The route has been signposted for cycle tourists passing through the area. It is a nice link between Switzerland/Germany and the south of France for touring cyclists. It could me a nice one-day journey taking a return ticket with the trains (stations : Annemasse, Machilly, Bons en Chablais, Thonon les Bains). Direction of travel: north/south Landmarks and connections: Sciez (junction with Circuit du Bas-Chablais n°31); Brens (junction with Tour des Voirons n°27 and Circuit de la Vallée Verte n°28); Machilly (junction with Balcons d'Annemasse n°26) TER stations: Bons-en-Chablais, Machilly, Annemasse Description: This itinerary linking the two major towns in northern Haute Savoie is not without its merits: charming inland villages, forest passages, views of Lake Machilly. Departure is in common with Circuit du Bas Chablais n°3, down the Avenue de Corzent. Arriving in Anthy, head inland. At Sciez, there's another sharp left-hand hairpin turn, just before you reach the départementale. This is the start of a pleasant forest climb that takes you away from the coastline and into the Bas-Chablais region. The final border section slopes gently down to Ville-la-Grand and Annemasse. You may choose to arrive in Sciez not inland, but along the shores of the lake, continuing to follow the Circuit du Bas-Chablais past Anthy. In Sciez, follow and then cross the départementale 1005 with the utmost caution to get back to the connecting route. The wide road to Avoriaz is very steep, but the views are wonderful the whole way. This climb has featured in the Tour de France on seven occasions.

This climb includes a very long steep section just after the beautiful Lac de Montriond, one of the largest lakes in Haute-Savoie and the perfect place for a break during the descent.

A pleasant little circuit that nevertheless includes a sharp climb at the start. The shade provided by the Forest of Planbois can be very welcome. Direction of travel: clockwise Landmarks and connections: Armoy (junction with Tour du Mont d'Hermone n°29 and Tour du Roc d'Enfer n°37); Draillant (junction with Tour du Mont d'Hermone n°29 and Circuit de la Vallée Verte n°28); Jouvernex (junction with Circuit du Bas Chablais n°31) Description: Planbois is a hilly forest dotted with wet meadows at the foot of the Mont d'Hermone massif. Its ecological wealth is remarkable. More than 2,000 species of mushroom can be found here, as well as the rare Gladiolus marais and numerous orchids. The fauna is equally rich, with the reintroduced European beaver, the yellow-bellied toad, newts and salamanders. Before crossing it, you'll have climbed to the foot of the massif, via the RD26 to Armoy, before starting the long descent to this famous forest. You'll probably only see its conifers, oaks and aspens, but you'll be reminded of all that's hidden inside! At the end of the forest, in Jouvernex, you'll be on Circuit du Bas Chablais n°31, which takes you back to Thonon via Anthy and Corzent beach. Although this is the easier side of the pass, the gradient is still very steep. The lake after the Col de Ranfolly provides a beautiful climax to the climb.

A superb mountain plateau in the shadow of the Dent d'Oche.

