An intimate stroll around Dompierre-sur-Veyle to discover the ponds, landscapes and architecture (hamlets, manor houses and castles) of the Dombistes region, for contemplative walkers. The lake at Dompierre will also add to the pleasure. The Veyle crosses the plateau from south to north, almost marking the eastern boundary of the Dombes. Along its course, it reveals a number of high points (rare elevations on the Dombes plateau) where people have settled, as here at Montchamp (alt. 298) - average altitude in the Dombes 280 m! On the border between the Bresse valleys and the Dombes plateau, Lent, on the banks of the Veyle river and at the gateway to the great Seillon-La Rena forest, marks the boundary between these two natural regions. A walk that takes in the large Pommier pond opposite the Château de Montmouh. Above, the great hill of Mont de Longchamp with its castle, mill and chapel, one of the highest mountains in the Dombes landscape at 291 m altitude.

From the village of Lent, a short loop along the Veyle to La Planche (ford). This little loop takes you along the Veyle as it winds its way through a beautiful green landscape.

Thanks to the Cyclo-Dombes bike rental scheme discovering the beautiful countryside has never been easier. Bikes are available for hire at the tourist offices in Châtillon-sur -Chalaronne, St-Paul-de-Varax, Sandrans and Villars-les-Dombes. With 8 adult bicycles and 7 children’s bicycles and all the necessary safety equipment (helmets etc.) baby carriages, child seats and itineraries available the Cyclo-Dombes bike rental scheme enables all the family to enjoy the fresh air of the Dombes-Saône region. Bikes are available for hire at 4 of the region’s tourist offices and can be returned to any one of these offices no matter where you picked up your bike. You can get back to your point of departure using the local shuttle bus on weekdays and with the help of local taxi companies on the weekend.

L’Abbaye de Notre Dame de Dombes is a Cistercian abbey built in red brick that was completed in 1863 and designed by Pierre Bossan the same architect who designed Fourvière Basilica in Lyon and the basilica in Ars-sur-Formans. The Abbey of Notre Dame de Dombes in addition to being a beautiful structure designed in the neo-byzantine style also sits on 200 hectares of prime agricultural land. This land has been exploited by the abbey’s Cistercian monks for nearly 150 years and produces a range of farm products. These include honey, fruit, beef, cheese and the famous ‘Musculine’ which is made according to a traditional recipe and is said to have many health benefits. The abbey also has a workshop that produces beautiful religious icons. All these products are on sale in the abbey’s shop as well as other souvenirs. The Notre Dame de Dombes Abbey is open to the public all year round every day except Tuesday and there guided visits available (French only) by reservation at the Dombes Tourism Office.

Discover St Paul de Varax through the paintings of landscape painter Louis Jourdan and some of his personal effects. Classified as a Musée de France, the museum also features a video on life in St Paul in 1934, featuring the painter. A lover of the landscapes of the Dombe region, he mainly painted places in St Paul-de-Varax, where he lived. Some works by his painter friends from the Ain region are also on display. Activities on offer: A video projection on village life in his time A walking trail "In the footsteps" of the painter, signposted with explanatory panels. Temporary exhibitions throughout the summer. Owned by the Département de l'Ain, these remarkable natural environments, next to the Parc des Oiseaux, are highly diversified and representative of the Dombist landscape: meadows, woodlands and farmland sit alongside several ponds. Site not open to visitors. The Réserve départementale de la Dombes is not open to the public. However, it is possible to enjoy an overall view of the Turlet pond from an observatory located near the Parc des Oiseaux, on the RD1083. Only a few supervised visits are possible, organized for school groups in particular. Adjacent to the 345-hectare Parc des Oiseaux, it is owned by the Département de l'Ain. A veritable mosaic of natural habitats, these remarkable natural environments (ponds, meadows, hedges and woods) are characteristic of the Dombois ecosystem, and present major ecological, landscape and educational challenges. It is home to numerous bird species, including a wide variety of anatidae, grebes, egrets, night herons, storks, coots, newts (crested, alpine, palmate, spotted) and large-breasted leucorrhines. Its role is extremely important, particularly during the nesting period (spring/early summer) and over the winter. The species that breed or overwinter here are highly sensitive to disturbance. The long-term preservation of the site's ecological and landscape wealth is essential. The Réserve Départementale de la Dombes was also awarded the "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2016. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites awarded the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed in such a way as to preserve the biodiversity they host, and developed for opening to the public (barring exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). The Régie Natur'Ain is the site manager.

