This woodland route, for experienced walkers only, is located in the Mont de Grange nature reserve, where chamois can be seen! Head towards Villapeyron and park in the sawmill car park. The route starts at the top of the Chemin de Villapeyron, 50m from the car park. The path enters undergrowth, crosses a stream and climbs straight up until it reaches a forest track. From here, take the winding path up to the oratory. Continue along the path rising to the right of the oratory and join the wide path leading to the Boudîmes mountain pasture. Cross the mountain pasture to reach a small plateau behind the high-voltage pylon. The route then rises gently through the mountain pastures, the panorama opening up as you climb and you can see the Dents du Midi (3,257m). Once you reach Les Québales-bas, leave the left-hand path leading into the forest and take the path to the top of the route. You're in the Mont de Grange game reserve, and if you're patient and quiet, you might just catch a glimpse of some chamois! The return journey takes the same route, but don't venture beyond the Québales where the risk of avalanches is high.

This walk follows the footsteps of former smugglers and customs officers who criss-crossed the region until the 1950s. The view over the Illiez and Abondance valleys reveal a fraction of the many routes taken by the smugglers on their clandestine operations. Their encounters have left some wonderful and revealing stories in this frontier region which are starting to fade from memory. To learn more about their aventures, you can rent a special battery pack from the "Vieille Douane" or Châtel Tourisme, between mid-June and September, which activates the audio posts ("borne sonore") along the way. From the old customs building "Vieille Douane", follow the RD22 road to Morgins for about 100 metres, then take the track that leads straight to the border and to markers 1737 and 1891. Carry on towards "La Pointe du Midi". There's a shorcut for families to head back through the forest, if needed. For a harder walk, head along the border ridge by the "Plan des Mitres", to the "Col de Fecon". Head home via the "Perthuis" chalets and "Aity" before arriving at the "Vieille Douane".

During this walk you will cross mountain pastures and forests to reach Pointe du Midi, which offers you a magnificent panoramic view of the Valley and neighbouring Switzerland. Maybe you will see chamois there. From the Linga carpark follow the direction of Aity d'en Haut. Follow the track on your left entering a beautiful spruce forest. At the Pertuis d'en Bas mountain pasture, the trail becomes a path and leads to the Pertuis d'en Haut mountain pasture, where you can see the chalet. At the chalet, continue the ascent on your left until you reach the Col de Fécon, which can be perceived in the middle of the "voraches", the local name given to the wild alder. The itinerary then becomes rougher and it is not uncommon to be able to observe deer and chamois, if you're discrete. Cross over the ridges and pass by the Plan des Mitres and the Pointe du Midi to admire the picturesque and beautiful view over the Abondance valley, Morgins and the Swiss Alps. Once at the Pointe du Midi, turn left onto the path through the undergrowth without leaving it until you reach the place called "Les Blattes". At this level, turn left to reach the Aity d'en Haut where you find the original route.

During the ascent to the chalet of Sur le Bord, a beautiful forest of spruces offers itself to you. This conifer, too often confused with its cousin the fir, is essential to the ecosystem of the subalpine layer. It provides a pantry for squirrels and birds and shelters many nests. Its wood is used for the production of carpentry and joinery parts. Itinerary: The start of the walk begins with a tour of Lake Vonnes to the fishing guardian's chalet and then slightly uphill towards the departmental road that you cross and take the path leading to Pas de Morgins. At the pass, cross the departmental road again and take the path leading to the picnic area. Breathtaking view of the Lac de Vonnes. Take the rising forest track, the view then opens onto the upper Abondance valley (the Linga and the Essert waterfall). Once at the Sur le Bord chalet, the route crosses a spruce forest. After a short descent, you arrive at Lac de la Mouille, the ideal setting for a picnic. Take the road again, going down towards the chalets of Conche and after a few bends, you arrive at point 1395m where you take on the left the path plunging in the direction of Châtel. Arriving above the cable car, take the track leading to Lac de Vonnes.

This is an easy forestry out-and-back route that can be extended with a variant in the form of a loop, starting from the car park at the Vonnes inter-domain link. To get to the starting point from the centre of Châtel, head towards Vonnes and go as far as the inter-domain link, either by car or by taking the line 4 shuttle bus and getting off at the "Gabelou" stop. From the start sign, follow the path overlooking the Chapelle Notre Dame de Vonnes to join the Chemin des Ramines in the direction of the Gabelou chairlift. Cross the bridge and then turn left to follow the track above the chairlift station. At the junction with the downhill ski slope, turn left again at the hairpin bend and continue straight ahead through the forest to the beautiful viewpoint at Les Blattes. You can return to the start by the same route. Variation: continue on the wide track towards Morgins for 40m, then turn right onto a narrower path to complete the loop. Continue straight ahead on the relatively flat path (1 km) before plunging straight down the slope towards the Gabelou chairlift.

