It is 10 years since an urban perimeter of 1810 hectares in central Bordeaux has enjoyed recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This area takes in almost all of the city centre as the “Port de la Lune” (Port of the Moon). From the Pont de Pierre to the Jacques Chaban Delmas Bridge, from the oldest crossing of the Garonne to the most recent, this loop will take you on a journey through time, from the historic facades of the 18th century to the most modern developments of the city, such as the Cité du Vin. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a guarantee of a magnificent walk in the heart of the historic centre of the city. The Balades à Roulettes® (BR®) are short, quiet walks, with a pushchair or a small bicycle, or adapted for people with reduced mobility (in a wheelchair), proposed by the French Federation of Rambling of the Gironde.

This cycle route is the ideal way to discover Bordeaux for the first time. Set in the heart of the Port de la Lune along the Garonne, this route invites cyclists to discover classic Bordeaux, with its 18th-century facades and stone bridge, wooded and recreational Bordeaux, with the Parc aux Angéliques and Botanical Gardens, as well as contemporary and alternative Bordeaux, with Darwin and the crossing of the Chaban-Delmas lift bridge.

This family outing offers you a beautiful series of panoramas on the left bank of the city (Palmer Park, Belvédère Bellevue, Parc de l'Ermitage Sainte-Catherine). With the exception of a necessary ascent to reach the top of the hill, the short and relatively flat walk is accessible to all.

During this family and bucolic walk, marked by the presence of numerous flagstones, astonishing landscapes coexist: natural and preserved landscapes with the marshes of Bruges; artificial landscapes with the lake of Bordeaux and the atypical development of the park of Majolan. Marked by a very slight difference in altitude, this walk does not present any particular difficulty. On the other hand, plan a full day to fully enjoy the sites you will pass through.

This short family walk takes you close to the natural areas and more contemporary sites of the cities of Bruges and Bordeaux. The exploration of the new housing estates and the numerous cultural and recreational facilities located on both sides of the lake are at the heart of this peri-urban itinerary.

Cycling to the beach from the city centre of Bordeaux, in complete safety, may seem unrealistic. However, this route has existed for a long time in its peri-urban part backed by the departmental cycle path built in 1980 by the General Council on the site of a former railway line of local interest.

The Tour de Gironde à Vélo is a 480 km discovery itinerary, to be done in stages for a day or during a stay: from the vineyards to the ocean, it allows you to discover 10 must-sees, 6 of which are listed as world heritage by UNESCO. It includes part of the routes of the Vélodyssée and the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo as well as other departmental trails. The 90% of the route is on its own site, making it ideal for the family. The main stages : Bordeaux, the Entre-deux-Mers, the Canal de Garonne, the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park, the Bassin d'Arcachon, the Atlantic coast, the Gironde Estuary and the Médoc vineyards before returning to Bordeaux.

The Grand Theatre was built by Victor Louis from 1773 to 1780. This major architectural heritage site, which now houses the Bordeaux National Opera, is 88 metres long and 47 metres wide, fronted by a portico with twelve stone statues: the nine muses, accompanied by Minerva, Venus, and Juno. A monumental staircase leads to the theatre entrance.

Decorated in sumptuous blue, white and gold – the colours of royalty – the Grand-Théâtre, an 18th-century architectural masterpiece by Victor Louis, is now the stage for the Bordeaux National Opera. In the course of its long history dotted with theatre plays, operas and concerts, the Grand-Théâtre has played host to the most famous of artists. The Bordeaux National Opera mainly puts on lyrical and choreographic performances boasting exceptional artistic range: from Monteverdi to Britten via Mozart and Verdi... Bordeaux's city centre features a marvellously elegant monument. The Grand Théâtre has delighted visitors and been the pride and joy of Bordeaux for over two centuries. The masterpiece by Victor Louis was built during the reign of Louis XVI. This Parisian architect was involved down to the smallest details, and planned not just a concert hall, but also a café, boutiques, and even gambling dens… Restoration over the past few years has restored the theatre's original lustre.

A master-piece of European architecture, of which the stair well served as inspiration for the architect responsible for the Opera Garnier in Paris. Fronted by a columned portico with twelve stone statues (nine muses accompanied by Minerva, Venus, Juno), it is one of the most spectacular 18th century theatres in the world today.

Approximately 1200 meters long and 10 meters wide, rue Sainte Catherine is the main shopping street in Bordeaux.

The church and Cour Mably (Mably Courtyard) are the only vestiges of a Dominican monastery going back to the 13th century. The original church was on the present-day Allées de Tourny (laid out in 1745) but, further to a revolt against Louis XIV, it was destroyed in 1675 to make way for construction of the Château Trompette. The architect Pierre Michel Duplessy drew up the plans and designed the facade, inspired by the church of the Gesù in Rome. As opposed to the ornate exterior, the interior decoration is surprisingly simple. The chapels feature numerous trompe-l’œil decors as well as a series of 10 religious paintings by Brother André (1662-1735). Dating from the 19th century, the beautiful stained glass windows are attributed to the master Bordeaux glassmakers Villiet and Hutrel. The great organ (1775) is used for concerts of religious music all year round.

Bordeaux’s own version of the ‘Flatiron Building’ which houses the CIVB headquarters (Bordeaux Wine MultiDisciplinary Council) as well as their wine bar, which is a local institution (1788).

This 12-hectare square is the largest in Europe. The word quinconces refers to the way the way the trees are planted, in staggered rows. Located just across from and quite close to the river, there are two rostral columns topped with statues dedicated to Bordeaux's maritime and commercial activities. On the side of the Quinconces closest to the city centre are found large statues of the Bordeaux philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu. Looking westward, the Monument aux Girondins consists of bronze fountains and a column with a staute of liberty breaking its chains on top. This bears witness to the Girondin political faction during the French Revolution. Of course, this has nothing to do with the Girondins football club... despite an urban myth to this effect one hears from time to time!

The Allées were laid out in 1747 by Marquis de Tourny, the Royal Intendant, whose statue is located on Place Tourny, facing the street of the same name. Beautiful façades from the late 18th century with smart cafés and brasseries on the ground floor as well as outdoor tables. However, this district is best-known for its trendy boutiques as well as shops selling international brands and luxury items. This is where the tout Bordeaux runs into one another, the place to be seen… It is also where shops selling fancy foods, great growth wines, and Champagne are located.
