From the small village of Bény, go to meet two Bresse manors and their mills, former agricultural domains. A route in the paths of Bresse and its string of woods (Malaval, Châtelet...) The most southerly commune in the canton, Bény has preserved and developed the Bresse bocage that you'll discover on this walking tour. From south to north, the Sevron, a river full of fish, offers anglers plenty to indulge their passion. Bény is also home to the famous Bresse PDO poultry. You'll recognize it in the meadows by its white plumage, bluish legs, red crest and barbels, and white auricles. A festival is dedicated to it in Bény on the 1st Sunday in July, a date you'll want to reserve to savor its incomparable taste. The Garavand farmhouse was transferred in 1996, following the construction of the A39 motorway, and now serves as the town hall and village hall. This typical 12th-century building in the center of the village is typical of Bresse housing: half-timbered, carrons (the local name for bricks) and cob. You can also admire a wonderfully preserved mill in the hamlet of Marmont.

It is not a farm but a noble residence, center of the fief of Marmont, possession of the Duchy of Burgundy. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Manor was reduced to a simple farm. The farm buildings date from 1840 and the original building from 1434. Perched on a small hillock, facing North-South, its most neat facade is turned towards the Revermont. This imposing residence (31 m long, 11 m wide, 10 m high) has a floor, a sign of its seigneurial origin.

A mix of wide, undergrowth paths and the vast expanses of the western Revermont. A loop under the crests of the Lomont before discovering a sleeping beauty, the chapel of Montfort, solitary under the ruined walls of its castle. Brush up against the Comtois border before a short, stony descent from the Plain Champ pass to Mont Chevalet. Unexpectedly, there's a small retreat below the village of Courmangoux, from which emerges the Vauchère spring, the last karstic sign of the Revermont massif, before the Bresse trails and the return to the Grange du Pin lake. Base VTT Espace Revermont - FFCT signposting - n°1 - black Pass over the dyke and around the lake. Go under the farmhouse and up the path towards Cuisiat. At the Musée du Revermont, turn left just before the church, then right up the Bois de la Côte to the Chapelle de Montfort. Go straight back down to Cuisiat and turn right towards La Ferrolière. At La Ferrolière, go down to Pressiat and take the road up to the summit of Mont-Myon, passing the paragliding school and climbing site. At the summit of Mont-Myon (listed site - 360° panorama), descend to the col de plain-champ (north face). Just before the "Revermont" stone (at the pass), turn left towards Chevignat. Cross the RD 52, past the Chevallet lake and the Chevignat chapel, to reach Courmangoux via Mont Chevallet. In front of the church, turn right onto a steep path leading to the Vauchère spring and the Moulin de la Roche. Continue along the lake to the road. Turn left at the crossroads and follow the barn. 2nd right, past the Chagnettes farm. Enter the forest, turn left, then right. At Carisse farm, turn left and follow the road to the Grange du Pin leisure park.

At the Revermont Museum, turn left just before the church, then right to go up the hillside wood to the Montfort chapel. Go straight back down to Cuisiat and turn right towards La Ferrolière. At La Ferrolière, go down to Pressiat and take the road that goes up to the top of Mont-Myon, passing the paragliding school and the climbing site. At the top of Mont-Myon (classified site - 360° panorama) go down to the pass on the same level (north face). Just before the "Revermont" stone (at the pass), turn left towards Chevignat. Cross the RD 52, pass in front of the water level of Chevallet and the chapel of Chevignat to catch up with Courmangoux by the mount Chevallet. In front of the church, turn right on a steep path towards the source of the Vauchère and the moulin de la roche. Go along the pond until you reach the road. Turn left at the crossroads with the cross and go along the barn. 2nd right, pass the farm of Chagnettes. Enter the forest, turn left, then right. At the farm of Carisse, turn left and take the road to the leisure center of the Grange du Pin.

