Le Mas des Salicornes: your getaway in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

A bike loop to discover the Bouvine passion that animates the Camargue! Back to the Tourist Office, head left on Van Gogh Avenue, towards Aigues-Mortes. Go along the Grau d'Orgon and the Petit-Rhône, on the D38 for more than 10 km. 1- Turn right towards Pioch Badet. Continue following the direction of Pioch Badet. 2- At the intersection with the D570, turn left towards Pioch Badet. Continue for approximately 400 m and then take the first road to the right. 3 - At the intersection with the D85A, go to the right, Route de Cacharel, then continue for about 10 km to reach the starting point of the circuit, the Tourist Office of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer .

With endless ponds, fishermen and birds, freshwater marshes and high marshes marked by salt. From the Tourism Office, on the Van Gogh avenue, go through the village towards the Cacharel road (D85A) for 4 km. 1- Before the Mas de Cacharel, take the dirt road on the right for 11 km.2- At the Domaine de Méjannes, take the trail in the opposite direction and return to the starting point.

Admire the singular landscapes of the Camargue, born from the marriage of land and water. Back to the Tourist Office, head left on Van Gogh Avenue, towards Aigues-Mortes. Continue straight for 6 km and follow the Grau d'Orgon and the Petit-Rhône, on the D38. 1 - Turn left on the D85 and take the Sauvage ferry (information about ferry times at the Tourist Office). Continue on the D85 towards Aigues-Mortes and cross the small bridge that spans the Peccais Canal at Sylvéréal. 2 - At the intersection of the D58, turn right and continue for 350 m towards Arles. Take the bridge over the Petit-Rhône. 3- Do not miss turning right towards S33. Walk 2 km and reach the Astouin hamlet. Leave on the left the Astouin Castle estate. 4 - Take a right on the intersection with the D38. Go forward for 500 m. Turn left and continue on the D38b towards Pioch-Badet. VARIANT: a shorter variant is possible by going straight on towards the Cabanes de Cambon to join the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. 5 - Turn left, on the D570, towards Pioch-Badet and the Cacharel road. Follow Pioch-Badet, cross the village and take the road to Cacharel Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and return to the starting point by the D85A, along the several ponds that you will see on your left for 10 km.

Walk along the banks of the Petit-Rhône to observe the exceptional environment of this stream! Back to the Tourist Office, head left on Van Gogh Avenue, towards Aigues-Mortes. Continue straight for 6 km and follow the Grau d'Orgon and the Petit-Rhône, on the D38. 1 - Turn left on the D85 and take the Sauvage ferry (information about ferry times at the Tourist Office). Continue straight for about 1.5 km. 8 - Turn left before the roubine (stream). Continue the path that runs along the roubine. Pass the small bridge and continue to the right. Continue straight and turn right on the road to Cacharel and cross the village to regain the starting point of the circuit, the Tourist Office of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Real heart of the delta, discover the diversity of the Camargue, both in terms of landscapes and fauna and flora ... Back to the Tourist Office on Van Gogh Avenue, head right. At the roundabout, take the second exit and cross the village towards the Cacharel road for 4 km. 1 - Around the small parking, before the Cacharel farmhouse, take the track of the Five Gorges (said Méjanes) on the right. Continue for 11 km to the Méjanes estate. 2 - After the Méjanes estate, at the sign "give way", go right on the D37 and continue for 8 km. Go along the Vaccarès pond. Pass in front of the observation point of Mas Neuf Vaccarès (set up by the Camargue Regional Nature Park). After the observatory, continue towards Arles and Salin-de-Giraud. 3 - At the intersection of Villeneuve and the snack bar Les Salicornes, turn right on the C134 "Fiélouse" towards La Capelière. Cycle there for 14.5 km. Go along the pond Pass in front of La Capelière, Mas de Fiélouse, then Salin-de-Badon. 4 - Continue straight towards the dike to the sea. Continue on the trail to the Flamingo Observatory. 5 - At the observatory, turn right and take the dike to the sea towards the Gacholle lighthouse (trail accessible only on foot and by bike). Enter the Camargue National Nature Reserve. Pass the lighthouse and continue. Continue on the dike to the sea until Pertuis de Rousty. At Pertuis, continue straight to the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer which is located 6 km from there.

At the graus level (or passages), communication canals between the sea and the littoral ponds, you will find fish, towards the flooded sansouïre and the ponds or towards the sea. Migrating species include mullet, sea bass, but also sea bream, sole and especially eel. Born in the Sargasso Sea, she joined the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts after a long journey. She comes to grow in the coastal ponds or rivers where she spends several years of her life.

