By following Géovino in Bergheim, you'll understand what an appellation is. You'll learn about its variations, its classification system, and even be able to read the different vineyard appellations in the landscape! To start the walk, head to the totem pole in Bergheim's town garden. Cross the town garden until you reach the wine route, then head for the cycle path on rue de Weibelsgass.

By following Géovino to Rorschwihr, you'll understand what terroirs are and what makes them up. Why are they so rich, precisely here in Rorschwihr? To begin the walk, meet at the totem pole near the Rorschwihr church. Head towards rue de l'église, then right towards rue des moutons. Then join the Grand'rue on the right as far as Hohlenweg.

Mentioned for the first time in 768, Guémar, was then called Ghermari, and made up of two parts. The oldest, Ober-Gemar with its church of Saint Dennis, belonged to the priory of Lièpvre, dependent on the abbey of Saint Dennis. The larger part, Nieder-Gemar, which is the Guémar of today, included the church of Saint-Léger, dependent on the abbey of Murbach. With a port (the “ Ladhof ”) that is attested since 1298, Guémar controlled the traffic of goods (mainly wine and grain) over land and water, as they were carried on the Fecht up to the river Ill (to Strasbourg and the Rhine). In 1479, the old port became obsolete and fell into disuse, with a new dock on the Ill that was more suited to boating needs. The boatmen and fishermen of Guémar then founded the village of Illhaeusern in order to move closer to the Ill, their place of work. The strategic location of Guémar on the Fecht and the major route from Strasbourg to Colmar, called the “Landstrasse”, made it necessary for it to be fortified in the 14th century and secure the status of a city in 1369. For the Ribeaupierre family, which owned the town, Guémar was a very important place. At the end of World War II, Guémar had sustained heavy damage and 70% of the city was destroyed. Guémar, which used to be an old fishing and farming village, still has a few farmhouses in brickwork and half timbering with their outhouses (barns, cowsheds, tobacco dryers, etc.). The town is built up very densely, enclosed as it was within walls up to the start of the 20th century. It grew after the last war. With its remarkable flowers, this charming little town now offers a quiet and pleasing living environment.

Start this trail not far from Ribeauvillé where the vestiges of the three castles belonging to the Lords of Ribeaupierre look out over the town, nestling in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards. You pass a curious building made of Vosges sandstone. This is the Haut-Koenigsbourg pumping station and its neighbouring building, which houses the spring catchment. Despite its modest dimensions, this building impresses with its neo-Romanesque style. It is reminiscent of the Metz railway station, also built in a style close to the 12th century, that of the time of the Hohenstaufen, the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. On the top of the facade, there is a representation of the imperial eagle and the year 1901.

The ruin of the Oedenbourg, also known as Petit-Koenigsbourg, is not currently open to visitors, but you can see some beautiful remains behind a fence, notably a blind shield wall and several Gothic windows that mark the former dwelling (14th century). First mentioned in the 12th century, the castle was enlarged several times and finally abandoned in the 15th century (hence its name Oedenbourg - abandoned castle).

This small sandstone fountain, built in 1901, bears a Gothic German inscription meaning "May our language flow pure and clear, like the spring in the mountain".

In the Illwald forest, the chapel of Our Lady of the Oak bears witness to popular piety. According to tradition, the chapel was built in the 18th century, after a statue of the Virgin Mary was found in a boat by a couple of fishermen. Originally, it was a modest shrine; the statuette was simply placed in the trunk of an old oak tree. In 1798, the municipality decided to have the oak tree housing the statue of the Virgin cut down, which caused a great stir among the inhabitants. A niche was dug in the trunk of a nearby oak to house the statue. In 1925, the chapel was completely destroyed by fire. It was quickly rebuilt on the old model but in reinforced concrete; it was inaugurated in 1927 as the date inscribed above the door attests.
