An itinerary that takes you on a journey through the centuries You’ll discover the places and some of the figures that have left their mark on the city of Jouy-en-Josas. Informational plaques at each point of interest (on building walls or posts) complete this tour. 1. Train Station To begin your walk, you’ll find yourself in front of Jouy-en-Josas station. On your left is our Tourist Office – feel free to step inside and have a look. With the station behind you, cross Avenue Jean Jaurès and go up Rue du Temple, to your left. At the end of this street stands the temple. On the perpendicular street, slightly to your left, you’ll see the house where Patrick Modiano spent part of his childhood. 2. Town Centre Then, walk back down Rue du Temple to reach Avenue Jean Jaurès again. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and take the tree-lined path running along the railway tracks. At the end, you’ll come across a small park where Napoleon I once awarded a Legion of Honour… Facing the park stands today’s community hall of Jouy-en-Josas, with a plaque at the car park entrance recalling the former textile factory. 3. Rue Oberkampf Continue your walk to the next junction, turn right and cross the railway. You’ll now be on Rue Oberkampf. On your right, the large building with a glass façade is the Old Mill. On your left are the Révérend houses, near the pharmacy, and the Écu de France (today the restaurant La Médina). Head further up the street towards the church. Nearby are the cemetery and the grand HEC castle. 4. Domaine du Montcel From the church, walk back down Rue Oberkampf, cross the railway again and pass by the Town Hall. Cross Avenue Jean Jaurès to reach the pedestrian path in front of the stone bridge house. This path leads you straight to the entrance of Domaine du Montcel. Very close by, on Rue de la Manufacture des Toiles de Jouy, you can also see Château de Vilvert. 5. Chemin de la Butte à Guétin From the entrance to Domaine du Montcel, follow Rue du Montcel to the left. At the junction with Rue Jean Bauvinon, cross the road and take the steps up Chemin de la Butte à Guétin. ⚠️ Take your time climbing – you’ll be going up almost 200 steps, so don’t forget to drink some water! Continue straight ahead and you’ll reach the house of Léon Blum. 6. Metz District Next, take Rue des Pétrins on your left, then Rue Victor Hugo. On the façade of number 10, you’ll find an extract from a Victor Hugo poem, in tribute to his relationship with Juliette Drouet. Following the same street to the junction, you’ll see Jeanne Blum School. Turn left here onto Chemin du Vallot. On the edge of the forest, on your right, lies Domaine Pasteur. 7. Metz Forest Carry on through the forest to enjoy the natural surroundings of the town. At the Butte crossroads, turn left onto the small path that descends towards the Musée de la Toile de Jouy. You’ll pass through the Rosehip Park. 8. Along the Bièvre Leave the museum car park and enter the park directly opposite. Take the path to your left, running alongside the Bièvre River. Keep going straight until you approach the railway tracks. Just on the other side of the tracks, at the junction, you’ll find Saint-Martin Mill and the Austerlitz Bridge. Finally, return to Jouy-en-Josas station to complete your walk.

Created in 1977 in the very town where Toile de Jouy was born, the museum celebrates this emblem of French textiles — a painted or printed cotton fabric, also known as *indienne* — while carrying forward the values of its creator: entrepreneurship, humanism, and openness to the world. Since 1991, the museum has been housed in the Château de l’Églantine, bearing witness to the quality and expertise of the Oberkampf manufactory, active from 1760 to 1848. Its collections bring together nearly 10,000 pieces from the 18th century to today: painted and printed fabrics, sample books, drawings, gouaches, paintings, costumes, furniture, bed linens, as well as various tools and mechanisms linked to printing techniques. The production of Jouy-en-Josas is represented, alongside other French centers (Normandy, Alsace, Provence) and foreign ones (Great Britain, Italy). In 2022, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy inaugurated its new historical exhibition spaces dedicated to the 18th and 19th centuries. This immersive journey into the Oberkampf manufactory (1760–1843) and its 30,000 printed motifs invites visitors to step into interiors inspired by the Oberkampf family — a bedroom, a study, and a music room — and discover how printed textiles were used in furnishings. Founded in 2003 by Bartabas at the Great Stables of the Palace of Versailles, the Versailles Equestrian Academy is a one-of-a-kind ballet company, built on both the transmission of knowledge and the art of performance. Built in 1686 to entertain the court, this hall dedicated to jeu de paume—the ancestor of tennis—is today famous for having witnessed a historic turning point: the Tennis Court Oath. On June 20, 1789, 578 deputies of the Estates-General proclaimed themselves the National Assembly and swore not to separate until they had given France a constitution. The idea of replacing the Salle du Jeu de Paume with a commemorative monument dates back to the Revolution, but no project was carried out until 1880, when the hall was transformed into a museum to mark the centenary of this decisive event.

The association aims safeguarding the handicraft heritage. Located in the inner village, in a renovated building, it has three levels totaling approximately 150 m2. The Upper Bièvre Valley is a territory made up of eleven municipalities within the departments of Yvelines and Essonne. This site was classified on 07/07/2000 along the river Bièvre, which has its source in Guyancourt and flows into the Seine in Paris. The Maison Léon Blum is the last home of the illustrious statesman, man of letters and architect of many social advances. All the rooms can be visited, from the kitchen to the modest bedrooms and the vast office-library. Léon Blum lived there from 1945, on his return from the Buchenwald camp, until his death in 1950. The day after his death, his wife Jeanne had plans to convert the house into a museum. When she died in 1982, Jeanne Blum bequeathed the house to the commune of Jouy-en-Josas with the mission of maintaining the memory of Léon Blum and developing cultural and artistic activities there. Listed as a Historic Monument, the House became a museum in 1986 and was awarded the label "Maison des Illustres" by the Ministry of Culture in 2012. Since 2017, it has benefited from a new permanent exhibition space that can be used by groups and schools. This space is composed of multiple documentary resources that allow the life and work of Léon Blum to be retraced in all its diversity. As Jeanne wished, the Maison Léon Blum is today a living place of memory and culture.

Claudine Breistroffer highlights worn materials such as cogs, pinions, wheels, bicycle chains, inner tubes ... all from cycle shops in Essonne and Yvelines, partners invested in a circular economy approach.
