Situated in the administrative heart of the city, with its contemporary setting, the St-Lô Museum of Fine Art houses a collection of great wealth and variety. With more than 500 works on show, the museum’s collections offer a panoramic view of the history of painting from the 17 th century to the present day, illustrated by numerous artists such as Jordaens, Corot, Millet, Boudin, Léger, and de Castro. A collection of tapestries from the 16 th to the 20 th centuries is also on display, including a hanging of ‘Les Amours de Gombault et Macée’, Jean Lurçat and Grau Garriga, making this a must to visit. Although the museum is mainly devoted to Fine Art, from the summer of 2014 visitors have also been able to take in a new exhibition entitled ‘Men make the History of Saint-Lô’. Covering over 300 m² of floor space, it traces the history of the city from Neolithic times right up to its reconstruction in the middle of the 20 th century. The twists and turns in the town’s fortunes are shown through the eyes and lives of the characters who lived through them.

Sainte-Croix Church was consecrated in 1204. This Romanesque building is the oldest in Saint-Lô and has undegone many modifications over the centuries. Only the gate and the first bays remain from the Norman period.

Construction of the church of Notre-Dame began in the 13th century and progressed in stages according to the space available in the highly urbanised enclosure. The 15th-century architects added so much majesty to this stone structure dominating the upper town, that it is often referred to as a cathedral. At the meeting point between the second north side-aisle and the ambulatory, both built by Geoffroy Herbert, Bishop of Coutances (1488-1510), an external pulpit adds a delicately flamboyant touch, recalling those seen in Brittany (Vitré, Guérande, and Nantes): it was intended for the announcements of civil jurisdiction acts by the Bishop of Coutances, who was also Baron of Saint-Lô. The pulpit was used for the outdoor sermons given by Saint Jean-Eudes (1642, 1663, 1675-1676) and Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (1714), who were thus able to preach to the crowds that gathered in the courtyard of the episcopal palace. In his book “Things Seen”, Victor Hugo tells us that the external pulpit was scheduled for realignment by the town planning scheme (1863). He also sketched the pulpit which, thanks to him, was saved from demolition.
