Most of this climb is in the cool shade of the trees. The gradient eases slightly after the first few kilometres but the slope remains quite steep all the way to the pass and its superb view of the Fort du Télégraphe. The Col du Télégraphe is usually climbed before the Col du Galibier. Nevertheless, it can be used as a training run before tackling the slopes of the legendary Galibier. It has been climbed 34 times by Tour de France riders since 1947. The road is in excellent condition, but is nevertheless very busy.

The Haute Maurienne is undoubtedly one of Savoie's most beautiful cycling trails, with its enchanting beauty and variety of landscapes that take you right up to the high mountains on the border with Italy. The warm-up to Modane is just a prelude to the discovery of a wild and majestic area, that of the often spectacular high mountains! Whether it's the climb up to Aussois, which takes you right up to the Parc National de la Vanoise and the mythical summit of the Dent Parrachée, the frenzied passage through Bessans or the arrival at Bonneval sur Arc, one of France's most beautiful villages, you'll have to be strong not to stop every kilometer and take out your camera. And it's a two-way street, each time offering plunging views of the adjacent valleys and inviting you to come back and discover new routes, and why not climb the Col de Mont-Cenis and say a warm hello to our Italian friends! One of the special features of this route is the opportunity to stop off in one of the many villages that follow one after the other, ensuring that you can recharge your batteries and discover an exceptional heritage.

This route is much less well known and less frequently cycled than the Col du Télégraphe, just opposite, on the other side of the valley, but it is just as beautiful and just as steep... And the road is much quieter! A magnificent panorama awaits you at the Col de Beau-Plan (view of the Aiguilles d'Arves, Croix des Têtes, Crey du Quart, Les Karellis, Valmeinier). Road conditions on this route are good, and traffic is low. There are a number of stopping points, including water in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, and refreshment points in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, Le Thyl and Saint-Martin-la-Porte. The nearest repair point is in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.

A great training before Col du Galibier Often considered as merely the first part of the Galibier, the Télégraphe is an excellent climb in its own right. The road winds upwards at gradients of between 8 and 10% but, fortunately, most of the climb is in the shade.

A legendary Col that every cyclo-climber in Europe dreams of doing. Even if you only do the second part of the climb, starting from Valloire, you will have the same breathtaking views of the Vanoise and Ecrins National Parks from the summit! Lovers of mountain cycling, the Galibier is a myth ... It links Maurienne valley and Briançon area, it's also the link between the northern and the southern Alps. The Galibier tunnel, closed since 1976, reopened in 2002. It allows an opening earlier and closing later. Now it is accessible to trucks over 15 tons. At Col du Telegraph, a first stop allows you to discover the view from the fort. This trail is limited mileage.

Discover the balcony trails that wind their way through the first heights of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne. Who would have thought that, just a few dozen metres from the hustle and bustle of the valley floor, the heights of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne would offer such spaces of calm and contemplation. This is what this itinerary offers, starting from the town center and taking you in just a few steps along the first paths once used by the inhabitants of the heights. Route: start from Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne- Mairie and join rue Beauregard. Continue along the road, passing the last buildings, then take the path to the right, Le Noiray, passing Sous Le Noiray. Turn right towards La Buffaz. Once on the road, continue for about 400 m to a cross at Crêt Lazare. Take the footpath below, heading for Saint Anne via Les Vignes. At La Chapelle, drop down to join the minor road and turn right towards Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne via a road and then a balcony path. From the center of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, you can make a round trip to the Tour Ronde.

Right from the start, you'll find yourself in a magnificent setting of high mountains, with the 17 Montvernier switchbacks to your right, and the imposing La Croix des Têtes peak, a rugged relief that makes you want to climb it. Look up and you'll see the occasional "basejumper" soaring from its summit. Keep your eyes peeled! Then on to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the valley's historic capital, and admire its 11th-century Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral and its pretty cloister, listed as a Historic Monument. Pick up the pace to pass La Chambre and take a break at the Saint-Remy-de-Maurienne leisure park. Then head due north to Aiguebelle, the gateway to the Maurienne region, after enjoying the Hurtières lake. You arrive in Chamousset, in the heart of the Combe de Savoie. Along the way, you'll be thrilled to see the start of world-famous climbs over legendary passes such as the Galibier, Télégraphe, Croix de Fer, Glandon, Madeleine and Grand Cucheron.

Would you like to stroll through the charming hamlets on the Adret slope above Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne? This loop takes you to the heart of three picturesque hamlets on the hillside, between chapels, washhouses and old bread ovens.

Between hamlets, crosses and chapels, this walk guides you through three villages to the most beautiful views of the Pas du Roc glacier lock. Departure point: hameau de la Porte - Go up into the hamlet and follow the signs for the "Chapelle de Bon Secours". 1/ From here, you can return to enjoy the view from the chapel. Alternatively, follow the path to "La Villette". 2/ In the center of the village, turn left and head for "Mollard Durand" via "La Vignette". 3/ From Mollard Durand, follow the signs for "Chapelle de Bon Secours", then return to the starting point by the same route as before.