Etang du Chapelier in Versailleux is owned by the Fondation pour la protection des habitats de la faune sauvage and managed by the Fédération Départementale des Chasseurs de l'Ain. The pond will be dry by 2022. The Etang du Chapelier was awarded the "ENS" label by the Département de l'Ain in 2016. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites with the ENS "Espaces naturels sensibles" label are managed to preserve the biodiversity they host, and developed to be open to the public (with exceptions due to the fragility of the environments). An interpretation trail and two observatories allow the public to immerse themselves in the heart of a typically Dombist pond. Etang du Chapelier covers almost 60 hectares. Classified as a Natura 2000 zone and Hunting Reserve, the pond is managed in the traditional way by the Fédération Départementale des Chasseurs de l'Ain. It is home to numerous species of birds likely to nest or migrate to the pond, such as scaup, scaup, grebes, coots, herons and egrets. This large pond with its strong fish farming vocation also plays an important role in the network of large ponds in the Domb region, offering suitable sites for migratory stopovers and waterbird breeding. Interpretation panels and two observatories are available to visitors along a path that runs along the western bank of the pond. Binoculars or spotting scopes are highly recommended for birdwatching. With nearly 3,000 species of birds, the Parc des Oiseaux is the largest and most important ornithological park in Europe and with over 40 years experience the bird park offers visitors a world full of fascination and discovery in a scenic setting. The Parc des Oiseaux is located just outside the town of Villars-les-Dombes about an hour’s drive from Lyon, in the heart of the Dombiste Lakes. It is home to the most impressive collection of birds from all over the world to be found anywhere. The park is not only unique because of its collection, but also because of all the various ways visitors can discover the different species. Visitors can observe the birds in 20 different carefully designed landscapes that recreate the bird’s natural habitats which allow them to be housed in an environment that they are use to. The Parc des Oiseaux’s aviaries have been also specially designed to allow visitors to get closer to the birds than ever before. The park is best known for its award winning ‘Birds in Flight Show’, the 150 birds from around 20 different species starring in this breathtaking show make it the most impressive bird show in the world. While many European presentations usually let birds of prey steal the show, the Parc des Oiseaux prefers to feature species that reflect the rich and diverse variety of birds that live in the park. An exceptional natural area with century-old trees, this oak grove managed by the Office national des forêts is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Main tree species: Oak (71%), Hornbeam (15%), Beech (9%), other hardwoods (5%). An ancient forest Seillon was first mentioned in 1084, in a document establishing the boundaries of the Saint-Pierre de Brou priory. In 1131, the priory of Seillon was founded, returning to the Carthusian order in 1170. Ten years later, the Sires de Bâgé, then those of Saix and Coligny, donated the immense forest surrounding the priory to the monks. In November 1789, the forest was made available to the Nation and became state property. The Carthusian monastery was sold in 1791 and converted into an orphanage in the 19th century. Quality oaks. The Seillon state forest is rich in quality sessile oaks that supply the local and regional market. Seillon oaks have always been renowned for their quality, and were used to build the roofs of the Monastère Royal de Brou. An environmental role The forest limits the risk of flooding in urbanized areas in the event of flooding by playing an important retention role in relation to the La Reyssouze river. Its "buffer" role enables water to be stored during rainy periods and gradually released during dry periods. The Seillon state forest is home to typical lowland oak fauna. The main mammals are roe deer, wild boar, foxes, badgers, martens and hares at the edges. Among the diversity of birds, we note the presence of all woodpecker species, including the black woodpecker and the pileated woodpecker, emblematic species of ancient oak forests. Among insects, the most symbolic is the kite lucanus, a species attached to old oaks. Flora includes lily of the valley, anemone and periwinkle! Welcoming all publics Located to the south of Bourg-en-Bresse, the wooded territory of the Seillon state forest is a vast green lung for the urban area. The forest's lack of topography, numerous access points and public facilities make it accessible to the widest possible public. It is very popular with local residents, who come here to recharge their batteries, play sports or stroll through the centuries-old oaks and the relaxing atmosphere of the undergrowth. Its natural values and its capacity to welcome the public have led the Ain department to label the Seillon state-owned forest a "Sensitive Natural Area". A range of leisure facilities are available to suit all tastes: a fitness trail, an educational forest discovery trail for children and families, hiking, horse-riding and mountain-biking trails, a Randocroquis drawing and photography trail, playgrounds and picnic areas. A "voie verte" links the forest to the Bouvent water sports centre... a great way to go green! Located on the edge of the forest, yet close to the town center, the pond was created in 2003. Equipped with picnic tables and a shelter, it is ideal for fishing, walking and family relaxation. BARBECUES ARE PROHIBITED

The Dombes, the land of a thousand ponds, offers unique landscapes and the chance to discover age-old traditions. The ponds are home to a rich fauna and flora typical of these environments. One of the largest and most prestigious is the Grand Birieux. Le Grand Birieux is owned by the OFB. With a total surface area of 148.55 hectares (including 80 hectares of water), this pond is owned and managed by the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB). The site has an essential piscicultural vocation. It is home to a wide variety of bird species. Many ducks spend the winter here, including teal, pintail and various scaups. Hundreds of greylag geese regularly gather here. Several protected insects, such as the Swamp Copper (butterfly) and the Large-throated Leucorrhine (dragonfly), are also present. All these species can be observed from the observatory to be built in 2021. Every year, action is taken to manage the site. The ecological restoration of habitats conducive to biodiversity is also a very important issue for the site. The Etang du Grand Birieux is a sensitive site which plays an extremely important role for many species, particularly during the nesting season (spring/early summer) and overwintering period. Species that breed or overwinter here are highly sensitive to disturbance. Educational events are organized on the site.
