A short loop allowing you to discover the Fierloz Plateau from Artemare. The Fierloz Plateau walk, located in the commune of Artemare, is an easy and accessible hike for everyone in the heart of a remarkable natural site in the Bugey region. This approximately 4 km loop allows you to discover a typical karst plateau, characterized by its lapiaz, fissures carved into the limestone by water over time. The trail winds through undergrowth, boxwood, and pine trees, offering a peaceful and natural setting ideal for a family walk. Several viewpoints dot the route, notably near the Virgin of Fierloz, from where you can admire the landscapes of the Valromey valley and the Grand Colombier mountain range. Classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, the site is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with more than 200 plant species recorded on this plateau, unique in the region. Hiking circuit following the course of the river, the Séran and allowing the discovery of the site of the Virgin of Fierloz and the Cerveyrieu waterfall. This 2.5 hour walk will allow you to discover two sites labelled as Sensitive Natural Spaces in the Ain department: - the Fierloz massif, a 74-hectare limestone plateau with lapiaz formed 140 million years ago, labelled a Sensitive Natural Area by the Ain department. From the top of the statue of the Virgin of Fierloz, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the landscapes of the southern Bugey. - The Cerveyrieu waterfall, a spectacular waterfall from which you have an exceptional view of the mountains. A short hike along the Séran River, between a dizzying waterfall and a canyon carved by water, in the heart of Valromey. This hike is a shorter version of the Thurignin Gorges hike. This family-friendly hike follows the Séran River from the Cerveyrieu Waterfall to the Thurignin Gorges along a mostly shaded trail that runs alongside the river. The route takes you first to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the waterfall, which is about sixty meters high, and then up to the gorges, where erosion has carved potholes and pools into the limestone rock. An ideal route for a short outing to explore two iconic geological features of southern Bugey. Highlights: Cerveyrieu Waterfall (approx. 60 m high) and its overhanging viewpoint Thurignin Gorges and their giant’s kettles Views of Artemare, southern Bugey, and the Dent du Chat Good to know: The flow of the Séran River varies greatly depending on the season: impressive after snowmelt or heavy rains, almost nonexistent during summer droughts The waterfall is accessible only from above (no access to the base of the fall) The trail is passable, but watch out for slippery spots near the rocks, especially when walking with young children or pets

From the hamlet of Charaillin in the commune of Chavornay, an ascent to Chanduraz at an altitude of 1218 metres on the Grand Colombier massif: at the belvedere, a very open view on the Valromey side; a connection is possible with Béon. This hike, which does not go through the summit or the Grand Colombier pass, offers the possibility of discovering more private paths and panoramas that are inaccessible by car. The steady climb of 5 kilometers for an elevation gain of 800 meters will reward you with a breathtaking view of the Lac du Bourget, the Alps, the Rhône river from the rock of Chanduraz. The climb is mainly in the coolness of the forests of the Grand Colombier. (Be careful, the southern end of the rock is inaccessible). The hike follows the Parnaud nature trail on its lower part, you will discover the wine-growing tradition of the village of Chavornay: low walls, stone stairs, barns and old plots testifying to this recent past. Hike in the local nature of Valromey following a peaceful river, an emerald source and several local heritage monuments. Smooth climbs in the forest, not many cars, this is the ideal route to enjoy nature and discover Valromey and Plateau d'Hauteville. No steep parts on this route but regular climbs on quiet roads. The most difficult climb is the col de la Rochette which is a 2nd categorie climb from Ruffieu and a 3rd categorie from Hauteville-Lompnes. The road above Virieu le Grand has a few lovely point of views above the vineyards. Several mountain ranges can be seen on clear days.

Hike starting from Virieu-le-Grand leading to the impressive Clairefontiane waterfall. Hike to discover the historic center of Virieu-le-Grand by going up the Arène river to the majestic Clairefontaine waterfall located in the forest. Unlike some other waterfalls, the flow of Clairefontaine never stops, even during periods of drought. From the centre of Virieu-le-Grand, follow Route d'Hauteville to the Chemin de Clairefontaine. You can cut the hairpins that wind up to the foot of the waterfall. The circuit then crosses the Chanille bridge before splitting into two more or less direct return options. A 320 m² discovery area, consisting of 5 themed rooms, the Maison du marais offers a modern and interactive museography (videos, interactive terminals, etc.) to help you understand the fauna and flora of the marsh, its history, its formation and its current management. The Maison du marais aims to prepare for a visit to the nature reserve or to complete it. It is also an information point, a nature shop and a refreshment bar.