The "Etang de But" site has been designated a sensitive natural area (ENS). It belongs to a chain of ponds in the southern Bresse plain, marking the transition to the Dombist plateau. This artificial pond is remarkable for the species of flora and fauna it contains. Set in a forest setting and sometimes covered with a carpet of white water lilies, it offers a variety of landscapes through the seasons. Key issues for the site Fauna: presence of the Leucorrhine dragonfly, yellow-bellied toad, great crested newt, Little Bittern, Black-crowned Night-Heron. Flora: Royal fern, water scorpion, Bohemian sedge, etc. The woodlands near the pond have a role to play in the pond's ecological functioning, in addition to their landscape value. Good management of these woodlands is essential. The main threats are the risk of the pond filling up, and invasion by invasive species. To discover the site... An information panel is located at the thou (drainage system), to the west of the pond. The site is generally accessible to pedestrians. The Etang de But was awarded the ENS or espace naturel sensible label by the Département de l'Ain in 2015. Treffort is the junction between the Bresse plain and the Revermont. A village of character, it has preserved its medieval layout and winegrowers' houses, and its streets are dotted with a number of interesting fountains. Treffort's history is recorded as far back as 974 (Trefortium), with the construction of the first fortified house, but there's no doubt that the site was inhabited long before that, particularly in the Gallo-Roman period. Clinging to the first ranges of the Jura, Treffort is a perched village that has retained its medieval layout. Lordship of the Counts of Burgundy, the town also belonged to the Lord of Coligny, to whom we owe the construction of the castle, and to the Lord of La Tour du Pin, who granted a charter of franchise to the inhabitants but had to cede Treffort to the Count of Savoy in 1289. The latter endowed the town with ramparts, pierced by at least six gates and defended by over thirty towers, the remains of which can still be seen today. In 1601, Treffort became part of the kingdom of France under the Treaty of Lyon. Vines also shaped the town for over a thousand years, until the arrival of Phylloxera and the First World War. Today, Comté replaces the Cavets' "p'tit vin" (nickname for the inhabitants of Revermont). Treffort was once a border town with Franche-Comté, which lies just beyond the mountain. Several times under siege, the town regained its serenity when the Comté was annexed to France in 1678. The remains of the castle (now privately owned) can still be seen from this defensive period, and you can stroll along the covered walkway that runs alongside the ancient ramparts on the valley side. Built by the Savoyards, they were pierced by at least six gates and topped by over thirty towers, and were as high as the church itself. The fortified house of the early Middle Ages was transformed in the 13th century under the impetus of the Sires de Coligny. It became a defensive castle, reinforced by eight towers, one of which served as an entrance to the south. It occupied a quadrilateral measuring 60 m x 43 m, protected to the south by a moat and drawbridge, and to the north by a trench dug into the rock, now used as a road. It was ravaged in the 16th century and transformed into a stone quarry (numerous reuses can be seen throughout the village). It was bought and partly rebuilt by Tony Ferret (1851-1923), architect of the Ain department. Rue Pelot: toponym from the Franco-Provencal ""pêl"" (hair), in connection with the skin-working industry or ""pelo"" (gruel) and the presence of grain threshing floors. The tanners found water here from the Nacaretan, an essential stream for their work away from the town, to avoid the unpleasant smell of the hides. The courtyards of the houses (on the right-hand side of the street) at the foot of the old ramparts were once used as threshing floors. Fontaine des trois jets (Three-spout fountain): this extraordinary development meant that residents no longer had to fetch water from outside the village. Legend has it that in good harvest years, wine flowed freely from this fountain. Carrouge fountain (1850): on the site of a former house (remains of a chimney, wall niches...). Carrouge, from the Latin "quadrivium", means crossroads of four roads. Rue Ferrachat: from Latin ""ferrarius"" (blacksmith) or ""ferratus"" (iron-clad). A Roman cistern lies beneath the street. Sink spouts protruding from the facades. Bridge house: this facade features mullioned windows, a basket-handle door lintel and, above all, a staircase known as a "bridge". It provided access to the house, which was elevated above the street because of the wine cellar, which was semi-buried in the rock. The other bridges were demolished in the 19th century to facilitate traffic. The hollow pillar (reused) was filled with water and used by the wheelwright to cool the metal strapping on the cartwheels and tighten them. Les halles: Dating from the 14th century, these were originally made of wooden pillars and wattle-and-daub walls, and hosted the market every Thursday morning. Afternoons were reserved for public audiences held by the châtelain. Destroyed by fire, they were rebuilt in the 14th century. Notre Dame de l'Assomption church (14th century) is located at the top of the village, near the castle. Its steeple was built with the help of the monks of Nantua, while the nave was left to the villagers and hastily covered. This explains the discrepancy between the nave and the bell tower. The façade was richly decorated in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Virgin and Child is sheltered by a Gothic-style canopy. On either side of the entrance portal, three coats of arms celebrate the return of Bresse and Revermont to the House of Savoy, through the marriage of Duke Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy to François I's daughter, Marguerite de France. The cross over the gable is pierced by an oculus, and its center features fleur-de-lys branches. Inside, the Louis XIV-style stalls are remarkable. The carved medallions depict the life of Saint-Bruno, founder of the Carthusian order, from the time he took the habit to his death.

A former estate of the Counts of Savoy and architect Tony Ferret, Château de Treffort in the Ain department overlooks Bresse from the Revermont mountains. The tour explores several centuries of history, including seigniorial life and the family of Amédée V, the château's first Savoyard owner.
