DOMAINE DE VALMIRANDE

DOMAINE DE VALMIRANDE

Park and gardens. A real arboretum with more than 180 species. Stables and tack rooms among the most beautiful in France. Concierge service at the entrance of the estate. Remarkable elements: statues, sculpture, factory, bridges, fountain, lake, cave. THE INTERIOR OF THE CASTLE CANNOT BE VISITED. The view that amazes me. Château de Valmirande, built by Baron Bertrand de Lassus, was created from scratch at the end of the 19th century. In 1892, he acquired 10 parcels of land in a single block, covering an area of around 41 hectares, to build the château, surrounded by landscaped grounds. The château was designed by Louis Garros, an architect from Bordeaux. For the parkland, Baron de Lassus called on the Bülher brothers, creators of the Parc de la tête d'Or in Lyon, Parc Borély in Marseille and the Talleyrand estate in Valençay, etc. In 1902, the château was extended to the east by a chapel, whose stained-glass windows, marbles and Sacred Heart by L. Barrias can still be admired. In 1912, landscape gardener René Édouard André added two French-style flowerbeds: one to the north of the château, the other to the south from which you can enjoy the view of the Pyrenees mountain range, so beloved of Bertrand de Lassus. Historic guided tours of the site take in the grounds, the listed stables and the chapel. The interior of the château, a private residence, is not open to visitors. Real arboretum of more than 180 species.

LE SITE DE SAINT-BERTRAND-DE-COMMINGES/VALCABRÈRE

A major stopover on the roads to Compostela, the Grand Site Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère offers a remarkable archaeological and monumental heritage. A crossroads of gentle itinerancy, the site is an ideal place for cycling and walking. Lugdunum Convenae, an ancient Roman town, was a prosperous settlement with several thousand inhabitants at the heart of a major transport network. It possessed all the hallmarks of a significant Roman town: a theatre, a temple, a forum, thermal baths and a vast market. The underground ruins at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère bear witness today to this rich ancient heritage. The imposing Sainte-Marie Cathedral, meanwhile, stands as a testament to the former medieval bishopric. Its cloister, opening out onto the hills of the Pyrenean foothills, is a place full of charm. The choir stalls and the organ, both dating from the Renaissance, are other highlights of the visit. Another key monument on the site, the Romanesque Basilica of Saint-Just-de-Valcabrère, standing alone amidst the fields, is particularly unusual. Built on the site of a Roman necropolis, it is largely constructed from reused stones taken from that very necropolis. The cathedral and the basilica, as well as the early Christian basilica and the Chapel of Saint Julien, situated in the lower town, are listed by UNESCO as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. The archaeological museum, open in summer, hosts temporary exhibitions showcasing the archaeological history of the site and the surrounding area. Crossed by the GR861-Via Garona and the GR78-Voie du Piémont, the site is the starting point for numerous walks and hikes suitable for all levels, not to mention the Garonne cycle path for cycling enthusiasts. On the cathedral forecourt, you’ll find ‘Les Olivétains – Haute-Garonne Tourisme’, where you can get all the information you need for visiting the site, the surrounding area and the department. Guided tours for groups. Temporary exhibitions. Bookshop and gift shop.

SITE ANTIQUE

Listed as a Historic Monument. The ancient city of Lugdunum is over 2,000 years old... The Grand Site of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère is well worth exploring, with its range of monuments from different periods. Founded in the 1st century BC, the capital of the Convènes territory (slightly larger than modern-day Comminges) covered an area of 36 hectares and had an estimated population of between 5,000 and 10,000. The oldest remains found on the site date back to the time of Emperor Augustus (27-14 BC). Only part of the ancient heritage is visible today, including the thermal baths, the market and the theatre. At the foot of the medieval town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, the archaeological site of Lugdunum Convenarum invites visitors to step back nearly two thousand years in time to discover one of the most important ancient cities in south-western Gaul. Founded at the end of the 1st century BC, this prosperous Roman city occupied a strategic position between the Pyrenees and the Garonne valley, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges with the entire Roman world. Today, the preserved remains bear witness to the wealth and importance of this former capital of the Convènes. As visitors explore the site, they discover the traces of a genuine Roman city with its ancient theatre, thermal baths, forum, places of worship and imposing monumental market, considered one of the largest in Roman Gaul. These remains allow us to imagine the daily life of the inhabitants who once brought the streets of this flourishing city to life. The site is also distinguished by its exceptional setting. Dominated by the majestic silhouette of the medieval town and its cathedral, the ruins blend harmoniously into the Pyrenean landscape. This convergence of ancient and medieval heritage offers visitors a unique insight into history, illustrating the continuity of human settlement in this region from antiquity to the present day. The numerous archaeological excavations carried out over more than a century have gradually revealed the extent of the ancient city. They have unearthed remarkable finds that help to enrich our understanding of Gallo-Roman civilisation in the Pyrenees. The site is now a must-visit for enthusiasts of history, archaeology and heritage. A visit to Lugdunum Convenarum is a true immersion in ancient history. With its monumental remains, interpretive spaces and exceptional views of the surrounding mountains, the site offers an enriching cultural experience that will appeal to families and history enthusiasts alike. This exceptional testament to antiquity makes Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges one of the key sites of Occitanie’s archaeological heritage.
