From the Montagne Noire to the Pays des Bastides, passing through the Gaillac vineyards, the Tarn valley, the Sidobre and the Monts de Lacaune, you will be amazed by the diversity of our landscapes. This itinerary is largely based on the GR® network and can be discovered at your convenience over one or more days. A must-do with your horse or by joining one of the 10 equestrian tourism centres affiliated to the Comité Départemental de Tourisme Equestre du Tarn.

The GR®653 crosses 10 départements, including Haute-Garonne, over a distance of 140km. This section of Via Tolosana arrives in Toulouse via the Canal du Midi and Lauragais hills and plain. Starting in Arles, Via Tolosana or Via Arletanensis heads towards the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater. From Camargue to Toulouse, GR®653 first follows Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road, then enters the foothills of Haut-Languedoc. This historic route runs through a vast landscape, enhanced by a rich architectural heritage. After Toulouse, GR653 crosses Gascony, northern Bigorre and Béarn. Then it enters Aspe valley and Aragon, in Spain. Voie d'Arles joins ‘el Camino frances’ at Puente-la-Reina. A route along Rigole de la Plaine, linking Saint-Ferréol and Lenclas lake; a shaded route with steep slopes. Notice to amateurs! Start: from Revel at the Moulin du Roy municipal campsite (departure area of the green route) This route has an ochre-coloured compacted sand surface that is not suitable for rollerblades. With a width of 2m, it is reserved for non-motorised modes of transport (except for horse riders). It is ideal for walking, mountain biking and provides a 17 km link to Lenclas lake from Revel. Once you reach Lenclas, the green route ends. You can then continue for around 25 km on a track to the Canal du Midi. V84 or Véloccitane is a whole itinerary from Béziers to the Canal du Midi at Naurouze threshold, via Bédarieux, Olargues, Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, Mazamet, Castres and Revel. Don't miss a visit to the Réservoir, a kind of museum dedicated to Canal du Midi history at Saint-Ferréol.

A fast, peachy loop, a stone's throw from the city, for a cardio workout after work or an introductory ride. Even if my gradients can make you smile for an experienced mountain biker, taken at his own pace, they can hurt a lot... This loop is a more accessible variant of the circuit: "le grand tour par les collines". The start is the same and the two circuits split shortly before the "métairie haute" where this track leads directly to Canguilan without having to loop around in Briatexte. We therefore enjoy the small valley of the stream of Assou at a lower cost, always following the markings. We finish calmly, after joining the D84, by descending the ridges overlooking the Notre-Dame stream. Under the Canguilan antenna, the route this time proposes to remain always to the west of the D84. The return to Graulhet is downhill.

Located in the heart of the "Pays de Cocagne", Puylaurens is a wonderful look-out spot, overlooking the plain of Lauragais, the Montagne Noire and - when the weather allows it - the Pyrenees. This old protestant town is also the birthplace of the song-writer who first called the French Republic by the name of Marianne. The fortified town of Puylaurens became in the 16th century a high spot of the Pays de Cocagne -or land of prosperity- thanks to the cultivation of pastel, the plant from which was extracted the blue pigments used to dye textiles. The plant was sold all around Europe under the form of dried balls called "cocanhas" in occitan, which explains the name "Pays de Cocagne". The trade of pastel incidentally enabled the circulation of ideas and this is how Protestantism traveled from Northern Europe to Occitanie when the kingdom of France had always been catholic. In the year 1660, the Protestant Academy located in the city of Montauban was transferred, by order of the king, to Puylaurens. It remained there during 25 years and was shut down as the Edict of Nantes, that granted religious tolerance, was annulled. In 1792, during the French Revolution, an inhabitant of Puylaurens, the cobbler and minstrel named Guillaume Lavabre wrote a song called "La Garisou de Marianno" (the Healing of Marianne), a popular satyr in which he gave the name Marianne to the French Republic. The text of this song is the oldest written token of the attribution of that name to the Republic, the town of Puylaurens can thus be considered as the birthplace of Marianne, allegory of the French Republic. Places of interest: - Look-out over the plain of Lauragais and the mountains - The church Notre Dame du Lac and its picturesque covered market, the church was destroyed by the Protestants in 1621 and again by a fire in 1896. - The protestant temple (not open to visitors) - The half-timbered-houses from the 17th and 18th centuries - The fortification walls - The castle "Cap de Castel", former medieval construction that served as a prison during the Albigensian Crusade and is now part of a hotel-restaurant - The weekly market, the local producers market in summer, and the horse market that takes place the first Sunday of each month.

