De ses vestiges du passé le plus lointain (Porte de l'Horloge du XIIIème siècle) jusqu’à aujourd'hui, Vabre a traversé les siècles, témoin des guerres de religions (maisons de la rue Vieille XVIIème siècle), de l'âge d'or de la filature (XIXème et début du XXème siècle) et du maquis notamment durant la seconde guerre mondiale où il fut très actif. À cette époque sombre, l'attitude exemplaire d'habitants ayant caché et protégé une centaine de juifs a valu à Vabre d'être membre depuis 2015 du réseau des Villes et Villages des Justes(en juillet et août possibilité de visiter l'Expo Maquis aux heures d'ouverture du bureau d'Information Touristique).