It's a short, easy loop that's suitable for all the family, with very little difference in altitude. From the village centre, head towards Vonnes, as the starting point is at the car park for the inter-domain link. To get there, take the line 4 shuttle bus and get off at the Gabelou stop. From the signpost at the Vonnes link car park, follow the path overlooking the Chapelle Notre Dame de Vonnes to reach the Chemin des Ramines, fork right downhill towards the loop prepared for pedestrians. This very easy route, accessible to all, will take you from Châtel through the forest to Morgins Lake in Switzerland. From the centre of Châtel, head towards Lac de Vonnes, where the path starts at the car park for the inter-domain link. To start from the village centre: at the Super-Châtel cable car, take the concrete stairs on the left and walk 40m along the lift up the slope (the only difficulty), then turn right along the balcony path towards Lac de Vonnes. Return the same way or take the shuttle bus (line 4, Gabelou stop). Alternatively, from the Liaison Vonnes car park, cross the road by the footbridge to reach the start of the path. This is a magnificent route in fine weather, as the view from the crests stretches from the Mont Blanc chain to the main Swiss peaks. This area of ridges and passes was once a smuggling route between France and Switzerland. The path starts at the bottom station of the Super-Châtel cable car. First take the fairly steep path rising straight ahead to join the downhill ski slope rising on your left towards Le Crêt. Halfway up this climb, follow the path to the right into a spruce forest and, after a short climb, fork left to reach the wide carriage road leading to Super-Châtel. This path rises gently past the chalets de Conche, then follow the left-hand path back to Super-Châtel. Just left after the chalets, take the track to the summit of Morclan. Climb back down to the Col de la Folière and back up to the Pointe des Ombrieux, then continue through the mountain pastures (Portes d'Onnaz) to join the path at the start of the Tour de Don ski lift. From here, the path ends and takes you to a track leading up to the Chalets du Mouet. Turn left and continue downhill to the intermediate station of the Barbossine chairlifts. Follow the path to Le Tenne (at the end of the Petit-Châtel road), and then take the footpath towards the top of the hill. Take the path leading to Le Boude and continue to the village.

Built in the 1920s, this sawmill initially used the hydraulic power of the Dranse. It was electrified in the mid-20th century to compensate for seasonal variations in the torrent's flow. It mainly produced spruce planks for joinery and construction, in volumes of up to 2m3 per day. It rarely cut fir, which was harder and less workable for joinery. According to Maurice Crépy, the last farmer, there were as many as seven sawmills in the village, revealing the importance of woodworking in the mountains. The forest was both a constraint, capable of invading the pastures, and a resource, for building, heating and crafts. Recently restored and brought back into use by the municipal services, the sawmill can be admired from the Bords de Dranse footpath. The walk allows you to see the different parts of the building and its mechanisms, as well as the surrounding forest landscape and the Villapeyron oratory built in the 19th century to protect the crossroads.

It was built in 1630 near the path of Morgins, under the patronage of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, Saint-Bernard et Saint-Martin. During extension works in 1886, a little bell tower and a Virgin statue were added on the roof. Legend says that this chapel was used as a prison during the French Revolution.

Located in a magnificent setting on the edge of the forest with views of the mountains, it's the ideal place for a relaxing break. The area around the lake is well laid out for strolling, with a 180m-long pedestrian bridge over the water! The actual lake has been created in 1974, with since, every year, extra works to improve its look. At the beginning of July 2000, a water spring is in operation. The fitting is made with concrete stabilized at the bed of the lake, at roughly 7 meters deep. Some spots are installed around the force back pipe, allowing people to admire the equipment. Open the door of Châtel's Old Customs House to discover a different side to this cross-border region. With lots of eyewitness accounts and a fascinating exhibition packed with documents and illustrations, the Old Customs House tells the story of a picturesque world full of surprises! New temporary exhibition: "Everything to declare!... from the customs office to the smuggling museum". From its construction in the 1920s to the departure of the last gabelous in 2009 and the first visits to the interpretation centre, a lot has happened at the Châtel customs office! This unique temporary exhibition tells the anecdotes of the former gabelous who occupied these premises for almost a century! Located at 1,369 meters above sea level, the current lake is a relic of a glacial lake. Today, it has a small pond south along a wet zone of vegetation, fens of national importance and wet meadows. A romantic place where it is good to take a break and dream or just to rest your mind!

The chapel is dedicated to Saint-François-de-Sales et Sainte-Jeanne-de-Chantal. It was built in 1784, to commemorate a rockslide that fortunately made no casualties. The chapel is built on a huge stone (520 m3 / 680 cu yd).

Located in Super-Châtel in a magnificent setting at an altitude of 1650m, this 2-hectare, 6m-deep lake is accessible on foot from the village, by an easy walk of around 50 minutes, or by the Super Châtel cable car in July and August only. Located at 1900 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Mont de Grange hunting reserve with panoramic terrace, this refuge is a privileged stopover, stage of the GR5 via the Col des Mattes. In the heart of the authentic Abondance valley, join in one hour's walk a beautiful refuge, located at 1500 m altitude at the foot of Mount Grange. Built in the 19th century, the Refuge de Chesery was initially just a sturdy cowshed. Renovated in 1987, the bulding was transformed into a welcoming refuge. For over two decades, the refuge was run by the Es-Borrat family, until 2008 when they handed it over William Grenon. He, along with his vast herds of sheep, has been summering here since 1982.