The abbatial church is open to anyone looking for spiritual serenity or willing to attend mass (the liturgy is given in french and gregorian). The two monasteries of Dourgne were founded together in 1890: Dom Romain Banquet (born in the hamlet called En Calcat in 1840) founded the St Benoit Monastery, gathering catholic benedictine monks, while Mother Marie Cronier founded the Ste Scholastique Abbey for the nuns . The two communities are independent from one another and both live under the rule edicted by Saint Benedict in the 6th century. Their respective churches are opened to anyone looking for spiritual serenity or willing to attend mass (the liturgy is given in french and gregorian). The guesthouse welcomes visitors for peacefull retreats, and pilgrims can stop by on the Way of St James and stay overnight (by reservation). Located at the bottom of the Montagne Noire (literally: the Black Mountain) and in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc (Nature Park of the High Languedoc), the charming village of Dourgne with its abbeys and chapels is a beautiful starting point for walks and treks in a natural and spiritual environment. Located in an area inhabited by men since prehistoric times, the village of Dourgne will charm you with its small central square and its arcades but most of all, with the beauty of the surrounding landscape and its mountain paths, climbing up to the top of a plateau, through the woods and alongside little streams of crystal clear waters. In the 1890's two benedictine abbeys have been erected in this place that favours meditation: the monastery of En Calcat is home to a community of monks from which originated Dom Robert, a local tapestry artist, while Ste Scholastique is a convent for nuns who live from the sales of their crafts. The village is on one of the four Ways of St James and pilgrims and walkers will enjoy the natural and spiritual environment. Things to do in Dourgne: - Walk up to the Capelette, a chapel built on the plateau of the "Desert of St Ferréol" (only open on certain occasions such as the guided visits organised by the tourist office, for more information call 0800 74 65 81). - go fishing or enjoy a splash in the pools that have been set up on the brook during the 18th century in order to supply water to the fountains in the village. - look for the chapel of the Bayou and its miraculous little cascade hidden in the woods. - and for the bravest, try paragliding to get down the hill! The town of Revel was founded by the French King Philippe VI in 1342. This bastide is organised around a central square where the streets converge in a grid pattern. This square with its polychrome galleries and arcades of brick, wood and stone is a real setting for a splendid medieval market hall. The 14th century market hall is one of the largest in France. It is 39 m each side and is supported by 79 oak pillars. It is the heart Revel citizen life, especially on Saturday mornings when one of the 10 most beautiful markets in France takes place. Revel Belfry, neo-classical style, dates from 1834 replacing a half-timbered and bricks architecture. The belfry rings the bell for the whole town. The country guard and town crier lived there until 1965. It had several functions: watchtower, town clocks and bells, prison and town hall. These two intertwined buildings are subject to a major restoration campaign scheduled to run from late 2024 to spring 2026. Climbing up the belfry will no longer be possible. The roof will be re-tiled, fragile beams replaced, some pillars reinforced, the bell tower masonry restored. The dome covered with its original mateial: fish-scale slates. The clocks will be settled in their original height and the terrace cladding removed to reveal the terracotta floor tiles of it conceals. The terrace door will be returned to its original position. The interior of the tower will also be refurbished to provide the best possible conditions to welcome the public after the works. In the meantime, the Tourist Office will be moved to the Musée du Bois et de la Marqueterie.

Taking advantage of the force of the wind blowing across Lauragais hillsides or the water flowing through the valleys, several mills have been built in our destination to grind grains from local crops or make textiles. Today, some mills are still part of our landscape, carefully preserved as witnesses to another era. Among the mills still standing, you can admire the following from the road: - Mourvilles-Hautes mill, a windmill and tower with two pairs of millstones, whose roof was restored in 1997. A second, more recent mill in front of the miller's house has a tiled roof. - Three mills in Le Vaux are located below the castle, a little further south. One of these mills is among the eldest in the area, dating back to the 16th century. - the windmills of Saint-Félix-Lauragais, located on the aptly-named ‘butte des trois moulins’, visible from the Rue des Nobles, the Moulin du Chapitre at the foot of the Montfort tower and the Moulin de la Croix (on the Route de Toulouse, next to the chemist's shop), which was given a state-of-the-art wooden roof in autumn 2024. - There are also mills along Sor stream between Revel and Durfort. These are private properties. Moulin du Chapitre and Moulin de l'Abbé offer bed and breakfast accommodation. - Durfort town council has created a heritage trail upstream from the village, along Sor. This little chapel - or capelette - was built in 1947 by the monks of the Abbey of En Calcat. It is not open to visitors. The Capelette was built near the location of a former chapel that does not exist anymore but the place bears a cross as a token. The presence of a chapel on the plateau of St Ferréol probably dates back to the Middle-Ages.
