Discover the head of the Danay, panorama and orientation tables at the cross overlooking the Aravis, the Refuge du Danay. Pleasant varied itinerary in case of strong heat. Departure at Le Grand-Bornand (skating rink) follow Tête du Danay by the Danay d'en Haut. Behind the skating rink, take a forest path to pass the Bois de Dodes then the Dodes and reach Le Macheret. Turn right towards Les Frasses Girard d'en Haut, follow the path then the road for 300 m, at the car park take the path on the left and join Le Danay d'en Haut. From the chalet go up to the Tête du Dnay and go back to La Croix. Go down towards Le grand-Bornand via Bois de la Pezerette following the ridge. At Frête turn left to go down to the Bois de la Pézerette. From there join Frasses Jacquier then Le Macheret. Return to Le Grand-Bornand by the path taken on the outward journey.

Easy accessible Forest with easy access and a view of the village and its church tower The trail climbs a few bends in the woods and soon crosses a small creek on a path secured with chains. The ascent continues in the wood along a clearing to cross to walk back down to the Village while enjoying the view. Stages : Clairière des Dodes / Ferme de la Nature par le bois des Dodes.

The path goes through a wood and crosses a clearing from where you will enjoy a panoramic view of the village and discover the traditional habitat.

This route allows you to visit some of the Aravis’ traditional mountain chalets, some of which are still used to make cheese. The path goes through lush meadows surrounded by magnificent scenery. A cow’s life can’t be all bad! COL DES ANNES - JUNCTION below GRAMUSSET: 1 hr 25 min The track, which is part of the “Tournette-Aravis” long-distance footpath (GR de Pays), starts by going up through the meadows behind the farms. Be careful after rain, as the ground can be very slippery. Continue up the path to the Tête des Annes, at the top of a chairlift. The climb is steep, but the view of the narrow Confins Valley is superb. Follow the track on the left-hand side of the crest to the Col de l'Oulettaz. Do not take the dangerous path along the top of the crest. The magnificent hanging meadows on the left are in the Reposoir Valley, whose village houses a former Charterhouse. Pointe Percée (2750 m) can be seen straight ahead. Take care crossing the limestone pavement. This section should be avoided when it is wet or foggy. Follow the GRP waymarkers. A signpost indicates the climb to the Gramusset mountain hut and the descent to the Chalet de Planet and Les Confins. JUNCTION below GRAMUSSET - CHALET DE PLATTUY: 55 min Go down the beautiful path to the Chalet du Planet. Smile, the marmots are watching you! After the farm at Le Planet, turn right towards the stream. Cross the stream and go down the path through the meadows on its right bank. Go below a field of willow herb and a cluster of spruce trees. The Chalet de Plattuy, with its wood-shingle roof, overlooks the valley. CHALET DE PLATTUY - COL DES ANNES: 1 hr 15 min Above Plattuy the path joins a wide track. Follow it leftwards for 300 m, then head up to the Col de Borneronde along a pleasant forest path lined with bilberries and raspberries. When you get to a track, turn right and go up to the pass. Continue along the track from the Col de Borneronde back to the Col des Annes. Option: It is possible to follow a sportier way back to the Col des Annes by turning right at the Col de Borneronde and taking the steep but very pretty path to the Tête des Annes (1 km). Turn left and go back down the outward trail to the Col des Annes.

The Col de la Colombière has featured in the Tour de France 20 times since 1960. It’s southern side, above the resort of the Grand-Bornand, is much less formidable than the climb from Scionzier. Gradient: 6.5%

A 2h30/3h electrically-assisted mountain bike outing through the Aravis mountain scenery at intermediate (medium) All Mountain level. The route takes in small tarmac roads, 4*4 tracks and technically accessible singles, covering a distance of around 20-25km and a climb of around 800-900m.

The original cemetery was situated for a long time immediately around the church. In the mid-XX century, it had to be relocated so that a new village square could be built in front of the Tourist Office, the Town Hall and the church. Until the mid-XIX century, the cemetery was located just below the church, on the Aravis mountain side. In 1816/17, following very heavy snowfall, the church had to be rebuilt. During work on the new foundations, bodies were discovered all around the church. In 1850, the Prefect ordered that the cemetry be moved. To pay for the work, former residents of Le Grand Bornand who had left the village donated 2400 pounds and a further 660 pounds was raised by the villagers themselves. The new cemetery was relocated to a field just opposite of the main door of the church and it was inaugurated in 1854. The original site became free for the building of the first village hall. By the end of the 1950's, winter tourism was developping fast in Le Grand Bornand. There was pressure to design a more functional village square to serve the needs of the Town Hall and the Tourist Office. Building the new square also enabled the development of shops and restaurants. At the same time, the 1921/1923 war memorial, which used to be beside the main road, was relocated to be beside the new cemetery site. This is how the cemetry came to be moved once again, between 1957 and 1963, to its present site beside the Borne river and on the road below the Tourist Office.

Authentic house and a model of 19th century rural architecture, the Heritage House, the ecomuseum of Grand-Bornand, bears witness to the traditions and know-how that forge the identity of the village. Rearranged as it was at the end of the 19th century, the Heritage house invits you to enter in the yeasteryear inhabitants' life and to discover how traditional houses, built for families and animals, were organised.