At the foot of the Grand Colombier, the Musée du Bugey-Valromey invites you to take a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with its Renaissance house featuring architecture typical of the region and its parkland in the heart of the countryside. Located in a carefully preserved Renaissance-style house, at the foot of Grand Colombier Mountain, the Bugey-Valromey Museum will transport you through centuries of Bugey life, from the 19th century to today. The kitchen and scullery with a slopstone sink, the bedroom, cellar and outhouse and the dovecotes provide the stage for reconstructions and displays of the museum’s collections. The area’s history, significant people, daily life, geography and wildlife, means of transportation and landscapes are just some of the main themes presented in the exhibitions. Wood has always been, and continues to be, one of the area’s most important resources. An underlying theme of the visit, wood is featured in several of the museum’s collections, such as in the workshops which showcase the tools and material used in woodcraft professions (e.g. lumberjacks, coal producers, wheelwrights, coopers and woodturners). More impressive yet is the collection of turned artwork produced by 30 international artists, on display in the Renaissance house. Bugey also has a remarkable natural landscape of green countryside and rolling hills - the view from the museum illustrates this. It is therefore no surprise that artists have always been inspired by its landscapes; and hikers by its valleys. From April to November, the museum calendar is marked by an excellent cultural programme that brings together quality and conviviality, offering something for all tastes and all ages!

The EARL Domaine Monin is housed in an old Savoyard fortified manor house in the village of Vongnes. Here M. There are also 4 different types of sparkling wine available made using both the méthode ancestral and méthode traditionnelle techniques in addition to both Fine and Marc de Bugey digestives. The Musée des Traditions Vigneronnes (Museum of Winegrowing Traditions) houses one of the largest and most beautiful collections of ancient tools (over 1300) and objects related to the work of the vine and wine. The Musée des Traditions Vigneronne was born of the Caveau Bugiste's desire to preserve the memory of the gestures and skills of yesteryear. The exhibits come from the Caveau's own research, as well as from a personal collection built up over more than 20 years by Jean-Pierre Melin, an equally enthusiastic Bugiste. - Fossous, départoirs and échaudeuses recall the patient stages leading up to the grape's blossoming. - Rassiots, gauges and presses illustrate the skilful winemaking process. - Verdondaines, jabloirs and dolloires evoke the perfect mastery of the cooper. Many of these objects date from the 18th century, and some are rare and even unique. Impressive waterfall about sixty meters high overlooking the hamlet of Cerveyrieu in the town of Artemare. Pots, basins, canyon and impressive waterfall make up this diverse site. The Cerveyrieu Waterfall is one of the "geological curiosities of Valromey" located along the "Séran" stream, labeled Sensitive area by the Department of Ain in 2017 along with the Gorges de Thurignin, and the canyon of Cerveyrieu , Real natural and landscape jewels of the Department of Ain. The waterfall offers a very beautiful view of the Colombier and the Alps. To admire it from above, take the D31, “sous Chassin” (between Champagne and Don). The turbulent waters of the Séran, a river classified as the first category for trout fishing, above the village of Artemare. It is forbidden to bathe in the bed of the Séran and to picnic on the banks of the Séran. Animals accepted on leash only. Please note that the flow of the Séran river varies greatly over the seasons, it happens that the waterfall can be dry during the summer.

Karstic plateau covering several hectares, vast slabs criss-crossed by deep fissures carved out by seeping water. A beautiful walk through box and maritime pine. This pleasant place of walk, occupied since the year 58, is constituted of many lapiaz, dug by the infiltrations of water and shelters more than 200 species of plants. From la Vierge, in the middle of the maritime pines and the box trees, a very beautiful sight is offered to you. The statue was erected in 1896 to commemorate the 14th centenary of the baptism of Clovis. This site is one of 32 sites labelled "Espaces Naturels Sensibles" (ENS) in the department of Ain. Within the framework of the "Schéma départemental des espaces naturels sensibles" (SDENS 2012-2017), these environments are intended to be preserved, enhanced and open to the public, thus offering exceptional support for the promotion of the department. Geology : Limestones are more or less impure lime carbonates. They are soluble in water containing carbonic acid. It penetrates easily into the cracked limestone layers. This phenomenon characterizes the karstic relief. The lapiaz: as a result of climate change, erosion and human activities, limestone dissolves according to its purity, forming dissolution slits (grikes). They separate tables of lapiés (clints) whose shape and surface are related to the degree of cracking. On this site, these lapiaz form steps. They are called "structural benches". The flora : Crustaceous lichens colonize the bare or calcareous surface more or less flat. Then follow the black gelatinous lichens. Perennial lawn of limestone slabs: crassulent plants (orpines and basophilic plants). Dry grass: erect bromine, orchids and other protected plants. Calcareous blood geranium hems. The stable xerophilous saskatoon buxaie with oval leaves and boxwood. Wildlife : The site is home to exceptional wildlife. 21 species of birds nest on the massif, such as the Nightjar, the reptile-loving Circaète Jean Le Blanc and the red partridge. Protected species populate the site such as the red squirrel, 8 species of bats, 40 insects, reptiles and amphibians. Bring hiking boots to walk around the site Recall all fires are prohibited.