Classified Departmental Reserve, Imperial and Malagroy Ponds were acquired by the Departmental Council of Bouches-du-Rhone in 1964 to protect these fragile natural environments (2,770 ha) which are home to many species of birds. The fishing, a traditional activity in Camargue, is practiced in the Imperial reserve in a boat without motor which imposes the use, as formerly, of the "partygue" (pole). Fishermen are looking for shrimps, eels.

The Baroncelli marquis, famous character of Camargue life, gave to his manade the name of Manade Santenco which means, in Provençal, manade of Saintes-Maries. At the death of the marquis, his son-in-law Henri Aubanel then manages the Santenco manade.. On June 15, 1996, the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer inaugurate the Henri Aubanel bouvau, a circular enclosure where bulls are grouped after selection. At the death of Henri Aubanel, his son Pierre manages the manade that he renames Aubanel Baroncelli Santenco manade.

The arenas of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer were inaugurated in 1931 and can accommodate 4,500 people. They are built in hard material and have a circular shape.. Part of the arena collapsed in 1931, and was rebuilt in 1932. In 1985, they were redesigned by the architect André Marchetti. They offer three forms of bull races: the Camargue race, the Spanish race, and the rejón bullfight where the bull is fought by a rider, the rejoneador.

Originally, the race is a taurine game where animals and farmhands fight and play with the bull. Towards the end of the 19th century, this bullfighting game becomes less violent and only the man plays with the bull. We fix the attributes on the horns of the Camargue bull intended to be removed by the raseteurs dressed in white, now only protagonists of the race. A cockade is fixed on the horns of the bull and bonuses are awarded to the one who will pick up the attribute.

The creation of the marina, Port Gardian, dates back to the development of tourism in the Camargue in the mid-twentieth century. Built in June 1984, it has managed to keep its family atmosphere and its human dimension. This harbour has 380 rings. The village church, located not far from the port, 200 m from the wharves, is used as bitter, a landmark fixed and unambiguously identifiable. It guides boaters and fishermen sailing on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Camargue horse is a very old breed (1978) and would descend from the prehistoric horse of Solutré. Symbol of the Camargue, with a gray-white dress, short ears and a shaggy mane, it is small, about 1.45 m at the withers. His dark hair of birth takes its final colour white-gray when he is around 4 years old. Raised in the Camargue, he is the companion of the guardian and the working tool for raising bulls. Breeding and reproduction criteria are strict to preserve his breed.

On the course you will be able to see guardian huts. A traditional Camargue dwelling, the cabin has whitewashed walls and a sagne roof (marsh reeds). The architecture of these cabins is original: straight walls on all sides except the one exposed to the mistral (north-west) which has an apse (rounded in shape) to provide less wind resistance. At the top of this apse, there is usually a cross or a horn that once served to secure the hut to the ground on windy days. The oldest dwellings in the Camargue, which have persisted to this day, are these typical huts, called gardian huts, wrongly because they were used for farmers, shepherds and fishermen alike. Nowadays, they are built for the pleasure of living in a house of tradition.

On the edge of the Vaccarès pond nature reserve, the Domaine de Méjanes offers a privileged approach to the Camargue and its traditions, while respecting the environment. The domain of Méjanes is an old fortified residence of the Templars of the 13th century, part of the buildings of which date from the 11th century. Acquired by Paul Ricard in 1939, the Domaine is now an agricultural and tourist property which allows you to discover all the riches of the Camargue natural environment, on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike or with the little train. From the ruins of the buildings of this former royal saltworks, easily accessible, but with authorization, you can access magnificent discovery trails on 4.5 kilometers of hiking trails. Located in the heart of the Camargue Regional Natural Park at the gates of Arles and Saintes Maries de la Mer, this 4.5 hectare campsite benefits from choice halfway between the interior of Provençal lands (Baux de Provence, Saint Remy de Provence ) and the Mediterranean coast (Saintes Maries de la Mer).

If the village only had its church and a few houses in the 19th century, it is at the center of a territory that includes the most beautiful farmhouses in the Camargue: the painted farmhouse, the Cazeau tower farmhouse. This sector specializes in the breeding of herds of bulls and the cultivation of rice, including organic rice. There is also an important private research center on the flora and fauna of the marshes, the biological station of the Tour du Valat.
