This forest walk makes a wide loop through the forest of Saint-Gobain, revealing some curiosities such as old underground quarries or the source of the Barberousse fountain near the old buildings of the Trou-Forcy. Ideal for discovering and observing the fauna and flora of the forest, this hike is for the whole family.

This is one of the most surprising and endearing places in the Laonnois region, combining dry moorland and wet peat bogs in the same area, ‘one of the richest peat complexes in terms of plant species in the Paris Basin, and perhaps even in all the plains of Western Europe’, according to the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels (CEN) des Hauts-de-France, to put it mildly! An atypical natural environment much studied by botanist and researcher Marcel Bournérias, with numerous microclimates, where it is not uncommon for the temperature to drop to around zero degrees in the middle of summer... A number of signposts on site will help you to appreciate the incredible diversity of flora and fauna. And this marvel is only a few cubits from Laon, so get out and explore!

One of the must-see sites in the Laonnois area (around 7 kilometres west of Laon) and easily accessible from the centre of the town, this pleasant and unusual walk will take you to a pile of sandstone blocks ‘balanced in a most curious chaos’, as mentioned in a report on the departmental inventory at the beginning of the 20th century.  It's a delight for young and old alike, and a popular spot for walkers who love to climb this fern-covered hill shaded by birch, oak and chestnut trees!

This short circuit follows for a while the Chemin des Creuttes, offering beautiful views of these ancient and astonishing troglodytic dwellings dug into the cliffs and rocky outcrops.

As geographer Yves Lacoste rightly pointed out in La Géographie, ça sert, d'abord, à faire la guerre [‘Among the places from which one can see a landscape, the one with the most beautiful view is almost always the most interesting in terms of military tactics’], it makes sense that the hills bordering the towns of Laniscourt and Mons-en-Laonnois were chosen at the end of the 19th century to build a military fort. It is not to discover the fort itself – as it is only open to the public on rare occasions – but to explore its surroundings that we invite you on this walk. The path is well signposted and will take you through beautiful woodland, so put on your walking shoes and grab your walking sticks, and don't forget to say hello to the donkeys as you pass by!

In the early 1950s, at the height of the Cold War, work began on upgrading Couvron Air Base to accommodate a US Air Force base. This was to be Laon-Couvron Air Base, which became fully operational in 1954. Many American servicemen and their families settled there: more than 200 of them settled in the new housing estate built on the outskirts of Laon and called "Marquette-sous-Laon", or cité Marquette. And it was because this nearby hill on the Crépy heights welcomed all these expatriates for picnics on Sundays that this site - formerly known as Mont Sérival - quite naturally received its name as a tribute to this American presence after the murder of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy at the end of 1963. They're gone now, but you can still take a stroll up this wooded hill and think about the atmosphere that must have reigned here some sixty years ago!

The path is rural, architectural or social, depending on whether it takes us from the creuttes to the grape harvesters, or from the church of Mons to that of Royaucourt, passing through Bourguignon, the village of the three Le Nain brothers, painters of the XVIIth century famous for their peasant portraits.

Departing from Crépy, a commune which had the sad privilege of hosting the "Grosse Bertha" in 1918, this great circuit takes us to discover the sandstone churches of this part of the Laonnois: Cerny, Bucy, Molinchart. After a detour in the woods of Sart-l'Abbé, the ascent of Mount Kennedy provides some beautiful escapes to the surrounding area.

