This tour allows you to discover the Left Bank and the beauty of the landscapes of the Meuse Valley along the canal. Dead man’s hill (Le Homme-mort) has suffered some of the most deadliest combats just as much as those on the right bank. Today, it is a pleasant wooded mound that you can enjoy visiting. This course is perfect for a first try of the electric bike. Easy and with little difference in altitude, it will be perfect for a nice stroll with family or friends ! Limited in supply and manpower, the Kronprinz army cannot attack simultaneously on both banks of the Meuse. In order to obtain better results on the right bank, C.Q.G. German prepared the second phase of its offensive whose main objective was to take control of the hills of Mort-Homme (Dead man’s hill) and the Côte 304. These two natural observatories regulated the fires of the French artillery; it is in fact a crucial stake for the offensive continuation. The fighting raged on there for weeks, destroying villages of Esnes-EN-ARGONNE and Chattancourt. Rapidly, the battle peaks became untenable volcanoes; suicidal assaults fade to move on to countless murderous gunshots . To protect themselves from bombing, both sides took refuge on the hillside, digging tunnels. On August 20, 1917, the generals Guillaumat and Pétain begin a to put victorious offensive which has the effect four German divisions attached to the sector Mort-Homme-cote 304 to flight. To the thousands of prisoners, material and armaments captured, must also be added more than twenty thousand victims whose units appear on the current monuments. In this inferno, the village of Cumières will disappear completely and will never be rebuilt.

The Faubourg-pavé Necropolis is a World Heritage Site The Faubourg Pavé necropolis is located east of Verdun in the direction of Etain, Metz, Battlefield. The necropolis contains 5516 bodies including 4852 of the First World War. 14 Russian graves, 1 Rumanian, 1 Luxemburgish, 1 Indochinese, 1 Chinese. A large cross stands in the middle of the cemetery around which lie the remains of the 7 unknown soldiers (Carré des 7 Inconnus). These 7 + 1 remains were presented on November 10, 1920 at the Unknown Soldier's Choice Ceremony. Private Thin pointed to a coffin that went to Paris representing the sacrifice of a generation for his country. The remaining 7 remained in Verdun. Entrance avenue Joffre side, 6 Skoda brand guns are exposed.They were taken from the Germans on the eastern front. A monument carved by Leon Cuvelle in homage to the shot and deported of World War II is also visible by this entry, as well as a monument erected in honor of the Airmen.

A historical and natural visit To discover this remarkable beech tree, take the D112 road from Verdun and walk for around a quarter of an hour to forest plot 569. This path takes you through a forest steeped in history, offering an enriching experience for nature and history enthusiasts alike. Built in the 14th century, it forms part of the Grand Rempart de Verdun. Shaped like a horseshoe, it is also known as the Tour du Puty. The name "Plaids" comes from the judicial hearings held here in the Middle Ages. SIGHTSEEING : > The old ramparts along the Canal du Puty and the Tour de l'Islot. > The Canal du Puty runs beneath the Tour des Plaids. This is one of the many canals running from the Meuse to Verdun. These canals are a reminder of the time when tanners' workshops, working for the army, represented a major part of Verdun's industrial activity.

The Monument to General Sarrail is a statue erected in honor of French General Maurice Sarrail, an iconic figure of World War I. Unveiled on October 18, 1936, this bronze statue depicts Sarrail in uniform, standing and holding a military map, symbolizing his strategic role during the war. It is located on Place de la Nation in Verdun, a highly symbolic location due to its association with the Battle of Verdun, one of the most significant episodes of the conflict. Maurice Sarrail is recognized for his command during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, where he played a crucial role in defending the city. Although his management of the battle was controversial, his commitment and determination made him a respected figure. The monument is a testament to the city of Verdun's gratitude to its defenders and the importance of commemorating their sacrifices. The current statue replaces the one that was melted down during World War II. In 1942, the German occupation authorities melted down the original statue. After the war, a committee was formed to replace it, and the new statue was unveiled in 1959. Accessible free of charge, this monument is an essential place of remembrance for visitors wishing to understand the history of Verdun and honor the memory of those who fought for France.

Erected in 1928, the War Memorial dedicated to the Citizens of Verdun is built inside the La Chaussée demi-lune, part of the fortifications constructed by Marshal Vauban in the 17th Century. The Memorial occupies the site of the former military slaughter-house destroyed in 1916. The statues represent the five arms of service of the French Army engaged in the battle of 1916. From left to right we can make out: a cavalryman, an Engineer sapper, an infantryman, also known as a “poilu”, an artilleryman and a reservist. These five soldiers form a human wall symbolising the motto of the City: “They will not pass”. On the base of the monument are inscribed the names of the soldiers from Verdun who died in the First and Second World Wars. See also: A statue of General Sarrail facing the monument, and a bust of General Mangin fixed on the rampart wall to the right. NOTE : The patriotic calendar of Verdun is well-filled, and among others, the commemoration ceremonies of 1st and 11th November take place in front of this monument.
