You will be taken by surprise on this revitalising walk alongside this river that flows down from the mountains, with waters that are sometimes calm and sometimes rough, depending on the weather and the seasons. Away from the cars, by foot, bicycle or on horseback, with family or friends, everyone can explore the wonders of the Giffre Mountains at their own pace.

Departure from the town centre, in front of the town hall: This trail will take you on a tour of the Chartreuse de Mélan, the Lac de Flérier and along some very enjoyable tracks through the forest!

A nature and culture trail This easy trail is a great way to explore the shores of the Lac de Flérier, as well as the villages of Flérier and Taninges. The village of Flérier was the former historic centre of Taninges with a chapel, bread oven and wash-house.

This trail will take you on a tour of the village of Flérier. Along flat trails and some sections on tarmac roads, this trail will take you on a discovery of a small hamlet with traditional architecture and Gothic-style chapel.

A nature and culture trail This easy trail will take you on an exploration of the ancient village of Taninges and the old town. To see along the way: The old town of Taninges, the Foron and the grounds of the ancient castle with a beautiful view of the village, the Renaissance houses.

A 20 km loop through the villages of Taninges, Verchaix, Morillon, La Rivière-Enverse and Châtillon-sur-Cluses, with a tasting stop at the Tiffanie bakery to discover local specialities. (1) Departure from "Bike Expérience" in Taninges. Take the RD907 towards Verchaix / Samoëns for a few meters, then turn right into "rue de Champfleury", then into "chemin des écoliers". On your left is the "Chartreuse de Mélan" (2), which you will pass alongside, along with its park of contemporary sculptures. As you leave the park, turn right and follow the pedestrian signs with yellow arrows on a green background towards "Morillon par les bords du Giffre" and "lac des Vernays" (3) along the Art et Nature trail. Continue along the Giffre to Verchaix. You will arrive close to the artisanal zone with the Brasserie de la Vallée du Giffre (4). Turn right following the pedestrian and mountain bike markings “Les Grands bois”. Cross the Giffre bridge and follow the Giffre this time on the left bank towards La Rivière-Enverse. At the "Pont Perrière" / "La Grasse" directional post, cross the RD4 and take the "route des champs", cross the place called "Vers le Pont" and follow the blue VTTAE markings of the "Les Grands Bois" circuit. In Cravarin take direction Châtillon-sur-Cluses. (5) At the Nicodex chapel, take the direction of “Fargot d’en Haut” then “Le Plon” and “Châtillon-sur-Cluses”. The gourmet break will be at the Tiffanie bakery (6). Then take the D902 and return towards "Bike Expérience" (1) Be careful, this road is busy.

A very tough climb that is eased by a flatter section through the resort of Praz de Lys and crowned by a gorgeous view of Mont Blanc. Mean gradient: 6%

These stones were laid according to Roman techniques and the path was first used in the Middle Ages by the monks from the Chartreuse de Mélan to access Praz de Lys pastures 1,000m further up. For a long time, this was the only access to Praz de Lys. Along this itinerary, the landscapes are varied, between the villages, forests and pastures, as well as some magnificent viewpoints from the heights of Taninges and Praz de Lys, over the Mont-Blanc and Chablais mountains.

Taninges - La Rivière Enverse Sector: This walk along the river Giffre will take you on a discovery of the Chartreuse de Mélan and the contemporary artworks in the grounds. This building was built in 1285 by Béatrice de Faucigny and its impressive size and perfectly preserved condition make it a spectacular construction. Today it is owned by the Haute-Savoie Department and in the 3-hectare grounds there are some contemporary monumental sculptures. The trail then takes you along the river Giffre where you can enjoy the Art and Nature Trail through this natural, preserved area. This trail is in constant evolution and was created by the association “Artistes en Herbe”, featuring some semi-permanent and temporary artworks. The trail then continues alongside the Lac des Vernays and then leads to the hamlet “Les Bois”. Morillon - Verchaix - Samoëns sector: After a long section through a wooded area on this “Au Fil du Giffre” trail, you'll arrive in the ultimate place for leisure activities: Lac Bleu in Morillon and then 7 kilometres further on, Les Lacs aux Dames, 2 places with a wide range of fun activities on offer! These places are ideal for both relaxing and exciting activities. On the shores of Lac Bleu, whose name comes from the magical shades of blue that contrast with the green of the surrounding peaks, you’ll be able to swim, go treetop climbing, horseback riding, ride along a pumptrack or play a game of crazy golf. A wide range of activities to do with friends or family. Les Lacs aux Dames in Samoens is a remarkable place where you can walk, go fishing, explore, run or take part in the activities there such as treetop climbing, tennis, disc golf, swimming, paragliding and so much more. After crossing over the R’biolle walkway, you’ll go under the Grand Massif Express cable car that can be used in winter to go to the ski area bearing the same name. After Clévieux walkway, you have 2 possibilities: either you carry on along the Giffre (GR5) through the woods, or you can walk along an easy path that runs alongside the agricultural plain, on your way you’ll have a beautiful panoramic view of the Criou and Buet. Both trails lead to the Pont du Perret. Sixt Fer à Cheval sector: If you’re coming by bicycle, we recommend using a mountain bike here. After an uphill section through the hamlet of Perret, you’ll reach the Tines gorges where you can stop off to watch rafting or other white-water rapids sports. If you so wish, you can cross over the Tines walkway at the car park to go to Rochers des Tines, a climbing hotspot of the Giffre Mountains suitable for all levels of ability. If you then go back to the path that leads to the Tines viewpoint, you’ll be able to see the ancient railway tracks that once connected Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and Annemasse. The closed tunnel you can see is now used as a maturing cellar for the neighbouring farm. Then you’ll cross through the magnificent village of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, and then follow signs for the hamlet of Vivier, to reach the Cirque du Fer à Cheval. This major site of the Haute Savoie takes its name (Fer-à-chevel = horseshoe) from the shape of the cliffs that will make you feel as if you are in an open-air amphitheatre. This is the biggest Alpine mountain cirque. The impressive vertical cliffs have created many waterfalls, the number of which varies depending on the season. The contemporary sculpture park Open to the public, the large park around the Chartreuse de Mélan is home to a dozen monumental works. This small lake in the village of Flérier is the ideal spot for family picnics, with a dining area and fishing facilities. Hikers can also make a shady stop here, as two hiking trails pass through the lake. With a depth of 6 meters, this lake is an EDF electric reservoir. Anglers need a 1st category fishing permit, available from the Tourist Office. The lake is located on a hiking trail, in the village of Flérier, one of the most beautiful hamlets in Taninges.

