once a smuggling route between France and Switzerland. The path starts at the bottom station of the Super-Châtel cable car. First take the fairly steep path rising straight ahead to join the downhill ski slope rising on your left towards Le Crêt. Halfway up this climb, follow the path to the right into a spruce forest and, after a short climb, fork left to reach the wide carriage road leading to Super-Châtel. This path rises gently past the chalets de Conche, then follow the left-hand path back to Super-Châtel. Just left after the chalets, take the track to the summit of Morclan. Climb back down to the Col de la Folière and back up to the Pointe des Ombrieux, then continue through the mountain pastures (Portes d'Onnaz) to join the path at the start of the Tour de Don ski lift. From here, the path ends and takes you to a track leading up to the Chalets du Mouet. Turn left and continue downhill to the intermediate station of the Barbossine chairlifts. Follow the path to Le Tenne (at the end of the Petit-Châtel road), and then take the footpath towards the top of the hill. Take the path leading to Le Boude and continue to the village.

After the charming village resort of Châtel, the road rises more and more steeply, ending at a belvedere overlooking Lac de Montriond. Gradient: 5.5%. Accessible and signposted from the village center via the Route du Linga (D228).

During the ascent to the chalet of Sur le Bord, a beautiful forest of spruces offers itself to you. This conifer, too often confused with its cousin the fir, is essential to the ecosystem of the subalpine layer. It provides a pantry for squirrels and birds and shelters many nests. Its wood is used for the production of carpentry and joinery parts. Itinerary: The start of the walk begins with a tour of Lake Vonnes to the fishing guardian's chalet and then slightly uphill towards the departmental road that you cross and take the path leading to Pas de Morgins. At the pass, cross the departmental road again and take the path leading to the picnic area. Breathtaking view of the Lac de Vonnes. Take the rising forest track, the view then opens onto the upper Abondance valley (the Linga and the Essert waterfall). Once at the Sur le Bord chalet, the route crosses a spruce forest. After a short descent, you arrive at Lac de la Mouille, the ideal setting for a picnic. Take the road again, going down towards the chalets of Conche and after a few bends, you arrive at point 1395m where you take on the left the path plunging in the direction of Châtel. Arriving above the cable car, take the track leading to Lac de Vonnes.

Equipped with your guidebook and a full battery, you’re ready to explore the paths between France and Switzerland that were once used by smugglers and toll collectors during the days of coffee, chocolate and cheese smuggling... "The Smugglers Way" audio trail , is a family walk without any danger or difficulty. A walk of around 2 hours and with a departure at the Lake Vonnes, you will set off to discover the paths formerly used by smugglers. From the salt trade in the 18th century, to tobacco and butter, many goods crossed the border in this part of Chablais. Game of cat and mouse between smugglers and «gabelou», name given to the Customs officers of that time, this walk will immerse you in the history of the territory of Chablais. When you return from your walk, take the time to discover the "Centre d'Interprétation de la Contrebande en Montagne" (Old customs House) to learn more about the history of smuggling. Batteries can be rented either at the tourist office or at the Old Customs House.

This is an easy forestry out-and-back route that can be extended with a variant in the form of a loop, starting from the car park at the Vonnes inter-domain link. To get to the starting point from the centre of Châtel, head towards Vonnes and go as far as the inter-domain link, either by car or by taking the line 4 shuttle bus and getting off at the "Gabelou" stop. From the start sign, follow the path overlooking the Chapelle Notre Dame de Vonnes to join the Chemin des Ramines in the direction of the Gabelou chairlift. Cross the bridge and then turn left to follow the track above the chairlift station. At the junction with the downhill ski slope, turn left again at the hairpin bend and continue straight ahead through the forest to the beautiful viewpoint at Les Blattes. You can return to the start by the same route. Variation: continue on the wide track towards Morgins for 40m, then turn right onto a narrower path to complete the loop. Continue straight ahead on the relatively flat path (1 km) before plunging straight down the slope towards the Gabelou chairlift.

It's a short, easy loop that's suitable for all the family, with very little difference in altitude. From the village centre, head towards Vonnes, as the starting point is at the car park for the inter-domain link. To get there, take the line 4 shuttle bus and get off at the Gabelou stop. From the signpost at the Vonnes link car park, follow the path overlooking the Chapelle Notre Dame de Vonnes to reach the Chemin des Ramines, fork right downhill towards the loop prepared for pedestrians. You'll also find the Sous Vonnes sledging run.