The outward leg follows flat roads along the lakeshore to the charming village of Yvoire. The return leg heads inland, through the gentle hills and traditional villages to the south of the lake. Departure point / TER: Thonon-les-Bains, avenue de Corzent Length: 50 km Difficulty: blue "plus", due to its length Total ascent: 100 m Direction: counter-clockwise Landmarks and connections : Anthy-sur-Léman (junction with Thonon / Annemasse route no. 49); Sciez (junction with Annemasse / Thonon route no. 23); Jouvernex (junction with Planbois route no. 50) 72 km long, 13 km wide, 300 m deep: Lake Geneva appeared 15,000 years ago, after the retreat of the Rhône glacier. 140 professional fishermen bring out 650 tons of fish a year (whitefish, perch, pike, trout, arctic char), and some of the world's most important regattas on enclosed waters take place here every year: Cinq Jours du Léman, Bol d'Or in June, Translémanique en solitaire in September. You'll sail along the lake for most of this magnificent circuit, with a stop at Corzent beach. After climbing back up to Anthy, you'll be back on the water's edge at Redon beach. To get to the next beach at Excennevex, you'll need to cross Sciez and ride very carefully along the N5 for 1.5 km. Allow time for a visit to Yvoire and the charming little port of Nernier. You can also visit the Collongette farm museum after Chens-sur-Léman. Take care on the short, traffic-light-protected drive through Douvaine, and on the way back to Sciez, don't miss the right-hand hairpin bend just a few metres from the main road, and the sudden changes of direction over the next 3 km. 60 km of efforts supported before a long final descent of 35 km. For those who enjoy steep climbs or who are looking to join the "Club des 100 Cols". Direction of travel: counter-clockwise. Landmarks and connections: Armoy (separation with Circuit de Planbois n°50); Vailly (separation with Tour du mont d'Hermone n°29 and Circuit de la Vallée verte n°28); Mégevette; Sommand / Praz de Lys; la Côte-d'Arbroz. Description: Formerly known as the Mont Maudit, the Roc d'Enfer deserves its name both because of the storms it attracts and because of its slippery, stony escarpments where accidents are frequent. No such risk for cyclists, who need only fear fatigue, particularly on the ascent of the Col de la Ramaz. If you're feeling fit, you can take a short detour just before the Col de Jambaz. Staying on the RD26 (followed from Thonon), go back and forth to see the Lac du Vallon à la Chevrerie. This was formed by an ancient landslide that held back water from the Brevon torrent. At Mégevette, turn left off the RD26 onto the RD226 to chez Besson (Mieussy), then up to Sommand and the Col de la Ramaz via the RD308. After crossing Praz de Lys, take care on the descent: after 5 hairpin bends, turn left onto the Col de l'Encrenaz road (RD328). Similarly, after Côte d'Arbroz, take a hairpin bend to the left to pass through Essert-Romand. Return to Thonon on the RD902.

The Vallée Verte circuit and the Tour of Mont d'Hermone, together with their variants, allow cyclists to reap an impressive harvest of easy passes. Description:Mont d'Hermone is home to the Notre Dame d'Hermone chapel (1328 m) on its summit ridge in the middle of the forest. It is an active Marian pilgrimage site for all the parishes in the massif, and can be reached on foot from the Col du Feu (1120 m). The tour takes you over two other passes: Col de Terramont (1090 m) and Col des Moises (1121 m). The former is reached by a continuous climb from Thonon (RD26, then RD22 after Vailly / Sous-la-Côte). After a descent to Habère-Poche, you'll climb to the second after leaving the Col de Cou road (RD12) at the Ramble hamlet vacation camp (RD246). As you climb to the Col des Moises, you'll see the winch launch site of the Léman Mont-Blanc glider piloting school on your right. Lake Geneva is an authentic inland sea and the largest lake in Western Europe. It started out as a glacier mainly fed by the Rhone River. The lake is majestic in size and is a unique destination as the Sea in the Mountain! Lake Geneva is Western Europe’s largest lake. Its French name Léman is probably Celtic in origin, changed by Latin with frequent name changes over time: Lacus Lemanus, Lake Geneva or Lake Léman. The lake is crescent-shaped with the north bank and two sides being Swiss and the south bank being French. The border goes through the middle of the lake. The Rhone crosses through the lake from east to west. Many things have made the lake what it is today: Tectonic folding in part of the Great Lake and the action of a Rhone glacier in the Small Lake (between Yvoire and Geneva). It was formed when the Rhone glacier melted after the last ice age almost 15,000 years ago. Key figures and locations: - Length of intersection: 72.8km - Maximum width: 13.8km - Surface area: 582.4km² (348.4km² in Switzerland and 234km² in France) - Altitude: 372m - Maximum depth: 309.7m, coast plus 62.3m between Lausanne and Évian - Total water volume: 89 million m³ Microclimate... Although it is on the edge of the Alps, Lake Geneva has created a microclimate around it due to the sheer amount of water it holds. For example, in Montreux and its immediate surroundings you can see palm trees, agaves and other exotic plants. In winter, the lake uses the heat it has conserved during the summer to make the harsh mountain winter milder. In summer the lake cools its surroundings. Lake Geneva’s wildlife: Fish: Approximately 30 species of fish live together in the lake including: - True fera or féra as it is known locally, 360 tons caught in 2006 (310 tons in 2005). - Perch, which is filleted, 224 tons caught in 2006 (234 tons in 2005). - Pike, 35 tons caught in 2006 (47 tons in 2005, 29 tons in 2004 and 31 tons in 2000). In 1996 a 1.34m long pike was caught in the lake and a 20.5kg pike was caught in March 2004 in the Vaud area. - Lake trout, 11 tons caught in 2006 (17 tons in 2005, 27 tons in 2004). Some specimens can weigh up to 8 or 10 kilos. - The ever popular Arctic char, 14 tons caught in 2006 (17 tons in 2005, 9 tons in 2004, 68 tons in 2000). This fish is very sensitive to global warming as it requires very cold water in order to reproduce. - Crayfish which were released in the lake by mistake in the 80s and have now colonised the waters. This shellfish is very popular for its succulent meat and fishermen’s catch is now supplied to restaurants. - Roach, bleak, carp, burbot, tench, stickleback and many more. Birds: Many birds come to the lake as it is a migration route between the Alps and the Jura Mountains. The 150,000 birds and ducks coming from Scandinavia and even Siberia to spend their winter here include: - the Great Cormorant - the Common Merganser - the Great Crested Grebe - the Common Pochard - the Tufted Duck - and the Eurasian Coot - Along with swans and mallards. Tourism around Lake Geneva: There are lots of tourist attractions around Lake Geneva. On the Swiss coast stands Château de Chillon (Vaud) in a unique romantic setting popularised in written form by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s La Nouvelle Héloïse and Byron’s The Prisoner of Chillon. On the Haute-Savoie Chablais coast lies the fortified village of Yvoire (also know as the pearl of Lake Geneva) on a rocky fort, Excenevex Beach and Château de Ripaille. In historical Thonon-les-Bains there are towers, parks and vineyards. The Lavaux vineyards between Vevey and Lutry were classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Visitors can also explore the many sides to life around Lake Geneva by visiting its towns and cities such as Geneva itself, Lausanne, Montreux and Thonon-les-Bains.

