In Verdun, the Meuse River branches out into a multitude of small canals that wind their way through historic neighborhoods, creating a veritable maze of water and greenery. Far from being mere river branches, these canals now offer a unique charm to strolls through the heart of the city.
- The Saint-Airy Canal takes you to a quiet old neighborhood where you can still feel the atmosphere of the mills of yesteryear.
- The Puty Canal borders the suburb of the same name and runs alongside old gardens that remind us of the importance of farming in the city.
- The Minimes Canal and the Augustins Canal evoke the presence of the religious orders that lived in Verdun: they flowed at the foot of the convents, irrigating gardens and orchards.
- The Récollets Canal, next to the cloister and its Gothic arcades, invites contemplation, between religious heritage and reflections on the water.
- The Saint-Vanne Canal, undoubtedly the most picturesque, crosses the medieval heart of the city and offers superb views of old stone houses and footbridges.
- Finally, the Brachieul Canal recalls the artisanal past of this lively neighborhood, where water once powered mills and workshops.
Strolling along these canals, you will discover another side of Verdun: a charming water town where history is reflected at every turn, in the soothing calm of the current and the glimmering old facades.