After 60 years of building work, undertaken and financed by the local community,it was consecrated in 1877. Built in the neo-gothic style of the XIX century, the architecture is typical of the golden age of the Catholic church. From the XI to the XIII century, a small chapel stood within the parish. This chapel was served by the church in Thônes. According to descriptions given by the Bishop of Geneva during his pastoral visits in the XV century, the church was made of wood. In 1569, the church burned down and the 4 bells melted. As the baptismal fonts and the onion-shaped steeple show, it was rebuilt in the typical XVII century Baroque style. The tinplated steeple (today it is made of stainless steel) shows the influence of Savoyard migration to Germanic countries. In 1794, during the French Revolution, the church was plundered, just as in parishes all over France. The steeple was demolished and 3 of the 4 bells were melted down. The oldest bell, dating from 1767, still remains. At the beginning of the XIX century, the church fell into ruin and finally collapsed under the weight of heavy snow in 1816. Renovation of the church lasted between 1817 and 1877. The onion-shaped steeple was rebuilt between 1820 and 1845. Certain items are registered in the inventory of Historic Monuments as heritage articles (the baptismal fonts, the pulpit, the stalls and a painting). It was painted by artists from the Val Cesia in Piémont, the Gilardi and the Pellegrini. The 44-pipe Giroud organ was inaugurated in 1988. The visit is free but in summer, the visit of the church is included in the tour of the Village. Here are the furniture you can see in the Church : - Classified paintings : The virgin giving the Holy Rosary to St Dominic (18th century); and painting of the Sacred Heart (19th century) - Bronze bell from 1767 - Pews in walnut - Pulpit carved in 1827 showing the four evangelists - Altarpiece (17th century) representing the Dormition of Mary - Organs (made by Giroud) with 40 pipes dating from 1988 - The classified baptismal carved in 17th century and 1829 - Altar of 1995 with side panels representing two fundamental aspects of the economic life of the parish : the tourism and agricultural life - Wooden crucifix

The weekly market at the Grenette, the old grain market of Le Grand Bornand, characterizes the heart of the old town square. All sorts of concerts and events also take place here, such as concerts given by the local brass band and many local celebrations. The first mentions of a Grenette, or grain market, date back to 1569, when the whole village was burned down. There is evidence that there was a new building again in 1742 and it was rebuilt several times, first of all in 1797 and also in the years following 1870. It would seem that the Grenette was a wooden structure and this would explain why it often collapsed, particularly under the weight of the snow at the beginning of the XIX century. It was only rebuilt towards the end of the XIX century, when important work on the roads and the church took place. In 1954, the Grenette was rebuilt under the direction of an architect named Jacquet. Nearly 200 hewn stones were laid by the Calzorali company from Saint Jorioz and the wooden framework was made by the Seguet company in Annecy. In the stone lower section there used to be a public washouse, the public toilets and a store room for the village road-mender. This foundation layer has been preserved. In the spring of 2013, the Grenette was once again dismantled, although the stone base with the arcades and the diamond-shaped apex have been preserved.

Standing above the village of Le Grand Bornand, with panoramic views over the Aravis chain, the chapel of Le Nant Robert is well worth seeing. It was founded in 1762 and renovated on several occasions during the course of the XX century. The chapel was founded in 1762 by the residents of Le Nant Robert. It is placed under the patronage of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary, and of Saint John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus. With the exception of the overhanging roof-edge just above the main entrance, added during the XX century to protect from humidity, the chapel still looks much as it was in the old days. There are two little windows on each side of the doorway. Several renovations took place during the 1950's (1955 and 1958), also in1994. The chapel interior was repainted in 2000. The chapel has a steeple with a quadrilateral base. Hanging in the steeple is the bell, cast in the Meunier foundry in Chambéry in 1819. François Rey was the bell's godfather and Marie-Justine Rochet its godmother. Inside the chapel the central painting, dating from the XVIII century, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint François de Sales, who was Bishop of Annecy during the XVII century. Above it is a crowned Virgin and Child, surrounded by cherubims. There is also a statue of the Virgin and Child with two columns on either side, two candelabras and two kneeling cherubs. Above is a brightly painted altar cross, probably dating back to the XVIII century. Finally, you will notice the impressive Stations of the Cross, drawn in Indian ink. The artist is believed to have been Napoléon Thom.

We invite you to discover this magnificent valley, the birthplace of the Reblochon cheese, through which the Borne river flows between the gentle alpine slopes of the Lachat mountain, forests and the steeper rocky outcrops at the foot of the Aravis range. You can walk through the hamlets with their hundred year old chalets, roofed with wooden shingles, their chapels and the many farms, evidence of thriving agriculture.

Legend has it that this pretty waterfall on the Nant du Chinaillon, running down a narrow gorge for about thirty meters, is the place where the very first couple of Bornandins met... A walk more than a hike, pleasant and refreshing in the shade of the beech forest of Grand-Bornand Chinaillon. The waterfall is accessible in about 20 minutes walking.