The Via Francigena, meaning ‘Way of the Franks’, is an ancient medieval pilgrimage route linking Canterbury (Great Britain) to Rome (Italy).  Like the Way of St James, it was one of the main routes taken by Christian pilgrims to reach one of the three major pilgrimage centres. It stretches for nearly 2,000 kilometres, crossing four countries: Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Italy. The route is now recognised as a cultural itinerary by the Council of Europe.  Although there is no single, uniform signage (unlike the famous scallop shell), the route is marked differently in each country (in France, for example, it is identified as the GR® 145). The history of the Via Francigena is closely linked to the journey of Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury. In 990, he undertook a return journey from Rome after receiving the pallium (a band of white woolen cloth) from Pope John XV. He meticulously documented his itinerary, noting the 79 stages of his journey in a journal, which has become the historical reference for the Via Francigena. From the Middle Ages onwards, this route became an essential trade and military road, but also a major pilgrimage route, particularly around 1300, when the first Holy Years were proclaimed. The Via Francigena is a testament to the cultural unity of medieval Europe. After a period of decline from the 17th century onwards, it has been rediscovered in modern times and has now become a popular destination for pilgrims and hikers in search of adventure, spirituality, or simply slow tourism and nature (the route offers a variety of landscapes, from the green hills of Kent to the Swiss Alps, passing through the plains and historic villages of France and Switzerland, to the Tuscan landscapes and the Po Valley in Italy).  We invite you to explore the section of the route that passes through Laon before reaching Bruyères-et-Montébrault. So grab your walking sticks and shoes, and let's get going!

A little-known piece of history in Laon: the construction of a housing estate in Laon in the mid-1950s to accommodate 200 American families stationed at the nearby US Air Force base at Couvron. This housing estate, known as "Marquette-sous-Laon" or "Cité Marquette", was built in 1956. But why this name? Quite simply to pay tribute to a figure who left his mark on the history of both countries, Jacques Marquette. Born in Laon in 1637, he became a Jesuit priest and went to "New France" as a missionary, where he and his travelling companion Louis Jolliet discovered the source of the Mississippi River in 1673... And so it was that he became one of the leading figures in the young history of America, celebrated as he should be every year on 1st June - the day of his birth - with Marquette Day. So it was only natural that the authorities of the time chose this name to embody Franco-American friendship over the centuries. And it's just as natural that this tour will take you from the lower town, where the Marquette district still stands, to the upper part of Laon, where a Marquette stele is enthroned. Listed as a Historical Monument, the Baroque style Saint-Didier church of Asfeld is the strangest church in Champagne-Ardenne and even in France. It was built at the end of the 17th century on the site of the old church of the village according to the will of the Earl of Avaux Jean-Jacques III of Mesmes. Extravagantly shaped, designed by two talented architects: the Dominican Brother François Romain and Fleury, an architect who lived on the spot. The structural work was completed in 1683. The church was finished, received and blessed in 1685. The plan is quite original since it was imagined in the form of a viola da gamba. Entirely built in bricks, its architecture with colonnades, domes and cupolas is really bold. None of the walls of the building follows a straight line. The church has 138 pillars and columns, a length of 44.82 meters and an outer perimeter of 145 meters. The church also has a 7-stops organ built around 1900 by Clovis Renault. The monument was inaugurated on 5th July 1925. It pays tribute to the children of Herpy-L'Arlésienne who died for their country, and also, which is more unusual, to the "French soldiers who fell in battle in the Municipality."

Situated in the valley of Clignon and Ourcq at the bottom of the Orxois, the town of Crouy sur Ourq offers its green and quiet surroundings. Moors and forest form the setting for the town's heritage gathered arround the church Saint-Cyr and Saint Julitte. The fortress which watched over the village since the 15th century has mostly been destroyed except the Donjon de Houssoy witness to the medieval past. It's summit offers a panoramic view over village and surroundings.

Built around 1390, this keep is a monumental reminder of Crouy-sur-Ourcq's medieval heritage. Nestling at the bottom of the valley and built at the height of the 100 Years' War, it is the finest jewel in the crown of the Ourcq Valley. To delimit their vast territory, the Counts of Valois built defensive fortresses, often ostentatiously to show off their power and wealth. On the border with the lands of the Counts of Champagne, it was strategic to build this keep on the banks of the River Ourcq from the end of the 14th century. You can discover this keep, the only one in northern Seine-et-Marne and listed as a Historic Monument in 1962, during the European Heritage Days, or take a look at it from the outside during a walk in Crouy-sur-Ourcq.

