This hike lets you discover the Rhône’s river banks in the protected area of Ile du Beurre, the old part of the village of Condrieu and beautiful viewpoints of the market gardening plain of Ampuis and the steep vineyards of Côte-Rôtie. DETAILED ITINERARY 1 - START OF THE HIKE - From the car park, cross Route de Lyon and walk around the chapel. - Walk a few metres south along Route de Lyon, then turn left onto Chemin des Gravières. - Cross the railway line and continue along Chemin de l'Île de la Chèvre. - At the end, turn right to follow the river. 2 - NATURE WATCHING - Cross the bridge on the right over the river and follow the path on the other bank. - In the protected area of Île du Beurre, take the footpath rather than the ViaRhôna cycle path. - Cross the bridge over the Bassenon stream, turn left and head for the nature observation esplanade. 3 - THE RHÔNE AND CONDRIEU - Continue along the right bank of the Rhône towards the south, between a campsite and the river. - Before the end of the campsite, admire the river port of Les Roches-de-Condrieu on the other bank. - At the entrance to Condrieu, after a large pink mansion, explore the restored streets and squares. - Pass under the Rhône bridge and continue along the quay. - Follow the streets of Sauze then the Rhône quay on the left. 4 - HISTORIC CENTRE OF CONDRIEU - After two large plane trees, turn right onto Place du Raffour. - Follow the narrow passageway, go under the small stone railway bridge, then continue along Rue Henri Barbuse and cross the RN86 to Rue du Marché aux Fruits. - Take the small streets and covered passages (Rue Eugène Genet, Rue de la Croix, Grande Rue, Rue Saint-Martin) to reach the market square and Rue de Belfort. - Go up Rue Saint-Étienne under the old fortification gate and continue to Rue de la Visitation, then cross the Arbuel stream and take Rue Claude de Villard. 5 - RETURN TO THE HIGHLANDS - At the junction with Montée de la Caille, take the bridge on the right and continue along Rue Ecorcheboeuf. - At the end, turn left twice to reach Montée des Récollets. - At the cemetery, go down Montée de la Tour, then follow the footpath on Rue de la Croix de l'Oiseau. 6 - TOWARDS THE RHÔNE AND THE TRAILS - Follow Rue Cuvillière, then Rue de Croyez to the RN86. - Take Allée de la Bachasse to the banks of the Rhône and continue along the river, following the mountain bike signs to the tarmac car park. - Turn left twice, then join the D124 and take the mountain bike trail. 7 - ASCENT AND PANORAMIC VIEWS - Ascend via the Bassenon road, which offers beautiful views of the valleys behind Condrieu. - Join the mountain bike trail to the village of Semons, then follow the path to the viewpoint to admire the Ampuis market garden plain and the view of Vienne. - Walk around the church and, behind it, take the passage under the porch towards the path leading down into the vineyards. 8 - RETURN THROUGH THE VINEYARDS - Take the first path on the left to climb back up to the D124. - Descend the road, enjoying the terraced vineyards and the unobstructed view of the plain. - When you reach the D386 (formerly the RN86), return to the car park where you started. OFF THE CIRCUIT - Saut du Gier waterfall - A difficult and fairly long round trip, only to be attempted if you have the time and energy.

If you think mining is something to do with big data, it is time to have a day out at the Puits Couriot. Before it was here that miners went underground to dig coal. The site is now a listed Historical Monument and there's more fun to be had than in the old days. The museum tells the story of the Saint-Étienne's adventure with coal and even includes short trip down the pit. It's like being there for real, it shakes you up in every sense of the word. It gets off to a gentle start with a game of petanque and a local beer, then everyone goers into the park to get warmed up ready for a good bop. Just opposite, all this agitation does not stop the slag heaps from continuing to slowly consume themselves. And like the Maison de la Culture the church is also part of this equation in the ideal city. At first sight, the building can appear baffling. Everything about it is unexpected. The shape, the lights, the distribution of the spaces. Nothing (or almost nothing) suggests the presence of baby Jesus. And it has to be said that we are a world away from the original stable, even if inside there are 2 chapels to bring us back to prayer (one for weekdays and one for Sunday mass). A square base, a truncated cone, a concrete shell. Nothing conventional. Although the edifice now sits superbly at the centre of a UNESCO world heritage site, it once looked like it would never be built. Controversial, interrupted, modified, the project was only finalised in 2006. With no half-measures. And with great pomp and ceremony in front of the world's cameras. You have to be ready to assume your status as a star.