The peal of bells at Taninges, in the church belltower, is the largest in the area: it has 40 bells and every year attracts expert bellringers for concert performances. It also houses a collection of harmoniums. Abbé Bastard-Boghain, the parish priest at the time, was responsible for the Taninges carillon. A musician at heart, he launched a subscription campaign among parishioners, enabling him to install 15 bells and a 30-key keyboard in 1939. Abbé Bastard-Boghain used to play the bells at religious festivals and ceremonies. After his departure in 1967, the carillon fell into oblivion. It wasn't until 1985 and the creation of the Association du Carillon de Taninges that the instrument was revived, thanks to the determination of a handful of volunteers. Over the years, the number of bells has successively increased to reach 40. Climbing the 127 steps up to the keyboard, visitors can discover a permanent exhibition on the art of bell ringing and a collection of harmoniums.

A monumental church by its size but also by its history ! Built between 1824 and 1834 by the architect Prosper Dunant, the St Jean-Baptiste church is from the last architectural style of the States of Savoy : neo-classic Sardinian. Before, it was the biggest of the diocese of Annecy : 58 m length, 27 m wide and 18 m height. The facade of the building looks austere with few ornaments, but inside there is a profusion of decoration : paintings on the vault and pillars, stalls, carved wood and multicolored stained glasses. The visitor will visit a religious building and will discover how the jacquemarde population was decorating its churches there during the XIXth century.

Using photos, tools, objects and personal accounts, the permanent exhibition "Mémoire de rue" lifts the veil on life in Taninges and the products that have contributed to its reputation, from the past to the present day: salting, the manufacture of protective clothing, woodworking (cabinetmaking, joinery and carpentry), carpentry and the many hydraulic devices built along the waterways. The activities of fruit farmers and mountain pastures are also evoked. Each theme is highlighted by a 5-minute film and a collection of photographs and antique tools. A fun trail allows young and old alike to discover the valley's past from a different angle: interactive game of the sensory caisson (discovering different textiles by touch), Loëx board game (general knowledge questions at different levels, from 5 to 105 years old, intergenerational), animated forge model... A twenty-minute video projection lets visitors explore Taninges through the seasons: narrated by children, this video tour takes visitors on an immersive journey into the heart of our region, its history and its landscapes.

Stroll in the old village of Taninges and discover a whole built heritage (XVIth - XIXth century) around the marketplace : fountain, old houses, arches, chapel and old bridge above Foron. Taninges, well situated between Annemasse & Sixt and Cluses & Thonon, knew for ages an intense business development. The village, formerly settled in the hamlet of Flérier, moved and got organized around the marketplace, it is unchanged since 1730. To discover : Saint Anne chapel, old houses, old bridge in hogback, and St Jean Baptiste church.

In the 18th c. Joachim de la Grange, Comte de Taninges et de Flérier, built a vast château on the heights of Taninges. A century later, Laurent Marie Humbert, a Jacquemard who had left to make his fortune in Paris, returned to his origins and, in the image of his fortune and his dreams, built a building and its outbuildings on 1400 m2 of land. The house features all the comforts of the time. The "Clos du Chalet" was completed in 1857 and dominated the town of Taninges until 1995. All that remains of this former splendor are the memories.

Walking on the little footpath that follows the ridge between Châtillon pass and the Orchez mountains, you'll quickly arrive at a sloping ledge with a tiny chapel at its centre. Autumn, late in the day, is the best time to fully appreciate this superb site. The ground is carpeted with leaves of every colour and the sun's low rays turn this little marvel into a colourful array. As soon as you step through the small doorway, you're instantly dazzled by the icon painted on the wall of the altar.
