The small town of Coulonges-sur-L'Autize has undergone three major phases of development during its history. In the Middle Ages, the settlement gathered around the church of Saint-Etienne. The medieval nucleus, now a little out of place, is characterized by winding streets where a few houses show signs of age. A second period of urbanization began in the 16th century with the construction of a vast castle, built around a large quadrangular square. Finally, the 19th century ushered in a new period of prosperity and growth. This economic boom, linked to the exploitation of lime kilns, resulted in the construction of major roads, the installation of the railway, the building of market halls and a wealthy housing.

The circuit is marked out with a dragonfly and explanatory panels installed on chirons will guide your stroll.

The abbey, founded in 1120 by Géraud de Salles, was badly damaged during the Hundred Year War. The church was rebuilt by Abbot Bernard d' Appelvoisin in the 15th century. Inside, a wall painting dating from the end of the Middle Ages shows Saint Michel beating the dragon and two other Middle Age wall paintings show the crucifixion and Saint Grégoire « Le Grand's » mass. The Abbey Church will undergo a 3-year programme of renovation work.

If there is one place in Deux-Sèvres where fir trees grow best, it’s in l'Absie. Set in a 2.5 hectare park, this garden grows 70 varieties originating from as near as Vosges or as far away as Korea, making this park very unique.