Impressive intermittent resurgence in a Sensitive Natural Space. The Groin spring is one of the geological curiosities of the Valromey, awarded the "ENS" label by the Ain department in 2016. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites with the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed in such a way as to preserve the biodiversity they host, and developed for opening to the public (barring exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). The water that flows out of the basin comes from underground streams formed by the infiltration of rainwater from the Haut-Valromey and Plateau de Retord. Depending on the period (dry or rainy), the basin is more or less full of water, or even empty. The differences in level are impressive. In the rainy season, the siphon opens with a frightening roar, and the water flow at the siphon outlet can reach 5m3 per second. To protect this sensitive natural area, it is forbidden to swim in the groin or picnic on the site or along the banks. Pets allowed on leash only.

An unspoiled site nearly half a kilometre in length, where the Séran has hewn out a succession of potholes linked by deep, narrow clefts in the rock down which roaring water cascades. This site is part of 32 sites labeled Sensitive area in the Ain department. A stone pavement forms a bridge over one deep pothole, providing access to the path to the former railway station of Vieu. The gorges are located close to the hamlet of Belmont, and are part of a hiking trail named Les gorges de Thurignin. It is forbidden to bathe in the bed of the Séran and to picnic on the banks of the Séran. Animals accepted on leash only. A poetic name for an idyllic setting. Located on the Arène river, the Clairefontaine waterfall puts on a magical show in winter when it glistens with frost and icicles. Honoré D’urfé described it in le Sireine, a poem about his loves of times gone by.

The lake of Virieu offers a large beach, games for children and many picnic areas in the shade of the trees. Swimming is supervised in July and August. Swimming is supervised from July 1 to August 31, every day, every afternoon. Snack bar "Un Air de Vacances" available all summer: - July to August: daily from 10am to 9pm, on Saturdays until 11 pm. The Lavours Marsh is one of the last remaining giant marshlands in continental Western Europe. Located near Ceyzérieu in the shadow of the Grand Colombier the marsh covers an area of 500 hectares and is traversed by a wooden footbridge 1.2km long. The Lavours Marsh was declared a Nature Reserve in 1984 to protect the rich and diverse flora and fauna that exists there. Visitors can view this remarkable marshland from a 1.2km long wooden pathway on stilts that allows access right to the very heart of the marsh. All along this pathway there are signs in both French and English that give explanations about the various plants and animals that exist in the marsh. The pathway is accessible to wheelchair users and all the signs are available in Braille for the visually impaired. The only entrance to the Lavours Marsh is located in the hamlet of Aignoz, here you will find plenty of free parking and the Maison du Marais, an interpretative centre that explains the history and life of the marsh. Each year at the Maison du Marais between April and October a program of various events is scheduled that allows the public discover more about the marsh’s flora and fauna and heritage. To access to the swamp, a mandatory parking is at visitors disposal free of charge, at the entry of Aignoz hamlet. It is important de respect the natural reserve regulation: dogs and gathering forbidden. The stilt walk is accessible to people with reduced mobility with the help of an accompanying person.

The summit of the Grand Colombier offers exceptional views of the Belledonne and Mont-Blanc massifs, the Bugey region, the Rhône, Lac du Bourget, Lac d'Annecy and Lac du Léman. The "giant of Bugey" offers a variety of sites and landscapes to admire: forests, meadows, barns, the ruins of the Chartreuse d'Arvières and panoramic views of the Alps. This massif has all the characteristics of the Jurassic era: firstly, alternating mountains and valleys: the mountain is surrounded to the west by the Valromey depression and to the east by the Lavours and Chautagne marshes. It reappears as a "mollard" at Lavours and Vions. The limestone rock, carved out by heavy rains, has given rise to picturesque sites such as the Thurignin gorges in Valromey, the Cerveyrieu waterfall near Artemare, the Groin canyon, etc... You can drive through the massif on the D120 from Culoz (where the climb is particularly spectacular), Anglefort, Virieu-le-Petit or Lochieu. There is a parking lot near the Iron Cross overlooking the massif.

The Relais de Thézillieu is a restaurant situated in the village of Thézillieu that offers a menu based on authentic "produits de terroir" according to the seasons, from all over France and Bugey in particular to create some mouthwatering dishes. Chef and his staff suggest you a cuisine based on local products of real quality. As Pascal himself says “I love to work with local products and serve a cuisine which is both tasty and generous”. On the menu you will find such delicacies as quail, charolais beef, Bugiste charcuterie, foie gras, and homemade terrines. Additionally there is an extensive wine list that includes some of the finest AOC Bugey wines and other outstanding labels from the best vineyards in France. The Relais de Thézillieu has a small terrace that has room for 15 people with space for another 28 patrons in the main dining room.