Ideal for a short break and a group photo

This plot of land of 4 hectares, where more than 500 trees have been planted, is called the Promenade des Isles. It has been the site for different public events for several years. The most well-known is the Sainte Anne Fête, which has been held since 1805 at the end of July. For ten days the animation (the cavalcade, the fireworks display, the balls, the fairground attractions) attracts huge crowds, who come from all over the region. We must not forget to mention other public events, which have become traditional too like the horse show, the Foulées Rethéloises (cross-country running race), etc.. The first trees were planted on the meadow here in 1623 on a former cemetery. The town bought the neighbouring meadow (called the Cannevière) to extend the park in 1646. In 1775 the line of trees, which was in the middle, was cut down to create a central walkway. An entrance to the park from the town was made for pedestrians. Since this time the Promenade des Isles has always been used as a meeting place for local festivities.

The former town hall of Rethel, built in 1750, was destroyed on 1st September 1914 in the fire started by the invader on the night of 31st August 1914, as well as three quarters of the town and the archives of the town. The Town Council did not establish an order for the reconstruction of municipal buildings until 13th October 1922, priority being given to schools. Among the 11 projects presented for the new Town Hall, Mr Boulenger’s one (an architect from Reims) was chosen. The building, in Louis XIIIth style, measures 40 meters by 14 and its height is 40 meters too. The materials used (white stone from Vierzy, red brick from Dizy and blue slate) bring out the colours of the national flag on its façade.  The building started in April 1925 and finished in November 1931. The official inauguration took place on 30th April 1933. The monumental staircase at the centre of the façade leads onto a wrought iron portal, the official entrance to the building. The main reception room is entirely covered by paintings of Eugène Thiéry from Rethel. 

Built on the site of a Priory church, this new church is of Gothic style with a high nave and two aisles. After two centuries of conflicts, the inhabitants of Rethel obtained the demolition of their uncomfortable aisle to replace it by a nave of the same dimensions as the monks’ one: the church has therefore two large naves placed side by side. In 1531, a portal opened out onto the town was built. In 1614, the building of the enormous three–tiered tower started to replace the former steeple. Three levels were superimposed in the classical order (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian).  The Revolution and the two World Wars caused great damage to Saint Nicholas church. The restoration works undertaken by the Historical Monuments started in 1941 to finally end in 1994. Guided visits: Wednesdays from June to Sept. at 4pm on the forecourt. The monument is an allegory of Victory, framed by panels bearing the list of Rethel’s civilian and military dead.

Among those few buildings, only one is still intact and accessible to the public: the Auberge du Lion d'Or (the Golden Lion's Inn) in Juniville. Located in front of the house Verlaine used to rent, not far from his farm, the inn has become the Verlaine Museum today. In this accommodation "for walkers and riders", the furniture has not moved: time has stopped and the soul remained intact.  More than just a simple reminder of the poet, this 1500m² place will make you revisit his life and work thanks to a unique iconographic collection, a quality commented visit, the provision of his complete works (prose, poetry and letters) and, of course, the particular atmosphere we can feel as we walk in.  After your visit, you'll still have to discover the 1000m² old garden, the temporary exhibitions and the pub. INTERPRETATION TRAIL Departing from the Verlaine Museum, the Juniville interpretation trail invites you to discover the heritage of Juniville by walking in the footsteps of Paul Verlaine while retracing the life and work of the poet. 9 viewpoints have been created in the village, each of them with informative consoles, silhouettes, informative slides or poems whisperers. To go further in your stroll, your knowledge of Verlaine or simply have fun with your family, ask for the booklet "Fair day in Juniville with Verlaine" at the museum. Through its riddles, illustrations and anecdotes, you will learn more about the beautiful heritage of Juniville!