This easy trail takes you between forest and mountain pastures to the sunny Petit-Châtel area, offering panoramic views of the village of Châtel and the Vallée d'Abondance. The trail starts at the end of the Petit-Châtel road, at the Tenne bend. From here it climbs gently up the mountainside through the forest. After 2 bends, the path reaches the link between the Petit-Châtel and Barbossine chairlifts. Bottom loop option : Go straight on, towards Flammet (Chalet de Théo), and then descend to the left towards the village. More experienced hikers can complete the route with a more difficult variant, the Up loop: At the chairlift, turn left and then right 100m further along the path leading up to Mouet. Continue as far as the 1st hairpin bend; immediately turn left to reach the mountain pastures where the panorama opens up. The route continues between forest and mountain pasture and then rejoins the path. Continue as far as the Col du Saix, where you can admire the panoramic views over the Abondance valley. From the col, you can join the path to La Chapelle d'Abondance (return to Châtel on the line C shuttle bus). The descent takes you through the forest to the Flammet chalets. At the fork in the road, turn right towards Le Ryz: pass several farms and an oratory and take the steep but short descent back to the road. Follow the road until you reach your starting point. To get to the start: - By car, take the Route du Petit Châtel as far as Barbossine (pay car park). - By shuttle bus (opposite the church, shuttle bus towards Petit-Châtel), Barbossine or Tenne stops - Alternatively, take the Petit Châtel chairlift (pedestrian fare), itinerary of 2.2km, 1 hour and 180m altitude difference.

With this path you’ll discover wonderful sceneries and learn more about fauna and flora, mountain surroundings. On your way, you’ll appreciate the geography and the Abondance valley shape in an arc of a circle with in its middle the “pyramid” of Mont-de-Grange. Itinerary: From the center of the village go towards Petit-Châtel until the end of the tarred road. Go up on the large path on 100m and take on your right, the path starts from here (sign to Super-Châtel). Go up easily until the alpine pastureland “Louennaz” and continue on your right until the alpine pastureland “Ortaz”.

This very easy route, accessible to all, will take you from Châtel through the forest to Morgins Lake in Switzerland. From the centre of Châtel, head towards Lac de Vonnes, where the path starts at the car park for the inter-domain link. You can get there by taking the line 4 shuttle bus and getting off at the "Gabelou" stop. From the signpost opposite the car park entrance, follow the path up to the Col de Morgins. You are now on the border with Switzerland, and you can go as far as the lake of the same name just after the pass. The view opens out onto the Dents du Midi in Switzerland, dominated by the Haute Cime (3,257m). If it's not covered in snow, the border marker at the pass is very interesting, with carved shields on either side (Swiss and Duke of Savoy). Return by the same route or by taking the shuttle bus. Alternative route: From Lac de Vonnes, walk alongside the lake and then, at the end of the lake, follow the small road leading to the start of the Vonnes link. Cross the road over the footbridge to reach the car park on the left.

Located in a magnificent setting on the edge of the forest with views of the mountains, it's the ideal place for a relaxing break. The area around the lake is well laid out for strolling, with a 180m-long pedestrian bridge over the water! Created in 1974 and situated at an altitude of 1,250 metres in a natural wetland area, the lake is fed by the Vonnes stream, which originates in Pas de Morgins (Switzerland). In early July 2000, a water jet was commissioned at Lake Vonnes. The installation is built on a stabilised concrete structure at the bottom of the lake, at a depth of approximately 7 metres below the water’s surface. A hollow jet protrudes a few centimetres above the lake’s surface. Spotlights installed around the perimeter of the discharge pipe allow us to admire this feature in all its splendour. This water jet, a veritable giant fountain, rises to a height of 40 metres. Furthermore, as it is situated at an altitude of 1,250 metres, it is therefore the highest water jet in France... It was built in 1630 near the path of Morgins, under the patronage of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, Saint-Bernard et Saint-Martin. During extension works in 1886, a little bell tower and a Virgin statue were added on the roof. Legend says that this chapel was used as a prison during the French Revolution.

Open the door of Châtel's Old Customs House to discover a different side to this cross-border region. Children and adults will enjoy a fascinating trip back in time, learning about the game of cat and mouse that went on between the smugglers and the customs officers (known as "gabelous") in the mountains of the Portes du Soleil before the advent of winter sports. With lots of eyewitness accounts and a fascinating exhibition packed with documents and illustrations, the Old Customs House tells the story of a picturesque world full of surprises! New temporary exhibition: "Everything to declare!... from the customs office to the smuggling museum". From its construction in the 1920s to the departure of the last gabelous in 2009 and the first visits to the interpretation centre, a lot has happened at the Châtel customs office! This unique temporary exhibition tells the anecdotes of the former gabelous who occupied these premises for almost a century! There are also activities on offer during the tourist season: recruitment sessions for future customs officers, audio trails following in the footsteps of smugglers, secret missions for the whole family to undertake, guided tours… There’s something for everyone!

Located in Super-Châtel in a magnificent setting at an altitude of 1650m, this 2-hectare, 6m-deep lake is accessible on foot from the village, by an easy walk of around 50 minutes, or by the Super Châtel cable car in July and August only.