OK, so you're quite up to the Great Loop... Shame, but why not try the loop around Sainté? At Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds, it's the ribbon maker you have to call in on. More particularly, his house which is a museum/workshop that tells with passion the tale of this trade that marked the village between the 17th and 20th centuries. In Sorbiers, a short bucolic walk is organised in the Parc de Valjoly. Terrenoire is an electro pop group from Saint-Étienne that are making quite a name for themselves, but it's also the name of a neighbourhood of Sainté that you really shouldn't miss. Above all, a trip to the Château de la Perrotière is a must. It has a park that is well worth a wander on a nice day. At L'Étrat, you might be lucky enough to meet the green angel of Saint-Étienne football club coming out of the official training centre. So get your jersey on, buckle up and get going.

How about we take a step off the beaten track when it comes to murals? No more gardens or trompe l’œil farms. In Sainté (Saint-Étienne to you), we have Ella and Pitr's giants. These are not there just to cover something up or as decoration, they're meant to have meaning. Modular, Urban, Reactive (MUR). Those 3 words sum up the work of artists Ella and Pitr, who've been spreading their brand of insolence and poetic charm around the city since 2007. 2 Saint-Étienne natives whose paint pots and souls have come together to create a unique style. Once you get over the initial shock (they are pretty imposing, our little giants), you'll find you can't get enough of them. You'll end up looking out for them on every street corner. Unusual characters, outsize dimensions, colours galore and always a message. A real one. That's the secret of their appeal. And it works. With their funny faces and disjointed limbs (maybe they should hold back on the osteopathy), the giants are at home here. Sometimes lying down, sometimes standing, asleep or just looking thoughtful, no two are the same and yet they are always recognisable. On the façade at Ateliers Weiss, they've really gone to town, treating us (and what a treat!) to an indulgent chocolate-related fresco! Chocolate is so lovely! Why deprive yourself? The fresco illustrates perfectly all the pleasure we get out of consuming it. In short, whether you are well-versed in art or a novice, Ella and Pitr's style will speak to you. In the heart of a city focused on innovation and modernity, it's the least you could ask for. These are not so much morals as XXL-sized slices of life. They're original and caustic. We're on board. We love 'em.

Just a word of advice before you leave the train: prepare to be blown over by what you see. Born in Saint-Chamond, the artist Assan Smati lives and works in both Berlin and Saint-Etienne. He creates figurative art that resurrects ancient symbols. This piece is a monumental sculpture representing two blue horses in polyester resin standing on a tall pedestal. Riderless, sealed in immobility, these smooth, tight-skinned horses seem to arise out of nowhere to surprise and charm us with their esthetic perfection and pure lines.

Artist Philippe Million's multi-coloured tree stands proud on the forecourt of the Châteaucreux train station. Its metallic trunk stretches, as though reaching for the sun, out into branches covered in leaves of coloured plexiglass. Only the artist knows what kind of tree this is: is it a maple, is it a plane tree...? What is certain is that it's timeless, and playful, with its foliage of blues, reds, yellows and greens. The kind of tree that makes you want to stop, to pause for a moment of contemplation. If you take the time to look at it carefully, you might even see birds flying in to rest on its branches!

On the forecourt of the Châteaucreux station, you will also find a strange cast-iron forest of city bollards! This installation, named "Tempo" by its designer, looks like a bunch of nails hammered into the ground! Sometimes "at sitting height (height = 56 centimetres), they're a good place to rest, put your bag down, make a phone call. Spread out over the urban space or, conversely, clumped close to one another, they turn into meeting points. Other, taller bollards (height= 92 centimetres) are there to prevent cars from circulating. "

Pulsations is a sound installation in the heart of a tree. Spectators can hear it and feel it physically when they are in contact with the trunk of the tree.

Fondly known to local people in Saint-Étienne as the "Great Lady of Cours Fauriel" (Grande Dame du Cours Fauriel), the Ecole des Mines engineering school was created by Louis-Antoine Beaunier, a hyperactive entrepreneur if ever there was one! Among other things, he built the first railway in France, between Saint-Étienne and Andrézieux (1827). Many great names have emerged from the Ecole des Mines since it opened: Fourneyron (father of hydroelectricity), Boussingault (father of agrichemicals), Fayol (father of business management), Jean-Baptiste Marsaut (inventor of the miner's safety lamp, the Marsaut lamp), and several international political figures. The historic site of the Ecole des Mines dates from 1927, with its three neoclassical style buildings; the Rotonde was added in the 70s. Somewhat by chance, this place dedicated to popularising science has become an institution in its own right within the School, and the public can still come in to take part in workshops or attend talks on a variety of subjects. The Ecole des Mines has also renewed its educational methods and has now become an incubator for start-ups! Students have the possibility of launching a professional project based on their research subject even before they graduate. It certainly shakes things up when innovation changes its look!