Here's a little hike with all the makings of a big one! Without too much effort, get up high and enjoy an incredible panorama of the Maurienne valley in the company of the ibex that call this piece of rock home. Pas du Roc seems to have been placed there by a mischievous giant who wanted to block the Maurienne valley. Take the path that runs through this fold of mountain through which the river weaves its way. But what are these little concrete houses emerging here and there, half camouflaged between the rocks? They don't look like shepherd's huts... In fact, they're the remains of the Maginot Line, built here during the Second World War. The military understood the importance of this rocky overhang from which to watch over the entire valley. Under the benevolent gaze of the Fort du Télégraphe, which stands guard on the other bank, stop to contemplate the landscape that spreads out at your feet. See how Man has taken advantage of this very special geography: factories, waterworks, roads, railroads, bridges... a fine example of his genius as a builder! Winter and summer, the ski lifts are accessible with a ski pass. This can be purchased at various locations in the resort. In summer the Les Jeux Chairlift is open. Located a short distance from the pass at an altitude of 1570 m, above a sheer drop overlooking Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, the impressive Fort du Télégraphe owes its name to the Chappe signalling mast which was built on the site in the early 19th C. Just a stone's throw from the pass, at an altitude of 1,570 m, above a sheer cliff overlooking Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, the imposing Fort du Télégraphe owes its name to the presence of a Chappe telegraph signal tower built here in the early 19th century. Built between 1886 and 1890, the fort is the centerpiece of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne's military stronghold. It bears witness to the militarization of the Alps in the late 19th century. On the site of a former Marshal de Berwick camp (18th century), then a Chappe telegraph station, the fort was built by the Armée des Alpes under General Berge in 1886-1890 to defend the Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne town square and the Col du Galibier road opened in 1891. Its Séré de Rivières-style architecture is spectacularly adapted to the terrain. The fort was reused in the active defense line of the Savoy fortified sector, the Maginot Line of the Alps, in 1940.

The fort is at a 10-minute walk from the Télégraphe mountain pass. It overlooks the Maurienne Valley and offers greats views on the Arc valley. It is open only in summer and with guides. Built between 1885 and 1893, Fort du Télégraphe stands on the site of one of the Chappe aerial telegraph relays on the imperial Paris-Milan line. Its polygonal, Séré de Rivières-style architecture is adapted to the site's spectacular relief. The fort also served as a command post (Battle of the Alps, June 10-25, 1940) during the Italian offensive in the Valloire-Valmeinier sector. The fort can be reached in 10 minutes from the Col du Télégraphe parking lot via a narrow road. The fort has around 50 steps to climb during the visit. Bring a little wool. Culminating at an altitude of 1566m, the Col du Télégraphe took its name from the fort which was built there between 1885 and 1893. It dominates the Maurienne Valley, and in past centuries, it played a major defensive role, overlooking St Michel de Maurienne on one side and the military Galibier road on the other. Less well known than its neighbour, the Galibier, the Col du Télégraphe is still a considerable climb, as the cyclists who have completed it will tell you. The church, which was built in 1518, features a bell tower - topped by a slender spire - made entirely from tuff brick, something that only later became the norm higher up in the valley, in Haute-Maurienne. In the vestibule, to the right of the entrance, leading on to the nave, is a collection box which is unusual in accepting not only financial offerings but also gifts in kind, in the form of cereals which are decanted via a specially designed opening. Painted on the walls inside the church are a few divine statements. In the vestibule, you are warned : "tremblez à l'approche de mon sanctuaire" (stand in awe as you approach my sanctuary) and then, further on, on the vaulted ceiling, near the chancel, you are reminded that "Dieu voit tout, entend tout, écrit et pèse tout" (God sees all, understands all, knows and considers all). But fear not...walk through the nave and discover the work of the18th and 19th century artists who created the murals, altarpieces and paintings that adorn the building.

The Les Contamines motorhome park is located at the entrance to the village, close to a playground, petanque area, shops, restaurants and a shuttle bus stop in winter. The Albiez motorhome park is ideally located at the entrance to the village, next to the Les Contamines recreation area, and is equipped with a drinking water fountain accessible all year round. It is on the route of the free winter shuttle bus (Aire de loisirs stop). In winter, access is cleared of snow. Payment for access to electricity is made at the Mairie during opening hours (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm) by cheque or in cash. Water canisters can be emptied and filled, and access to WCs in winter is possible in the Mairie building during opening hours. From spring to autumn, when there is no longer a risk of frost, WCs are available. For emptying only, there is a grate behind the fountain. Dogs are allowed on a leash.

Leisure activities: In winter, we offer school groups and holidaymakers the chance to discover the mountain environment through educational workshops led by our activity leaders: landscape reading, fauna, flora, heritage and agriculture, or a visit to the Beaufort des Arves Cooperative. You can also take part in free or professionally supervised sporting activities, such as downhill skiing, biathlon, snowshoe trekking and dog sledding. In summer, the same educational workshops and professionally supervised sports activities are offered: archery, horseback riding, cani rando, rock climbing, via ferrata, canyoning and hiking (with or without overnight stays in bivouacs or refuges) and swimming at the Albiez lake.

Set in the heart of nature, this guest house is a fully renovated farmhouse dating from 1898. At an altitude of 1200 m, it's the ideal place to come across a rich fauna of mammals, birds and butterflies. This is an LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux - League for the Protection of Birds) gîte, where everything is done to preserve and maintain biodiversity. In winter, you're sure to spot roe deer in the woods behind the house, foxes on the path and, in summer, squirrels tightrope-walking on tree branches.