Thonon’s 19th Century hillside railway, Constructed in 1888, ‘Le Funiculaire’ was moved by a counter-weighting system using 11 tons of water. Today, it still links the port to the town centre, but since 1990, it has been powered by electricity. The cable car Rives-Thonon (in Thonon-les-Bains), the second cable car built in France, was founded on April 2, 1888. Conceived by the engineer Auguste Alesmonières, it is the only cable car in the world where the two cars pass each other in a turn. The total length is 230 meters, 86.8 meters of turning. Before, eleven tons of water were used to run the cable car, and it was not until 1990 that the cable car started running automatically.

The fishing and lake open-air museum opened in 1987 and has found its place in the heart of the fishing village in Port de Rives. It is sheltered by three traditional huts and beats to the tune of the professional fishermen who are never far away. The Ecomusée de la Pêche et du Lac (open-air fishing and lake museum) is on Thonon-les-Bains’ fishing port in traditional fishing huts. It is strongly influenced by professional fishermen past and present and visitors can admire their work before heading off to explore the lake’s ecosystem. History and techniques: the open-air museum tracks the evolution of local fisheries science techniques, fishing with a "big spear" to catching crayfish. All Lake Geneva’s fishing equipment and tools are on display: Boats, motors, nets and keepnets. Observe the lake fish, trout, perch and even Arctic char in the four aquariums. A display of stuffed lake-dwelling birds will help you recognise the species in the natural habitat. The museum has had a large interactive game since 2007 for kids to put fish and birds in their rightful place in the ecosystem. Historical residence of St. Francis de Sales, the castles of Allinges are one of the emblematic sites of Chablais. The site offers an exceptional panorama on Lake Geneva, the Jura and the Prealps. The Château-Neuf Chapel houses Savoy’s oldest fresco (11th century). Located in the Chablais Geopark. The Hill of Allinges is one of 23 sites chosen to create the Chablais geological route, which will be inaugurated at Châteaux of Allinges on 14 September during the Heritage Days event.