Built in the 1920s, this sawmill initially used the hydraulic power of the Dranse. It was electrified in the mid-20th century to compensate for seasonal variations in the torrent's flow. It mainly produced spruce planks for joinery and construction, in volumes of up to 2m3 per day. It rarely cut fir, which was harder and less workable for joinery. According to Maurice Crépy, the last farmer, there were as many as seven sawmills in the village, revealing the importance of woodworking in the mountains. The forest was both a constraint, capable of invading the pastures, and a resource, for building, heating and crafts. Recently restored and brought back into use by the municipal services, the sawmill can be admired from the Bords de Dranse footpath. The walk allows you to see the different parts of the building and its mechanisms, as well as the surrounding forest landscape and the Villapeyron oratory built in the 19th century to protect the crossroads.

Located at 1,369 meters above sea level, the current lake is a relic of a glacial lake. Today, it has a small pond south along a wet zone of vegetation, fens of national importance and wet meadows. A romantic place where it is good to take a break and dream or just to rest your mind!

Natural curiosity enchanting young and old, Morgins' iron source of water, known as Eau Rouge, colors the stones of the Vièze with magnificent red colors that still intrigue walkers. In 1820, this source of water left Morgins out of anonymity, and this 19th century passage between the Lower Valais and the Val d'Abondance, a "halt on the moraine" from which its name much of its tourism development. Perched at 1,650 m altitude on the slope under the Corbeau chairlift, this quaint restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating offers a dazzling view of the Dents du Midi mountains! Accessible by car or on foot in summer, this is the perfect rest stop for a chilled drink on a sunny terrace. In winter, depending on the snow conditions, the restaurant can be accessed directly on skis from the Corbeau ski slope. Additionally, several snowshoe routes starting from Morgins criss-cross the surrounding forests and pass by the iconic Corbeau Hut. In the evening, by reservation for groups of 8 minimum.

Accessible via the picturesque Ponts path along the Vièze river, Claudine and Maurice welcome hikers to a bucolic setting, offering a place to rest and sample regional products. The restaurant is accessible all year round. At the end of May, the Inalpe celebrates the return of the Hérens cows to the mountain pastures, with cow fights and music. Raclette is celebrated at the end of August. The descent from the mountain pastures takes place at the end of September. Welcome to the La Chaux alpine restaurant, where traditional specialties and a hearty, homey welcome go hand-in-hand. Built in 1871, this picturesque gite is a wonderful example of local architecture. Built with solid wood beams called 'madriers' on a stone masonry base and covered with a snug, shingled roof, the building looks just as it did in the olden days. Inside, the central chimney still has the traditional truncated pyramid form. Owned by the Bellon family, this was exclusively a dairy farm until 2008, at which point the family began keeping cows in summer only. Little by little, the historic building has been renovated into an alpine bed and breakfast. Today, daytime visitors can sit down to a delicious meal of alpine specialities made from local products in the rustic dining room, cosy carnotzet or on the terrace with a splendid view of the Dents du Midi. Shop and local products will be on show (jams, plant jellies, local plant infusions, caramels, garden plant oil, pickled mushrooms, bricelets, liqueurs, syrups, etc.). SUMMER: This alp restaurant is accessible : - by car / bike upon an asphalted alpine road (route du Jorat) or - on foot, either from the summit of the Chairlift La Foilleuse (15 minutes) or from Morgins via Madzé (1h30). WINTER: Starting this winter, skiers can look forward to refueling at the restaurant, just off the La Chaux ski slope. Touring skiers who have taken a Rando-Parc itinerary up to La Foilleuse can stop for a well-earned pause at the restaurant before continuing on their way. Snowshoers following the Foilleuse-Madzé route can leave the signposted trail halfway along the route, at a farm, to reach the hut. Located at 1900 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Mont de Grange hunting reserve with panoramic terrace, this refuge is a privileged stopover, stage of the GR5 via the Col des Mattes. This idyllic alpine pasture in the heart of Les Portes du Soleil, easily accessible on foot or by chairlift, is a popular picnic destination for families and a renowned fishing spot! Built in the 19th century, the Refuge de Chesery was initially just a sturdy cowshed. Renovated in 1987, the bulding was transformed into a welcoming refuge. For over two decades, the refuge was run by the Es-Borrat family, until 2008 when they handed it over William Grenon. He, along with his vast herds of sheep, has been summering here since 1982. You'll find him still here today, caring for his sheep and offering his own local products and Valaisan specialties for sale at the refuge.

The mountain refuge comprises a 24-bed dormitory, a lounge area where you can finish your card games, and a bathroom with two showers available for use. The chalet is accessible in winter on foot, snowshoes and skis in 2 to 3 hours, depending on snow conditions, from the start at La Revenette, about 1km from the village of Vacheresse. Keys are available from the Café de la Mairie in Vacheresse.
