Walking tour of the banks of the Foron and the ancient village

A monumental church by its size but also by its history !Built between 1824 and 1834 by the architect Prosper Dunant, the St Jean-Baptiste church is from the last architectural style of the States of Savoy : neo-classic Sardinian. Before, it was the biggest of the diocese of Annecy : 58 m length, 27 m wide and 18 m height. The facade of the building looks austere with few ornaments, but inside there is a profusion of decoration : paintings on the vault and pillars, stalls, carved wood and multicolored stained glasses. The visitor will visit a religious building and will discover how the jacquemarde population was decorating its churches there during the XIXth century.

In the 18th c. Joachim de la Grange, Comte de Taninges et de Flérier, built a vast château on the heights of Taninges.A century later, Laurent Marie Humbert, a Jacquemard who had left to make his fortune in Paris, returned to his origins and, in the image of his fortune and his dreams, built a building and its outbuildings on 1400 m2 of land. The house features all the comforts of the time. The "Clos du Chalet" was completed in 1857 and dominated the town of Taninges until 1995. All that remains of this former splendor are the memories.

Stroll in the old village of Taninges and discover a whole built heritage (XVIth - XIXth century) around the marketplace : fountain, old houses, arches, chapel and old bridge above Foron.Taninges, well situated between Annemasse & Sixt and Cluses & Thonon, knew for ages an intense business development. The village, formerly settled in the hamlet of Flérier, moved and got organized around the marketplace, it is unchanged since 1730. Exhibitions, touchpad, model, movies, so many possibilities to make you discover Taninges.Sculptures in wood, stone or metal, oil or acrylic paintings, engravings or prints, photographs and watercolors all display their shapes and color palette at Espace Jacquem'Arts, as the seasons go by. Let yourself be surprised by one or other of our seven programmed annual exhibitions, and meet the artist at the vernissages or sometimes during the weekend. And if you, in turn, would like to offer your work to visitors, please contact us as soon as possible, as the waiting time between request and exhibition can be quite long...

Exhibitions, touchpad, model, movies, so many possibilities to make you discover Taninges.It is built around two exhibition spaces: one permanent, the other temporary. Using photos, tools, objects and personal accounts, the permanent exhibition "Mémoire de rue" lifts the veil on life in Taninges and the products that have contributed to its reputation, from the past to the present day: salting, the manufacture of protective clothing, woodworking (cabinetmaking, joinery and carpentry), carpentry and the many hydraulic devices built along the waterways. The activities of fruit farmers and mountain pastures are also evoked. Each theme is highlighted by a 5-minute film and a collection of photographs and antique tools. A fun trail allows young and old alike to discover the valley's past from a different angle: interactive game of the sensory caisson (discovering different textiles by touch), Loëx board game (general knowledge questions at different levels, from 5 to 105 years old, intergenerational), animated forge model... A twenty-minute video projection lets visitors explore Taninges through the seasons: narrated by children, this video tour takes visitors on an immersive journey into the heart of our region, its history and its landscapes.
